Character Setting

Edit

Minami Nanba is a third-year student at Osaka Academy and the highly popular head of Dormitory Two in *Hana-Kimi*, known as the school’s top playboy and a dependable leader with strong charisma.

Minami Nanba is attractive, openly woman-crazy, and often dismissed as a flashy flirt.

At the same time, he is friendly, looks after juniors, and keeps Dormitory Two tightly united through decisive leadership.

He is one of the three dorm leaders who form the “Flower Cherry Council,” effectively acting as a student-council-president figure.

He constantly competes with the heads of Dormitory One and Dormitory Three at school events, though they cooperate when it truly matters.

His name comes from “Minami,” the common nickname for the Namba area around Namba Station in Chuo Ward, Osaka.

His image flower is the dendrobium orchid.

School year: Third year.

Dorm affiliation: Dormitory Two (Dorm Head).

Image flower: Dendrobium orchid.

Minami is observant, quick to read the room, and confident in taking charge.

He is overwhelmingly supported by his dormmates because he combines approachability with firm leadership.

Although he is famous for chasing women, he also has a clear protective streak toward students.

A painful romance in his past is implied to be the reason he became such a hardened flirt.

Family

Minami is the son of Iō.

He is the nephew of the school nurse, Hokuto Umeda.

His aunt Rio calls him “Minami-chan.”

His mother remarks that it is unusual for him to be without a girlfriend.

Juniors and friends

He treats Mizuki Ashiya kindly from the moment she enters Dormitory Two, including giving her a dorm tour when they first meet.

Senri Nakao aggressively pursues him romantically, but Minami avoids him and brushes him off lightly.

Minami still receives serious confessions, yet he ultimately rejects them.

He once brought the friendless Senri into the group, which partly explains why he tolerates Senri’s persistence despite being annoyed by it.

In the 2007 Japanese drama, Minami is nicknamed a “wild-type handsome guy.”

After finding a missing school uniform during a treasure-hunt game in episode 6, he becomes part of the Flower Cherry Council.

He consistently places in the top three in event popularity rankings.

His womanizing reputation is so extreme that he is mocked as “a walking reproductive organ,” and he is teased that being near him could get someone pregnant.

He is also ridiculed with wordplay that turns his surname into “pick-up artist.”

At the start of the broadcast, he is said to be dating fifteen women at once.

Due to one of Senri’s schemes, he ends up breaking up with all of them and becomes single.

By episode 7, it is said he has gone 73 days without a girlfriend, which is portrayed as rare for him.

Even so, his flirting skills are real.

When Shūichi Nakatsu is about to lose a pick-up contest against Makoto Kagurazaka in episode 5, Minami turns the tables by arriving with more than ten women and securing the win.

Most women do not seem to hold his attention after a breakup.

One exception is Kanako, a tutor from his middle-school years who was five years older than him and whom he once tried to live with after graduation.

Minami calls her the only woman he ever truly loved.

When they reunite in episode 5, he tries to get back together, but she refuses because she is close to marriage.

He briefly considers stealing her away.

After Senri asks whether her happiness or his matters more, Minami changes his mind, blesses her marriage, and says he is glad he went to high school.

Despite his reputation, he shows responsibility toward the student body.

When a rumor spreads that the school may close, he asks his mother to employ any students who might be forced out.

When Kita-hama’s behavior becomes abusive, Minami negotiates alongside the other dorm heads as the Flower Cherry Council to overturn Nakatsu’s suspension.

According to Iō, Minami genuinely loves Osaka Academy “in his own way.”

He fights constantly with the other dorm leaders, yet they unite when necessary, and the Flower Cherry Council is ultimately formed.

Minami is the last major student character to meet Mizuki, and he is the one who guides her around the dorm.

In the special episode, Minami says Mizuki made him believe that even if your environment changes, you can still shape your life through your own choices.

During a dance party, a mass illness forces him to pair up with a cross-dressed Senri, and after an accidental collision, they end up kissing.

In the final episode, he witnesses “a girl” changing clothes and later spots Mizuki while staking out the scene.

He summons her to the student council room, hears the truth and her circumstances, and decides that leaving things as they are would only hurt her if exposed.

As a Flower Cherry Council duty to protect students, he proposes they help her choose a new path by the time they graduate in March.

When Mizuki leaves, he tells her Osaka Academy is her alma mater no matter what anyone says, and that he will come running anywhere if she needs help.

Six months later, it is revealed he will pay out of pocket to join the school trip with the other dorm heads.

In the summer special, he repeatedly hits on Mizuki’s friend Julia Maxwell but is coolly dismissed, which he claims is the first time he was disliked at first sight.

He has a chlorine allergy and does not participate in a territory-capture battle.

After Dormitory Two wins and Senri earns the top individual prize, Senri claims a kiss from Minami as the reward.

In an epilogue set from February 2008 onward, Minami reports that he passed university entrance by leveraging his looks as a special talent.

On graduation day, he thanks the returning Mizuki and cheers the entire student body to enjoy the present moment and shine as brightly as they can.

In the 2011 Japanese drama, he is still a flirt, but the portrayal downplays constant pick-up scenes due to the school being on the verge of closure.

Even so, he flirts with Mizuki at their first meeting despite thinking she is male, gifts flowers while courting strangers, and openly ogles women in swimsuits.

His strongest impression in this version is as a reliable organizer and morale booster for the dorm.

In episode 3, he reunites with Kanako, demands to know why she disappeared from his life, and later buys a bouquet to celebrate her marriage after coming to terms with it during the athletic festival.

He often supports plans proposed by Mizuki and Nakatsu.

When they propose a joint sports tournament, he helps make it happen and accepts responsibility when things go wrong.

When adult interference is exposed during the athletic festival at the school festival, he rallies the dorm back to its feet.

When Mizuki feels guilty and depressed, he comforts her by talking about what Osaka Academy means.

He is frequently pushed around by adults, yet repeatedly takes the lead in helping everyone recover.

Senri continues to pursue him romantically, and Minami keeps brushing him off.

However, when Minami risks his position to ask the headmaster to cancel an early demolition, he accepts a protective charm Senri made for him.

Although he clashes with the other dorm heads, when Izumi Sano decides to jump again, Minami concludes they must act too and helps form the Flower Cherry Council to fight the demolition plan.

In episode 10, while investigating the rumored “girl,” he sees Mizuki and confronts her in the room she shares with Sano.

After hearing the truth, he allows her to remain because she is an important friend, and he agrees when she says she wants to tell everyone herself.

When the rumor spreads and the headmaster’s side tries to expel her, Minami refuses to let things end there after Mizuki blocks the attempt.

At the school’s closure ceremony, he and the others dance to convey their feelings to Mizuki.

When Mizuki leaves the school, Minami tells her she taught him something important and wishes her well.
