Mio has a bob-cut hairstyle in light blue with a gradient of purple at the tips.

Part of her hair is braided and styled into a half-up look, giving her a clean but stylish silhouette.

She wears a star-shaped hairpin that holds her bangs to the side, reinforcing her celestial, cool image.

Her eyes are purple, complementing her blue image color and gemstone-themed aura.

From her second year in high school (the Kagayaki no Jewel series), her front hair accessory changes from two simple stars to a design featuring a star with feather-like decorations.

The overall look emphasizes both her mature coolness and her status as a gemstone-themed idol.

Mio is usually calm, cool, and very much her own person.

She often goes at her own pace and can seem distant or hard to approach to those who do not know her.

She has extremely sharp fashion sense and a perfectionist mindset.

As a model, she refuses to compromise even on small details, relying on her intuition to choose combinations of outfits, accessories, and poses.

Despite her cool appearance, she is surprisingly passionate and intense about the things she loves, such as idols she admires, design ideas, and cute mascots.

She can become very talkative once a topic matches her interests.

Mio is not good at group activities and was somewhat isolated within the idol department.

She has difficulty casually building human relationships, and before meeting Aine Yuki, she had no one she considered a “true friend.”

She dislikes insects and is visibly uncomfortable around them.

However, if she thinks something might be a good design motif, she will still study and observe it, even while hiding behind Aine in fear.

Her sense of responsibility is strong, and she takes her work as a model, designer, and idol seriously.

She also has a slightly romantic view of fate and intuition, often trusting sudden “sparks” of inspiration when choosing partners or designs.

Mio has been active as a popular idol since elementary school.

By the time of Aikatsu Friends!, she is already a top-class idol known throughout the industry.

Her parents are both designers and are very busy with their careers.

Her father, Osamu, works overseas, and her mother, Reiko, is often away from home on work trips.

Because of their schedules, Mio effectively lives alone in a high-end high-rise apartment.

Her home environment is luxurious, but she spends a lot of time by herself.

Her room is filled with books and merchandise related to the legendary idol duo Love Me Tear.

She is an intense idol fan and can talk endlessly about them once she starts.

She is not just a fan: she clearly considers Love Me Tear as rivals she must surpass.

This duality—fan and challenger—drives a lot of her ambition and design inspiration.

The first time she stayed overnight at someone else’s house was when she slept over at Aine Yuki’s home.

Being in an unfamiliar environment, she found it hard to fall asleep, highlighting how accustomed she is to being alone.

Mio attends the Idol Department of Star Harmony Academy.

There, she is recognized as a top idol who has already built a strong career before the series begins.

She serves as an exclusive model for the fashion magazine Aikatsu! Style Times.

Her modeling work showcases her style, poses, and charisma, attracting attention from fans and creators alike.

Within the idol department, she was considered to have an “unapproachable atmosphere.”

Many students admired her from afar but did not know how to interact with her, reinforcing her isolation.

Despite this distance, Mio is extremely serious and professional at work.

She studies combinations thoroughly, checks details, and uses her strong intuition to elevate both her and her partners’ performance.

From the second year of Aikatsu Friends! (Kagayaki no Jewel) onward, Mio advances to the high school division of Star Harmony Academy.

She continues to balance her roles as idol, model, and designer while exploring even more ambitious stages.

Mio is the designer and muse of her own fashion brand, Material Color.

The brand emphasizes sophisticated color combinations, crystal-like motifs, and cool, modern silhouettes.

Her design process is deeply tied to her everyday life.

She constantly uses her Aikatsu Mobile to take photos of anything that might become a design hint—scenery, small objects, movements, and even fleeting moments.

She snaps pictures obsessively, often without caring if the photos are slightly blurred or taken in a rush.

As long as her eye can recognize the reference, it becomes a potential seed for a new design.

Mio’s strong visual sense and intuition define Material Color.

Her outfits often feature gemstone-like aesthetics and structures that highlight light, transparency, and sharp edges.

In Aikatsu on Parade!, she also often gives design advice to Raki Himeishi, who admires her as both designer and senior idol.

