Character Setting

Edit

Gale Wind is a male ninja-turned-monster from the ninja village in the One-Punch Man series, classified as a Dragon-level threat when transformed and affiliated with the Monster Association together with his partner Hellfire Flame.

Gale Wind is a former elite ninja from the generation known as the “Golden 37th Class” of the ninja village.

He is the senior of Onsoku no Sonic and Senkou no Flash and is originally introduced in the remake version of One-Punch Man before being “reverse-imported” into the original webcomic.

He later joins the Monster Association with Hellfire Flame and becomes a Dragon-level monster while maintaining the ability to freely switch between human and monster forms.

Even in human form he is considered Disaster Level Demon and is listed as a “Special S-Class bounty” in the Hero Association’s wanted records.

In battle, Gale Wind specializes in extreme speed, deadly wire traps, and dual blades, and he places immense pride in his velocity.

He has no loyalty to Orochi and views the Monster Association mainly as a vehicle to gain power and eventually seize control of the world alongside Hellfire Flame.

Gale Wind’s first-person pronoun is “I,” and he addresses others with a casual “you,” speaking in a relaxed, almost cocky tone.

His speech patterns are slightly rough and street-like, often ending phrases with light, casual nuances that give him a laid‑back but menacing presence.

He harbors a strong desire to flaunt his strength on the public stage rather than remain an unseen assassin.

The remake emphasizes this ambition, showing that he is tired of being used as a disposable tool in the shadows.

Gale Wind is deeply resentful of the life he led in the ninja village, where he was treated as a mere “assassin” rather than a person.

This accumulated frustration pushes him toward embracing monstrous power so he can move from the “used” side to the “ruling” side.

He respects Senkou no Flash as the true top dog in terms of raw combat ability within the Hero Association.

At the same time, he openly looks down on other heroes who cannot keep up with his speed, dismissing them as weaklings.

Despite his arrogance, Gale Wind is not delusional about top-tier threats.

He recognizes that Senkou no Flash is an extremely dangerous obstacle and plans around eliminating him carefully rather than charging in blindly.

In both versions, Gale Wind is depicted with long hair, no visible eyebrows, and notably long eyelashes, giving him a striking and somewhat androgynous look.

His physique is tall and muscular, matching his role as a front-line close-combat fighter.

In the original webcomic version, his hair reaches his shoulders and is parted from the center.

He typically wears traditional Japanese-style clothing, emphasizing his ninja heritage.

In the remake version, his hair is even longer, reaching down like a woman’s long hair and colored green in the official depiction.

Fan discussions and comments from artist Yusuke Murata indicate that Gale Wind was initially imagined as blond, and he is frequently drawn with blond hair in fan art.

He bears a face marking under his right eye similar to Onsoku no Sonic’s face paint.

A narrow, headband-like accessory crosses his forehead and can hide his eyebrows.

In the remake, his upper clothing is more modern and combat-focused: an undershirt that leaves his shoulders exposed.

Overall, he combines ninja motifs with a more contemporary fighter aesthetic.

Monster Form

When Gale Wind transforms into a monster, his entire body becomes covered in patterns reminiscent of a leopard’s spots.

From his hair, multiple antenna-like appendages resembling spider legs extend outward, reinforcing his beastly, inhuman look.

His posture and movements in monster form become even more predatory and fluid.

In this state, his Disaster Level rises to Dragon, and his already high speed reaches truly terrifying levels.

After the Monster Association arc concludes, the monstrous power he gained from monster cells is lost.

Later appearances show him back in human form only, even when he continues fighting as part of the ninja faction.

Gale Wind is widely recognized as one of the top fighters from the ninja village, especially within the group known as the Ninja Heavenly Faction in the original.

Senkou no Flash estimates him among the upper ranks of that organization.

In the remake, Gale Wind’s disaster level in human form is Demon.

Additionally, he is recorded as a “Special S-Class bounty,” indicating that his threat level and capture priority are on par with S-Class heroes.

