Magic-Kyun! Renaissance is an all-media project co-produced by Sunrise, Pony Canyon, and Broccoli, centering on the fusion of magic and art in a vibrant school romance and fantasy setting.

In this universe, magic and the arts are one and the same, giving rise to a special breed of magical artists called "Artistas."

These gifted individuals harness their creative talents to generate real magical effects, dazzling audiences with their performances.

The hub for nurturing such prodigies is Private Hoshinomori Magical Arts High School (abbreviated as "Hoshigei"), which trains future Artistas in a highly competitive environment.

The school celebrates creativity, artistry, and magical prowess, where performances aren't just for show—they carry real influence on society.

Kohana Aigasaki, the protagonist, transfers into Hoshinomori Magical Arts High School, seeking to follow in her late mother's celebrated footsteps as a legendary Artista in floral arts.

Upon arrival, Kohana quickly finds herself selected as a committee member for the Star Festival (the school’s grand cultural festival).

She teams up with six distinctly talented male Artista candidates, all with their own magical specialties, tasked to lead the event to new heights.

At the festival, the most outstanding male and female students are crowned "Artista Prince & Princess"—the school’s highest honor.

Kohana's journey focuses on personal growth, teamwork, and the blossoming of potential romance with one of the brilliant Artista boys as she strives to seize her own magic.

Main Characters

Kohana Aigasaki: The endlessly positive and empathetic heroine, skilled in floral magic but initially unable to manifest her own "Arte Light," the hallmark of an Artista. Kohana shines in nurturing her friends' strengths and slowly awakens her own talents with the support of her peers.

Teika Ichijoji: Dubbed "The King" for his extraordinary singing talent. Teika is stern, proud, and intensely pressured by his prestigious family to reach ever-higher artistic heights. Despite his rough exterior, he has a soft spot for Kohana and offers her crucial guidance.

Aoi Suminomiya: A genius in calligraphy, Aoi is Teika’s childhood friend and academic rival. Initially struggling with a loss of magical perception, he recaptures his light through camaraderie and Kohana's encouragement.

Rintaro Tatewaki: The charismatic expert in sculpture, specializing in chainsaw art. After a setback that nearly caused his expulsion, he finds his calling once more through baking and supporting his friends.

Anjo Rouis: The flamboyant, playful dance prodigy known as “Angelo.” Secretly burdened by intense childhood training and failure, Rouis recovers his genuine joy of dance by mentoring Kohana for a key school event.

Monet Tsukushi: The youngest, a prodigy in sketch art, renowned for monochrome drawings so lively they appear vivid in color. Monet battles with personal creative blocks but is inspired by Kohana's infectious positivity.

Kanato Hibiki: A passionate first-year specializing in cello performance, with an imposing appearance but a big heart. He’s athletic, responsible for his younger siblings, and always quick to lend a hand to those in need.

Supporting Characters

Juri Chikamatsu: Kohana’s spirited roommate and reliable friend, excelling in stage directing and helping everyone feel welcome.

Chieri Todo: The ceramics teacher and committee supervisor, stern yet supportive, having himself participated in the festival during his youth.

Yuzuru Chitose: Kanato’s rival and friend from middle school, offering dynamic competition that fuels character growth.

Masana Ichijoji: Teika’s eldest brother and a classic overachiever, pushing Teika to maintain the family legacy.

Shinra Ichijoji: The second eldest brother, also piling expectations onto Teika.

Principal: An insightful and impartial leader, open to nurturing talent regardless of background, and recognizing Kohana’s latent potential.

Sakura Aigasaki: The legendary mother of Kohana, an iconic Artista in floral arts whose legacy continues to inspire the school.

Other family members and alumni further enrich the generational themes and school rivalry.

Artista: An individual whose artistic ability is imbued with magical power, making their performances both awe-inspiring and influential.

Arte Light: The visible magical glow produced by an Artista during the peak of their creative expression.

