Character Setting

Edit

Kyuruga is a male Munchkin cat who stands out for his long legs, even though Munchkins are usually known for having short ones. His body is covered in mackerel tabby fur, and his mouth area looks like a cute cat bottom, making him even more charming. Kyuruga got his name because the pattern on his forehead looks like a QR code, even if it can’t actually be scanned. He is crazy about chicken meat and will always beg for it, especially when Pi-chan is preparing chicken breast or after Fuuta eats fried chicken. Kyuruga is based on the author’s real pet cat. In the anime version, every sound Kyuruga makes, from meows to purring and even his breathing, is performed by his voice actor Takagaki.

Kyuruga is a male Munchkin cat with unusually long legs.

He has mackerel tabby fur and a unique mouth area that looks like a little bottom.

His most noticeable feature is the pattern on his forehead, which looks a lot like a QR code.

Kyuruga loves chicken more than anything.

He usually does not try to grab human food, but he cannot resist chicken dishes.

He tends to gain weight, which sometimes makes it hard for him to jump onto the sofa.

Even so, he still surprises everyone with his cat-like agility from time to time.

When he is unhappy, he makes a special sound that means “Nooo...” to protest.

The real Kyuruga, the author’s beloved pet, is the model for this character.

Kyuruga’s name comes from the QR code-like pattern on his forehead, which a phone once tried to recognize as a QR image, giving him his unique name.

In the early days of the original blog, the real Kyuruga’s photo was sometimes posted as a bonus.

Kyuruga is especially attached to Fuuta.

He welcomes Fuuta home with excitement, sometimes sleeps on the same pillow, and likes to rest on Fuuta's stomach on the sofa.

Kyuruga used to not get along well with Pi-chan, his original owner, to the point where the author said, "Kyuruga dislikes my sister."

But over time, he got used to Pi-chan, now asking for treats like chicken or roasted sweet potato, and even wanting to play with her using her hands when a toy is not enough.

Although chubby and sometimes clumsy, Kyuruga is still a cat at heart and can do athletic moves that surprise Fuuta.

“Nooo...” (Kyuruga’s special way of protesting when he is unhappy)

A Cat’s Irresistible Love for Chicken

Kyuruga is known for his strong love for chicken.

Whenever Pi-chan prepares chicken breast, he always begs for some.

After Fuuta eats fried chicken, Kyuruga insists on sniffing him to enjoy the scent.

Expressive Ways of Meowing

Kyuruga’s cries are very unique and not the usual “meow.”

He makes sounds like “waoooon,” “bwaaaanwan,” “marurururu,” and “fyaru.”

When purring, the sound is written as “brorororo” or “golurun… golurun” instead of just “purr.”

In the anime, all of Kyuruga’s sounds, breathing, and purring are performed by Takagaki, not sound effects.

Many fans say their own cats react when watching the anime because of the realistic sounds.

The author explained that Takagaki was picked as Kyuruga’s voice because he sounded the most like the real cat.

Growing Friendship with Pi-chan

At first, Kyuruga avoided Pi-chan, acting cold and distant.

But with time, he became much closer to her.

Now, he begs her for treats and wants to play using her hands.

  • Kyuruga appeared in a special collaboration when "GAMERA-Rebirth-" was released worldwide on Netflix in September 2023.
  • The author once posted a drawing of "Gojinya," a cat inspired by Godzilla, which came before the Gamera collaboration.
  • Kyuruga teamed up with "Neko Neko Shokupan" bread as a limited edition flavor.
  • In the anime, Kyuruga spins quickly, inspired by “jet rotation,” which fans noticed and commented on.
  • The voice actor Takagaki Ayahi, who plays Kyuruga, also appears in “Gamera Daikaiju Zesshou,” and some scenes in the anime pay tribute to “Senki Zessho Symphogear XD.”