Gale Wind is fast enough in human form to effortlessly catch Onsoku no Sonic’s Exploding Shuriken.

Given Sonic’s S-Class-equivalent combat ability, this speaks to Gale’s overwhelming speed and reflexes even before transforming.

However, he admits that he cannot match certain monsters from the same ninja village background, such as the “Human Trafficking King” Abrabose (a trafficker-king type powerhouse).

This sense of inferiority and being outclassed by others contributes to his dissatisfaction with his old life.

As a monster, Gale Wind reaches Disaster Level Dragon, and his speed becomes so extreme that even Sonic, a specialist in speed, is terrified.

Senkou no Flash, who rarely praises others, states that if even one of Gale Wind or Hellfire Flame were allowed to slip away, it would cause serious trouble later.

Gale is confident that his velocity surpasses that of the hero hunter Garou, robots, and even psychics.

Despite this, he still acknowledges that Senkou no Flash is not someone to underestimate.

One weakness is that his monsterization is relatively recent, so he relies more on raw power and speed than fully refined ninja arts while transformed.

This brute-force style is technically his strongest mode, but it leaves room for tactical exploitation by someone more skilled than he is, such as Senkou no Flash.

Techniques and Weapons

Gale Wind uses a variety of weapons and techniques grounded in ninja assassination arts.

He excels at both mid-range trap setups and close-quarters combat.

He deploys metal wires around the battlefield like a spiderweb, using them to slice enemies who move carelessly.

These steel threads allow him to control space and surprise opponents who rely purely on direct combat.

For melee, he wields a pair of kukri-like curved blades.

His dual-wielding style emphasizes speed, flanking, and slashing from blind spots, often in perfect coordination with Hellfire Flame.

His body techniques are highly advanced due to his ninja training.

He frequently combines his movements with Hellfire Flame’s fire-based attacks for devastating combo assaults.

Signature Move: Storm Blade Kick

Gale Wind’s named finishing move is Storm Blade Kick.

In this technique, he uses high-speed kicks enhanced by cutting power, turning his legs into storm-like blades that tear through targets.

The move is designed to exploit his superhuman mobility, letting him hit multiple times in rapid succession.

It embodies his philosophy of “win by speed,” overwhelming opponents before they can react.

Hellfire Flame

Hellfire Flame is Gale Wind’s closest partner and fellow survivor of the Golden 37th Class.

The two almost always act together, whether as assassins, members of the Monster Association, or later as rogue ninjas.

Both share resentment toward their life as disposable assassins and the desire to rule rather than be used.

They jointly decide to eat monster cells, transform into monsters, and join the Monster Association to gain enough power to challenge the world.

In battle, the pair employ seamless tag-team tactics, combining Gale Wind’s cutting wires and blades with Hellfire Flame’s explosive fire attacks.

Their synergy is high enough that they are considered a serious multi-Dragon-level threat when working together.

Onsoku no Sonic

Onsoku no Sonic is Gale Wind’s junior from the same ninja village and also from the Golden 37th Class era.

Gale sees him as a valuable speed-type fighter, but also as someone whose current level is not enough to stand at the very top.

Gale approaches Sonic on behalf of the Monster Association, offering him monster cells to recruit him.

He intends for Sonic to act as “cleanup” to keep other interference away when Gale and Hellfire Flame fight Senkou no Flash.

Sonic does not eat the monster cell correctly (he cooks it instead of eating it raw), so Gale mistakenly assumes he died from failing to adapt to the cells.

Later, Gale’s contempt toward Sonic backfires when Sonic survives and continues climbing in strength independently.

Senkou no Flash

Senkou no Flash is Gale Wind’s junior from the ninja village and the primary target of his obsession.

Gale views Flash as the strongest among the Hero Association’s fighters and the only true obstacle to his and Hellfire Flame’s desire to rule.

In the remake, Gale and Hellfire Flame specifically join the Monster Association with the main goal of eventually defeating Senkou no Flash.

They see the Association as a convenient power-up route and cover for their true personal revenge.