Star Festival (Hoshinomori Summer Festa or "StarFes"): The school’s major annual festival where Artistas compete and showcase their skills. The top male and female students are celebrated as the Artista Prince & Princess.

Artista Prince & Princess: Prestigious titles awarded at the festival to the top-performing boy and girl, symbolizing recognition and honor in the magical arts community.

Private Hoshinomori Magical Arts High School ("Hoshigei"): The high school where all talented Artistas are nurtured.

The PlayStation Vita game received a score of 28/40 in Famitsu’s cross-review, reflecting solid approval for its story and attractive anime cutscenes.

Critics lauded the project’s integration of magical artistry and otome romance, praising the uplifting story and music, while referencing the well-executed blend of visual, musical, and narrative elements.

However, some reviews noted that major magical moments are described through text rather than animation in the game, which may rely on player imagination, though the anime compensates by vividly bringing these moments to life.

The pacing of romantic developments was sometimes described as swift, appealing to players who enjoy classic, heart-throbbing routes with a traditional flair.

The series has a niche but loyal fanbase, with particular appeal among admirers of school romance and music-centric magic fantasy settings.

Opening Theme: "Magic-Kyun! No.1☆" by the in-world idol unit ArtiSTARs, delivering energetic pop with a magical twist.

Ending Theme: "Please Kiss My Heart" by ArtiSTARs, a heartfelt song capturing the romantic and dreamy atmosphere.

Insert songs feature solos by individual male leads, each contributing character-driven musical moments that showcase vocal talent and personality.

Special pieces like "Art Session!!!!!!!," "Walk in the Lonely Night," and "Step of Happiness!" highlight the variety and emotional depth of the Artista performances.

Video Game: Released for PlayStation Vita in September 2016. An adventure otome game developed by HuneX and published by Broccoli, emphasizing interactive romance, magical artistry, and multiple character routes.

Anime: Aired from October to December 2016 with 13 episodes. Produced by Sunrise, featuring lush animation, expressive performances, and musical numbers that augment the storytelling.

Manga: Two manga adaptations—one serialized in Sylph magazine, featuring main storylines, and a spin-off in Poni Maga magazine, both compiled into single volumes, expanding the narrative and comedic aspects.

Novel: A light novel recounts additional heartwarming side stories, focusing on the shared school dormitory life, published by Pony Canyon.

Audio CDs: Extensive soundtrack and character song albums, including opening and ending singles, solo character CDs, and a drama CD immersing fans further in the world of Artistas.

Sunrise partnered with Pony Canyon and Broccoli to craft a richly designed multimedia project that tapped into the growing popularity of otome games blended with magic and mega-talented musical boys.

The project’s origin lies in combining character-driven romantic adventure with vibrant musical performances, aiming to wow both anime and gaming audiences.

Well-known creators handled character designs, music, and series composition, ensuring a high level of quality across media.

Series composition was led by Tomoko Konparu, known for her work in romance and youth drama.

Original character designs by Kairi Yura, famous for lush and expressive style, were adapted for animation by Kumi Ishii.

Music composed by Go Sakabe contributed to a whimsical, uplifting audio landscape.

Direction by Mitsue Yamazaki ensured seamless integration of visual art, music, and romantic narrative, reinforcing the unique, magical atmosphere.

An April Fools’ Day event in 2016 featured real-life floral artist Shogo Kariyazaki as the “Seventh Artista,” underscoring the franchise’s playful spirit.

Unique merchandise included acrylic voice keychains, where scanning barcodes with a smartphone would unlock exclusive voice clips, deepening the fan experience.

The anime was widely broadcast on Japanese networks including TOKYO MX, KBS Kyoto, Sun TV, TV Aichi, AT-X, and BS11, and released in 7 Blu-ray/DVD volumes packed with bonus content.

Despite its short run, Magic-Kyun! Renaissance made waves for its imaginative setting, strong themes of self-discovery, and the effervescent magic of art and friendship.
