Character Setting

Edit

Rokurouta is a death-row convict from the manga and anime series Hell's Paradise: Jigokuraku, feared as a gigantic childlike monster whose overwhelming strength turns him into a living calamity despite his innocent mind.

Rokurouta is known by the ominous epithet “Great Giant of Bizen”, a reference to his immense size and destructive power.

He is one of the condemned criminals sent to the mysterious island, accompanied by his executioner, Eizen of the Yamada Asaemon.

Physically, Rokurouta stands over 3 meters tall with a body that completely dwarfs most other characters.

His strength is so extreme that even Gabimaru, an elite ninja, is heavily damaged by his blows.

Despite this terrifying exterior, he is mentally comparable to a very young child.

His story is a tragic one: a boy whose body and power grew uncontrollably because of his strong Tao, while his mind stayed that of a small child.

Name: Rokurouta

Gender: Male

Age: 8 years old

Birthday: October 6

Height: 321 cm

Affiliation: Death-row convict in Hell's Paradise: Jigokuraku

Nickname / Epithet: “Great Giant of Bizen”

Executioner: Eizen (Yamada Asaemon)

Energy (Tao) Attribute: Wood

Voice Actors: Hyuga Tadokoro (main), Kyoko Chikiri (childhood scenes)

Rokurouta’s mental age is around three to four years old, which defines almost everything about how he behaves.

He is driven by very simple desires: he wants to eat, play, and be accepted.

He does not understand his own strength or the consequences of his actions.

When he gets hungry, he becomes distressed, cries, and rampages without any awareness of the damage he causes.

Because of this, Rokurouta is not malicious by nature.

He is more like an oversized toddler lost in a world that fears and hates him, reacting with confusion rather than intent to kill.

His childishness is seen in the way he pursues what he wants in a straightforward, almost naive manner.

At the same time, this innocence makes his violence even more heartbreaking, since he never truly meant to hurt the people around him.

Gigantic Physique

Rokurouta’s body is abnormally large, exceeding 3 meters in height and built with terrifying mass and muscle.

This enormity alone makes him a threat, allowing him to crush or swat people aside with minimal effort.

His durability is compared to that of the stone-hidden ninja, placing him on par with elite assassins like Gabimaru in terms of toughness.

He can withstand powerful attacks that would kill ordinary humans instantly.

Immense Physical Strength

Rokurouta possesses monstrous raw power.

With a single hand, he can kill a person, and his punches are described as capable of killing in moments.

In battle, he instantly overwhelms skilled fighters such as Eizen and Genji.

Even Gabimaru, one of the strongest characters, suffers severe damage when facing Rokurouta head-on.

His blows are not refined techniques but pure, unrestrained force amplified by his enormous frame.

This makes him unpredictable and extremely dangerous in close combat.

Innate Tao (Wood Attribute)

Rokurouta’s terrifying strength and size are ultimately rooted in his Tao, the life energy of the series’ world.

His attribute is Wood, which is typically associated with growth and vitality.

From birth, his Tao was exceptionally strong, causing his body to grow at an abnormal rate while his mind stayed that of a child.

This imbalance turned him into a giant without the emotional or intellectual capacity to handle his power.

In chapter 39, Sagiri Yamada Asaemon later speculates that Rokurouta was unconsciously using Tao.

This explains his unnatural power and resilience despite having no formal training or understanding of Tao.

Later, the series editor Sakakibara confirmed that his gigantic body itself was a manifestation of Tao, not just natural growth.

In other words, his size and power are literally his overflowing life energy made physical.

Tragic Past

Rokurouta was born in a normal village, but his abnormal growth and power quickly made him a danger to those around him.

He never intended to harm anyone; he simply wanted food, comfort, and play like any other child.

However, whenever he became too hungry or distressed, his uncontrolled rampages would begin.

In these episodes he would cry, lash out, and destroy everything in his path without understanding what he was doing.

Over time, this led to the accidental deaths of his parents and other villagers.

The village could not contain or understand him, and eventually the place was effectively destroyed because of his outbursts.

Rokurouta’s tragedy is that he loved and needed the very people he killed.

He never truly grasped that his own hands and strength were the cause of their disappearance.

On the Island

As a death-row convict, Rokurouta is paired with Eizen of the Yamada Asaemon as his executioner and overseer.

Eizen is tasked with watching him, keeping him under control, and ensuring he follows the mission’s rules.

However, Rokurouta’s Tao-fueled power and instability eventually lead to disaster.

He loses control and goes on a rampage, unintentionally killing even Eizen, who was supposed to monitor him.

Once unleashed, Rokurouta becomes a threat rivaling or even surpassing the monsters of the island.

His presence forces Gabimaru and the others to treat him as a catastrophe rather than just another convict.

Battle Against Gabimaru and Sagiri

Rokurouta confronts Gabimaru and Sagiri Yamada Asaemon, leading to one of the early major battles in the series.

During this fight, his raw power causes serious trouble for them, showing just how dangerous an uncontrolled Tao user can be.

Gabimaru, despite his superior technique and experience, struggles against Rokurouta’s size and durability.

It takes coordinated effort, resilience, and tactical awareness to survive the encounter.

Ultimately, it is Sagiri’s decisive sword strike—delivered after she overcomes her own hesitation—that ends Rokurouta’s life.

She beheads him in a single, clean cut, granting him a peaceful end rather than continued suffering.

His death is depicted not as a triumph over a villain, but as a mercy killing of a suffering child trapped in a monstrous body.

The scene emphasizes both Sagiri’s growth and the emotional weight of judging and executing someone whose sins were never truly intentional.

Rokurouta embodies the theme of power without understanding.

His story asks what happens when someone is born with overwhelming strength but no guidance, acceptance, or emotional maturity.

He is feared as a monster, yet at his core he is a lonely child desperate for simple comforts.

His hunger-driven rampages are more like tantrums magnified by godlike physical power.

This contrast between appearance and inner self makes him one of the most tragic figures in Hell's Paradise: Jigokuraku.

Rather than being evil, he is a victim of circumstance, biology, and the world’s inability to handle someone like him.

Sagiri’s speculation about his unconscious Tao use adds another layer.

It suggests that even without training, some people are so saturated with Tao that their very existence becomes dangerous to others.

Rokurouta is also an early example in the story of how Tao can warp the body and fate of a person.

His size, strength, and eventual death all stem from the same source: a power he never asked for and never understood.

According to the author, Rokurouta’s main design inspiration was Leatherface from *The Texas Chain Saw Massacre*.

The idea was to create a giant, intimidating figure with a strong horror presence and a sense of unstoppable brutality.

The creator has stated that Rokurouta’s character design came together very quickly and very cleanly.

They felt that once the idea solidified, there was no need to change it, as it already felt “complete” and perfectly suited to the role.

The scenes depicting Rokurouta as a child were particularly painful for the author to draw.

They found it emotionally difficult because of how sad and unfair his life is, emphasizing that he is more tragic than villainous.

His dual casting with two voice actors reflects his split nature.

Hyuga Tadokoro brings weight to his monstrous, rampaging form, while Kyoko Chikiri voices his younger, more clearly childlike moments.