Despite his arrogance, Gale never fully underestimates Flash and prepares tactics to ensure his defeat.

Flash, in turn, acknowledges Gale and Hellfire Flame as dangerous enough that letting even one escape would cause serious problems down the line.

During their decisive battle, Gale tries to leverage his newly acquired monstrous speed and raw power.

However, Flash ultimately surpasses even their maximum speed, cutting both Gale and Hellfire Flame down with his ultimate technique, the Flash Slash.

Other Monster Association Members

Gale Wind has no real loyalty to Orochi, the so-called “Monster King.”

During a Monster Association meeting, he internally plans to let Orochi destroy the heroes and then overthrow or abandon him afterward, similar to Black Sperm’s attitude.

He cooperates with other monsters only as far as it helps achieve his own goals.

His primary allegiance is always to Hellfire Flame and to his vision of a world where they sit at the top.

Hero Association and Heroes

Gale Wind regards most heroes as fodder, especially any who cannot keep up with his speed.

He believes they are unworthy foes unless they can match him in velocity and reflexes.

That said, he singles out Senkou no Flash as a significant threat and a high-priority target.

He also acknowledges that S-Class-level speedsters or specialists in unusual abilities (like certain psychics) could be annoyances if left unchecked.

After being revived later by Phoenix Man’s reincarnation ability, Gale briefly interacts with Child Emperor.

He attempts to use the exhausted Child Emperor as bait to lure Senkou no Flash into a trap.

Joining the Ninja Heavenly Faction

In the original webcomic continuity, Gale Wind becomes part of an organization known as the Ninja Heavenly Faction.

This group acts in the shadows under the leadership of a mysterious “That Person,” with Gale taking a prominent position.

The Ninja Heavenly Faction’s mission includes the assassination of Senkou no Flash.

To set up the kill, Gale and his comrades first approach Onsoku no Sonic, using him as bait to draw Flash into a vulnerable position.

When the trap is sprung, Gale and the Ninja Heavenly Faction attempt to ambush Flash.

However, Sonic fully betrays them and turns on the faction, deciding to fight alongside Flash instead.

Despite having a total of twenty-one members in the Ninja Heavenly Faction, the group is annihilated by the combined might of Sonic and Senkou no Flash.

Gale Wind realizes that both juniors have grown far beyond expectations.

Before dying, Gale speaks of the horrifying, incomprehensible terror associated with “That Person.”

He insists that there is no escape from that mysterious figure, hinting at an even deeper darkness behind the ninja village.

Ironically, the “That Person” who awaited Sonic and Flash at the end of the path had already been instantly defeated by Saitama.

Gale dies unaware that the ultimate terror he feared has been casually removed by One-Punch Man himself.

Joining the Monster Association

In the remake version, Gale Wind is introduced first as a member of the Monster Association.

He appears before Onsoku no Sonic with Hellfire Flame, offering him monster cells and inviting him to join the Association.

Gale’s goal is to secure a battlefield where he and Hellfire Flame can fight Senkou no Flash without interference.

By recruiting Sonic, he hopes Sonic will act as a vanguard to fend off distractions and ensure a clean duel with Flash.

He instructs Sonic to eat the monster cell raw to trigger monsterization.

When Sonic instead cooks it and suffers only stomach problems, Gale mistakenly believes Sonic failed to adapt and died, writing him off as a lost candidate.

Back at the Monster Association’s base, Gale attends a general assembly of monsters.

He shows open indifference to Orochi’s authority and silently plots a future in which Orochi is removed once the heroes are wiped out.

Battle Against Senkou no Flash

When the Hero Association launches a full-scale assault on the Monster Association, Gale Wind and Hellfire Flame engage Senkou no Flash in battle.

They initially attack in human form, testing Flash’s capacity and searching for openings.

As the fight escalates, they shift into their monster forms at the urging of the surrounding monsters.

The transformation pushes their physical speed and power far beyond human limits, leading to high-speed clashes that ordinary eyes cannot follow.

