Ramaga is the emperor of the Demon Realm and the main antagonist of Yoroi-Shinden Samurai Troopers, leading the elite Ten Brave Warriors in an invasion of the Human World for his own secret purpose.
He currently inhabits the aged body of Ryo Sanada and plans to use his own son Gai as his next vessel.
Ramaga is the absolute ruler of the Demon Realm, known as the Demon Emperor.
He wears a sinister jet-black armor and commands vast demonic forces in addition to the Ten Brave Warriors.
He initiates a full-scale invasion of the Human World, sending Gai and the Ten Brave Warriors ahead as his spearhead.
His true objective is initially unknown, even to many of his subordinates, and is revealed only gradually.
Under his rule are numerous demon soldiers who function as rank-and-file combatants.
It is unknown whether he also commands specialized trickster units or weekly “monster-of-the-episode”-style elites, but a giant centipede-type demon coiling around Sky Kaito is seen in a preview video, hinting at such forces.
Ramaga appears to have inherited a supernatural ability to disrupt or nullify human technology and weapons, a power his predecessor also possessed.
This is implied in episode 1, when a communications officer in the human defense forces cries out in despair that none of their specially researched anti-demon weapons have any effect on the invading demon army.
Ramaga’s current body is that of Ryo Sanada, who is now physically in his fifties and rapidly declining with age.
Because of this, Ramaga intends to use his son Gai as his next vessel in order to fully unleash his power.
Ramaga is cold, calculating, and deeply manipulative, viewing even his own child purely as a tool.
He believes it is natural and proper that a child should dedicate his life and body to his parent.
He treats Gai “as a son” on the surface, having Nezu raise and educate him.
In reality, he has long planned to claim Gai’s body as his next vessel once the boy reaches the age of fifteen.
Ramaga takes pleasure in psychological cruelty, often mocking Gai’s emotions and humanity.
He also shows a theatrical arrogance, meeting accusations or betrayal with calm, almost playful disdain.
Ramaga is the central villain driving the plot from the shadows and later from the forefront.
His invasion, his use of Gai, and his hidden connection to Ryo Sanada form the core of the story’s conflict.
Relationship with Gai
Ramaga is introduced as Gai’s father, whom Gai calls “old man,” but their blood relationship is never clearly confirmed.
Regardless of the blood ties, Ramaga raised Gai for the sole purpose of turning him into a vessel.
Ramaga arranged for Nezu to train and educate Gai within the Demon Realm.
Once Gai approached fifteen, Ramaga revealed that he intended to move his own soul into Gai’s body, claiming his current vessel could no longer fully contain his power.
Gai knows this plan in advance and therefore decides to become a Samurai Trooper before his fifteenth birthday.
His goal is to defeat Ramaga and live freely as a human rather than as a disposable puppet.
Powers and Abilities
Ramaga commands powerful demonic sorcery, including barrier techniques and mind-control-like spells.
He can erect a formidable barrier that deflects attacks from the Samurai Troopers.
He casts a spell on Gai’s companions that forces them into mutual slaughter, turning allies against each other.
He deliberately excludes Gai from this spell, taunting him for refusing to kill his friends.
His barrier is later revealed to be sustained by the combined power of all Ten Brave Warriors.
Breaking this layered defense requires Gai’s strategic plan to lure the Ten Brave Warriors away from their posts.
Ramaga is also capable of creating and empowering new demonic troops.
Through Gai’s own video tape and testimony, it is revealed that he strengthened the demon soldiers and created new puppet-like beings as an additional fighting force.
Episode 1
Ramaga launches the initial invasion of the Human World.
He sends Gai, the Ten Brave Warriors, and a great number of demon soldiers, resulting in mass slaughter of humans.
When he hears that Gai has been captured by humans, he remains utterly unfazed.
He simply remarks that “everything is within my hand,” implying that Gai’s capture fits his wider scheme.
The human defense forces desperately deploy weapons specifically developed to fight demons.
However, none of them work, and a communications officer screams that their anti-demon weapons are completely useless, underlining the overwhelming advantage conferred by Ramaga’s powers.
Episode 2
Ramaga informs the Ten Brave Warriors that Gai appears to be trying to obtain the Samurai Troopers’ armor gear.
He calmly remarks that Gai is likely seeking this power in order to kill him.
He then orders Nezu to bring Gai back, stating that Gai may be captured dead or alive.
This shows that as long as he can recover Gai’s body, Gai’s survival is not important to him.
Through Gai’s recorded video and his past accounts, more is revealed about Ramaga’s actions in the Demon Realm.
