Character Setting

Edit

A near-constant presence in the daily life of the Shibata family, Nishi is the master of a neighborhood café, quietly watching over Hajime Shibata and his daughter Tsugumi.

He appears friendly and supportive, but beneath his exterior lies a deeply personal grudge connected to the tragic fate of his own sister’s family.

Nishi runs the local café "Aruru Hall", serving as a fixture in the community.

His given name is unclear, though Hajime Shibata refers to him as "Tetsu," though the full spelling remains unknown.

In the original anime, Nishi played only a minor background role.

The live-action drama adaptation, however, elevates him to a prominent, pivotal character.

Nishi displays ongoing concern for the Shibata family, acting as a confidant and sometimes mentor.

Despite his outward warmth, he harbors a dark motive: an unresolved grudge stemming from a news article written by Hajime Shibata that led to his sister’s entire family dying in a murder-suicide.

To avenge this tragedy, Nishi turns to Hell Girl, putting in a request targeting Ayumi Shibata for damnation.

Five years pass, but grief and blame fester; Nishi’s thirst for vengeance intensifies, and he shifts his focus to young Tsugumi Shibata, even going so far as to kidnap her.

As the situation escalates, Hajime discovers Tsugumi’s location by accessing Hell Correspondence.

Ai Enma, the Hell Girl, intervenes, revealing the painful truth to Nishi about the consequences of his actions.

Overwhelmed by guilt, Nishi realizes the error of his vengeance-driven path.

In a moment of remorse, he chooses to pull the string on the straw doll himself, sealing his own fate and condemning himself to Hell.

Nishi presents himself as dependable, thoughtful, and protective toward those around him.

Beneath the surface, however, he is haunted by overwhelming sorrow and bitterness.

His descent into obsession over revenge and his willingness to cross moral lines show his complex nature.

Despite his final, tragic choice, Nishi’s journey reflects the devastating power of unresolved trauma and the possibility for self-reflection, even at the end.
