Character Setting

Edit

Haira is a 726-year-old elf who serves as the sacred body at Urayumi Shrine in Kanazawa. She is also known as Uramimi Hime-no-Mikoto. Haira is the oldest elf in the series Otaku Elf, having been summoned by Toshiie Maeda. She stands out due to her elegant way of speaking, her habit of carrying a Japanese umbrella, and her love for gambling. Although she often acts as a mature role model compared to Elda and Yord, she has a serious weakness for betting and can make reckless choices. Despite her flaws, she is well-loved by her shrine’s community. Haira likes gardening and is very knowledgeable about plants, often growing vegetables and wild plants behind the main shrine building. Her troublesome gambling and quirky adventures have been causing trouble for generations of the Koimari family and others around her.

Haira always carries a traditional Japanese umbrella and has narrow, thread-like eyes.

She wears old-fashioned clothing that matches her refined presence.

As an elf, her long ears are one of her most striking features.

Her appearance radiates elegance, fitting for someone worshipped as a deity.

Though Haira acts mature and polite, her biggest flaw is a wild love for gambling.

She is friendly and likes to treat younger elves, Elda and Yord, as children, calling them with playful suffixes.

Haira is seen as the perfect role model for a shrine deity, often joining local events and supporting community projects in Kanazawa.

However, her gambling often leads to money trouble and unpredictable behavior.

She is sometimes scolded by Isuzu Koimari and has a history of causing headaches for the Koimari family over many generations.

Despite her habits, the local shrine members have accepted and continue to support her warmly.

Haira was summoned by Toshiie Maeda during the old days and became the guardian deity, Uramimi Hime-no-Mikoto, at Urayumi Shrine in Kanazawa.

She is about 100 years older than Elda and Yord, making her the oldest among the main elves.

In the Edo period, she was already known for her gambling addiction, especially with the lottery and dice games.

That reputation for causing trouble with her gambling has lasted for centuries.

Haira has deep knowledge about gardening and wild plants.

She maintains a vegetable garden behind the main hall of her shrine and sometimes cooks the wild plants herself.

She can command water spirits and use their powers for water tricks and performances.

She also has skills in wrapping plants and vegetables to make them look like fine gifts.

Haira calls Elda and Yord with the playful ending “-chan,” treating them like children even though they are respected elves.

She demands that Elda call her “big sister” because of her age.

Isuzu Koimari often has to scold or rein her in when she goes overboard with gambling.

Haira’s behavior has troubled generations of the Koimari family, but she is still warmly watched over by her shrine’s community.

Haira is a fan of all types of gambling, including horse racing, boat racing, and cycling.

She has been seen dashing on a bicycle for 20 kilometers to reach a race on time.

She uses common gambling phrases and might also enjoy slot machines and pachinko.

She saves seeds from vegetables like carrots and melons, showing a caring and practical side.

In the past, she once pawned a treasured heirloom, the “Ear Tray,” to support her gambling, causing a big scandal.

The Introduction of Haira

Haira is introduced when she visits Tokyo, bringing local treats from Kanazawa.

However, her gambling habit causes her to spend all her money on scratch cards, including the money meant for gifts, hotel, and travel.

She ends up wrapping wild plants she found outside, presenting them as thoughtful souvenirs to Elda and Koito Koganei because she can't afford proper gifts.

To get back after overspending, she resorts to a bargain night bus ride for 1,500 yen.

Gambling Exploits and Troubles

Haira often sneaks out to local gambling halls in Kanazawa, including racecourses and betting arenas.

Sometimes, she’s seen hurrying on her bike for miles to catch boat races, showing her extreme passion for betting.

Her gambling habits are so reckless that even Elda, who is known for being lazy, criticizes her behavior.

Her shrine keepers and community members have had to cover up for her many times.

Past Incidents

In Edo times, Haira lost herself in gambling using the official lottery.

She was scolded harshly by shrine maidens for her addiction.

She also lost big in dice games and once pawned a sacred treasure borrowed from Elda, causing the shrine staff to put up a stone monument engraved with a poem scolding Haira for her actions.

Haira appears in Otaku Elf as one of the major elf deities living at shrines in different parts of Japan.

She is seen as a perfect example of a guardian spirit but has many unique quirks and passions that make her character stand out.
