He is known as a classic "unpopular" guy and is instantly recognized for his comic and sometimes pitiable antics. Shibata openly claims to be a fan of Erika Amano, but in reality, he comes off more like a persistent stalker. No matter how many times he tries, Shibata always ends up getting thoroughly beaten by Nagi Umino and chased away in humiliation. Despite his talk about training hard to defeat Nagi, he never actually stands a chance. He is always flanked by two equally useless lackeys (voiced by Yujiro Kakuta and Keishi Kawashima), who never participate in any fights and only shout from the sidelines.
Shibata’s main appeal is his over-the-top dedication to Erika Amano, though it quickly crosses the line into unhealthy obsession. He genuinely believes himself to be Erika's number-one supporter, but his behavior is more disruptive than supportive.
He tries to appear as a tough rival to Nagi Umino, but it’s all bluster. Every encounter ends with him thoroughly humiliated, showing that he is all talk and no action. Yet, despite constant defeat, Shibata’s stubbornness never fades; he always comes back for more.
His two "sidekicks" are mostly present for comic relief and never get involved in any real conflict. Instead, they stick to taunts and commentary from a safe distance, making Shibata look even more ridiculous.
Erika Amano
Shibata sees Erika Amano as his idol and is obsessed with winning her affection. In reality, Erika is often creeped out or annoyed by his persistent advances.
Nagi Umino
Nagi Umino is his main rival, although the rivalry is pretty one-sided. Shibata goes out of his way to challenge Nagi but always loses, both physically and morally.
The Sidekicks
These two unnamed men are a constant part of Shibata’s entourage. They offer moral support (or, more accurately, comic commentary) but never actively help him, highlighting Shibata’s lack of real allies.
Shibata’s character is intentionally over-exaggerated for comedic effect. His fruitless efforts, obsession, and the absurdity of his self-confidence deliver a lot of laughs. He represents the type of character who, against all odds and frequent beatdowns, refuses to give up chasing an impossible dream.
If you’re a fan of lovable losers and comic relief rivals, Shibata’s escapades in "A Couple of Cuckoos" are sure to stand out.