Mio carefully supports Raki’s growth, sharing insights about inspiration, color, and the importance of one’s own “material” or core.

Mio is very fond of fortune-telling and draws inspiration from it.

When forming a unit, she researched many kinds of fortune-telling from various times and places.

Even so, in the end, she relies on sudden intuition—what she calls a “spark” or “electric feeling.”

This balance between analysis and instinct is a major part of her character.

When she met Aine Yuki, she felt an immediate, powerful intuition that Aine was the right partner.

That same instinct drove her to invite Aine to stand on stage with her even before Aine became an official idol student.

Mio’s sense of fate is also seen in how she approaches her own stages and outfits.

She treats key turning points in her career as moments when inspiration “lands” on her like a gemstone.

In the second season, during episode 52, she challenges “Space Aikatsu,” an idol activity in space once pursued by Hibiki Tensho.

As she takes on this challenge, a “rough gemstone” of potential comes to her and transforms into a sapphire Jeweling Dress on stage, symbolizing her growth and crystallized talent.

The central turning point in Mio’s life is her meeting with Aine Yuki.

At the time, Mio needed a partner because she had entered a stage that required a two-person unit and had little time to spare.

During a work break, she ordered a special tomato basil cheese sandwich from Penguin Café.

Aine, who worked part-time delivering sandwiches, brought it to Mio on set.

The moment Mio saw Aine, she felt a clear, electric intuition that Aine was the one.

She spontaneously asked Aine to join her on stage as her partner, even though it would be Aine’s first-time idol performance.

Despite being a complete beginner, Aine successfully completed the performance alongside Mio.

Impressed by Aine’s natural brightness and their compatible chemistry, Mio then proposed that they form a long-term unit.

In episode 11, they officially form the friends unit Pure Palette.

From that point on, Mio’s world begins to expand as she gains not only a partner but also more friends through Aine’s outgoing nature.

However, Mio struggles internally with the differences in how they view each other.

For Mio, Aine is her one and only irreplaceable partner, but she realizes that to Aine, Mio is one friend among many.

This realization causes Mio to feel anxious and insecure.

Until she receives a clear “yes” from Aine about their partnership and bond, she worries that their feelings might not be aligned.

Over time, they overcome these emotional hurdles and deepen their mutual understanding.

Pure Palette becomes one of the main symbolic units of Aikatsu Friends!, representing the theme of “best friends as partners.”

Through Aine, Mio gradually becomes closer to other students in the idol department.

Her world, once limited to work and solitary effort, grows more colorful with friendships and shared experiences.

She first calls people she respects with polite honorifics and a somewhat formal tone.

As she grows closer to them, her speech becomes more casual and affectionate.

Examples of how Mio addresses others include:

Aine Yuki as “Aine”

Maika Chono as “Maika”

Ema Hinata first as “Hinata-senpai,” later as “Ema”

Karen Kamishiro as “Karen”

Mirai Asuka as “Mirai”

Sakuya Shirayuri as “Sakuya” (after initially using a more formal style)

Kaguya Shirayuri as “Kaguya” (after initially more formal)

Hibiki Tensho as “Hibiki”

Alicia Charlotte as “Alicia”

Wakaba Harukaze as “Wakaba”

She also uses casual first-name forms for many main idols from other Aikatsu series, such as Ichigo, Akari, Yume, Mahiru, Ako, Koharu, Kirara, Aria, Hime, Mizuki, and others when she meets them in crossover settings like Aikatsu on Parade!.

This reflects a mix of admiration and a sense of camaraderie among top idols.

Mio is especially attached to Penne, the mascot penguin of Penguin Café.

Whenever she sees Penne, she blushes and quietly whispers “Pen-sama,” treating the penguin like a noble being she deeply adores.

Mio is an intense fan of the legendary idol duo Love Me Tear.

Her room is packed with their books and goods, showing just how devoted she is.

When she starts talking about them, she can hardly stop, revealing an enthusiastic “idol otaku” side that contrasts with her cool image.

She analyzes them not only as a fan but as a rival, looking for ways to surpass them artistically and professionally.

This idol-otaku aspect also influences her design and stage direction.