It is explained that Ramaga has further strengthened the demon soldiers and has created new puppet warriors as an additional military force.
Episode 4
Sasuke confronts Saizou about his suspicious behavior, causing unrest among the Ten Brave Warriors as truths begin to surface.
Ramaga chooses this moment to appear before them and, with dramatic flair, declares that he will reveal his “true objective.”
It is left unclear whether he actually tells them the complete truth.
However, Sasuke later watches Gai fight and says, impressed, that even after having his demonic power drained, Gai can still fight at that level, concluding that Ramaga’s plan is indeed real and convincing.
When Gai and his allies invade the Demon Realm, Ramaga personally takes the field to confront them.
After Gai wipes out a group of demon soldiers with his secret technique and boldly declares that he will not lose to demons, Ramaga appears leisurely and remarks, “So you have become thoroughly human, Gai,” before facing him.
Episode 5
Ramaga stands face-to-face with Gai on the battlefield.
Despite being the mastermind behind everything, he feigns wounded authority, saying, “To think my own child would betray me.”
Gai furiously retorts that Ramaga never saw him as a child, only as the “next puppet.”
Ramaga coldly replies that “offering oneself to a parent is the duty of a child,” making it clear he sees Gai’s body as his rightful property.
Gai shouts that this twisted way of thinking is exactly what he cannot stand.
The emotional clash between them escalates into a fierce battle.
Ramaga effortlessly repels the group’s attacks by deploying a powerful barrier.
He then casts a spell designed to make Gai’s companions fight and kill one another.
He intentionally leaves Gai unaffected and mocks him for refusing to kill his friends.
However, Ryuusei arrives and uses a light-based technique that breaks Ramaga’s spell, preventing the forced mutual slaughter.
Gai quickly realizes the barrier protecting Ramaga is maintained through the power of all Ten Brave Warriors.
He proposes and executes a plan to draw the Ten Brave Warriors away from their positions, weakening the barrier and allowing it to be shattered.
Even after his barrier is broken, Ramaga is far from helpless.
He counterattacks, defeats the group, and seizes the Sword of Dominion from Shion.
The sword he takes turns out to be a fake, and Ramaga is enraged by the deception.
At this point he also reveals that he himself poisoned Ryuusei.
The poison causes Ryuusei to transform into a monster, losing his human form.
Gai uses the Sword of Dominion to restore Ryuusei to normal, and it initially appears that the poison has been cleansed.
Ramaga then explains the cruel truth.
He states that the power he used on Ryuusei does not originate from the Demon Realm and that this power has perfect compatibility with the Sword of Dominion.
According to Ramaga, once that foreign power and the Sword of Dominion’s power interact, they become massively activated.
He sneers that a mere human cannot withstand this and will quickly be reduced to ashes.
As Ramaga predicts, the poison, supercharged by the Sword of Dominion, eats away at Ryuusei’s body.
Ryuusei ultimately disintegrates, dying while being watched over by Gai and the others.
Shaken by Ryuusei’s death, Gai quietly admits that humans are not such bad beings after all.
With renewed resolve, he attacks Ramaga and uses a secret technique to shatter Ramaga’s mask.
Watching from a distance, Nasty Yagyu sees Ramaga’s unveiled face.
She is shocked to realize that Ramaga’s true face is that of Ryo Sanada.
Episode 6
It is finally revealed that Ramaga’s current vessel is Ryo Sanada.
Ryo’s body, now approximately in its fifties and on the verge of old age, is rapidly deteriorating.
Because of this physical decline, Ramaga has been driven to seek a new host.
He has chosen his son Gai as his next vessel, believing Gai’s young body will better handle his full power.
Ramaga then moves the conflict to a new, dramatic stage.
He constructs a Demon Castle floating above Shinjuku, making it a visible symbol of his rule and power.
From this fortress in the sky, Ramaga gives Gai a cruel ultimatum with a seven-day deadline.
Gai must either peacefully submit to becoming Ramaga’s puppet vessel, or find another suitable puppet to take his place.
After delivering this choice, Ramaga withdraws, allowing the ticking deadline to weigh heavily on Gai and his allies.
The looming time limit heightens the tension and drives the next phase of the story.
Episode 7
Ramaga is shown in a private meeting with Saizou, suggesting secret dealings within the Ten Brave Warriors.
During their conversation, Ramaga suddenly experiences a strange disturbance affecting him.
The anomaly is quickly suppressed when he puts his mask back on.
He mutters that he will not allow anything to interfere with his plans, hinting at a deeper instability or conflict within his current vessel.