She absorbs techniques, moods, and concepts from her favorite idols and transforms them into her own style.

In the second season of Aikatsu Friends!, Mio challenges “Space Aikatsu,” also called “Space Katsu,” an idol activity performed in space.

This path had previously been taken on by Hibiki Tensho, making it a mark of high ambition.

As she steps into this extraordinary stage, a raw gemstone of potential “flies” to her.

On stage, that gemstone transforms into her sapphire Jeweling Dress.

The sapphire Jeweling Dress symbolizes Mio’s refined coolness, clarity, and determination.

It marks a key evolution in her idol career and solidifies her standing as a Jeweling Idol.

Mio continues to play a significant role in Aikatsu on Parade!.

She frequently acts alongside Aine Yuki and the new protagonist Raki Himeishi.

With Raki aspiring to be a designer, Mio naturally becomes one of her biggest inspirations and advisors.

She offers Raki guidance about design ideas, brand identity, and the importance of intuition and observation.

Mio also collaborates and interacts with idols from previous Aikatsu series.

For example, she meets Laura Sakuraba, another cool-type idol known for unexpected versatility, and they share the stage in episode 19 of Aikatsu on Parade!.

Her presence in Aikatsu on Parade! underscores her status as one of the franchise’s central, enduring protagonists.

She bridges different generations of idols through both fashion and performance.

Within the real-world tie-in context of the franchise, Mio holds a strong “fashion authority” position.

Because of her role in the story as a fashion-focused idol and designer, she was chosen as an official advisor character for the Aikatsu! Style shops.

Even after the series shifted into Aikatsu on Parade!, she continued as an official shop advisor.

She shared this role with Yozora Kasumi and Mahiru Kasumi, previous advisor idols from Aikatsu Stars!.

This meta-level role reinforces her image as a fashion expert.

For fans, she functions as a bridge between the anime world and real-life merchandise and styling.

Mio is the first cool-type main protagonist in the history of the Aikatsu franchise.

Before her, all main protagonists had been of the cute type, such as Aine Yuki and earlier main characters.

Unlike previous main heroines, Mio is not a rookie when her story begins.

She debuted as an idol in her first year of middle school, so by the start of Aikatsu Friends! she is already in her second year as a professional idol.

Her experience and professionalism set her apart from earlier leads who typically start from zero.

This creates a different dramatic arc: instead of learning the basics, she must overcome emotional barriers, loneliness, and the pressure of being a top idol.

Her dynamic with Aine, who is bright, flexible, and initially inexperienced, highlights this contrast.

Together, they form a duo where Mio’s expertise and Aine’s spontaneity balance each other.

Mio is voiced by Ibuki Kido.

Kido had previously voiced multiple characters in earlier Aikatsu series, including Asami Himuro, Kurumi Mori, Hibari Katsumata, and several minor roles.

Kido also voiced a sweets-type Dressia called Sweet Whole Cake in Aikatsu Planet!.

Her casting as Mio made her one of the few main Aikatsu protagonists voiced by an actor in their twenties at the time, following Shino Shimoji (voice of Akari Oozora).

There is a small behind-the-scenes anecdote about Mio’s father, Osamu.

He is voiced by Tomokazu Sugita, and this casting came about because Ibuki Kido personally requested Sugita for the role.

Sugita had once been requested by Azusa Tadokoro (voice of Aoi Kiriya) to play a father role in the original Aikatsu anime.

However, at that time, director Ryuichi Kimura had not yet invited Sugita to the series, so the idea did not happen until Aikatsu Friends!.

Mio shares her name, though spelled differently, with another character in a different Bandai-related project named Mio Minato (written in another script).

There is also a real-world idol named Mio Minato from the group #BababaBambi whose stage name sounds exactly the same as Mio Minato.

Since the anime character came first and the real-world surname is likely invented, it is possible that the stage name may have been inspired by the character.

This has become a point of interest among some fans.

In terms of franchise placement, Mio and Aine sit between Yume Nijino and Raki Himeishi in the lineup of Aikatsu series protagonists.

Together with Aine, Mio represents the “friends” era of the franchise, where partnership and mutual inspiration are central themes.