Challenged by Flash’s composure, Gale becomes angry and decides to attack with his full speed, abandoning caution.

He believes that his boosted monstrous velocity will finally outstrip even Flash’s famous quickness.

However, Senkou no Flash unveils techniques that surpass even their best efforts.

With a single decisive move, Flash’s Flash Slash cuts down both Gale Wind and Hellfire Flame.

In his final moments, Gale confesses his inner frustration and despair.

He explains that their entire lives had been spent as tools—assassins who were never treated as human beings and discarded once used.

Gale reveals that he and Hellfire Flame sought monstrous power so they could escape being on the “used” side and become part of the “rulers.”

Tears in his eyes, he asks Flash what they lacked to reach that level.

Flash quietly gives a simple answer: “Training.”

Without further words, Flash leaves, while Gale and Hellfire Flame appear to die from their wounds.

Revival by Phoenix Man

Later, Phoenix Man uses his reincarnation abilities to revive Gale Wind and Hellfire Flame.

They are restored to life and regain consciousness, though their memories of their defeat at Flash’s hands are missing or incomplete.

At that time, the severely exhausted Child Emperor is nearby.

Seeing an opportunity, Gale and Hellfire Flame attack Child Emperor, intending to use him as a lure to draw out Senkou no Flash.

Before they can finish their plan, Saitama arrives.

With a single punch, he knocks out both Gale and Hellfire Flame simultaneously and they are captured.

In the original printed version of chapter 142, Gale Wind is shown wandering around completely naked in human form while searching for Senkou no Flash.

When he and Hellfire Flame confront Saitama, he recognizes Saitama as a hero and attacks, only to have his moves casually read and dismissed.

Amused and mildly disturbed, Saitama concludes that Gale is just a random pervert and lets him go.

Later, the chapter is redrawn so that Gale is no longer fully naked, maintaining the comedic tone while adjusting the visuals.

In the redrawn version, instead of just being written off as a streaker, Gale and Hellfire Flame attempt to exploit Child Emperor as bait.

Saitama quickly ends the fight, knocking them out in a single blow and allowing the heroes to restrain them.

Later Activities and Survival

After these events, Gale Wind apparently manages to escape confinement.

He resurfaces alongside other members of the ninja factions, still involved in plots connected to the ninja village.

He and Hellfire Flame continue their obsession with defeating Senkou no Flash.

They repeatedly challenge him, now back in human form only, as their monster powers have been lost.

In one such operation, Gale participates in an attempt by the ninja factions to capture or eliminate Onsoku no Sonic and Senkou no Flash.

When Gale acts on his own initiative and attacks Sonic’s hideout, the other Ninja Heavenly Party members reprimand him for acting independently.

As punishment for acting out of line, Gale is declared unworthy as a heavenly ninja and has his arm broken by his own comrades.

This marks a stark contrast to his earlier image as a respected senior, showing his fall in internal status.

Later, during a combined effort to subdue Sonic and Flash, Gale is used as a shield, being thrown forward and taken out at the front line.

Afterward, Flash captures him alive to be used as a test subject for reversing monsterization, reducing Gale to a “lab rat” role.

Onsoku no Sonic sarcastically comments, “Good for you, guinea pig senior,” mocking Gale’s fall from feared assassin to experimental subject.

Despite everything, Gale survives and continues to appear with Hellfire Flame and other ninja, unlike his apparent death in the original webcomic.

Gale Wind was first created for the remake version of One-Punch Man illustrated by Yusuke Murata.

Only later did he appear in the original webcomic (chapter 115) in a reinterpreted form, essentially being “reverse-imported” from the remake back to the source.

In the original webcomic, characters named the Reckless Brothers Rep and Goka appear and share some superficial similarities in naming style with Gale Wind and Hellfire Flame.

However, Yusuke Murata has stated in a stream that these are different characters created by someone else and should not be considered the same as Gale and Flame.

Murata has also mentioned that he imagined Gale Wind with blond hair.

Because of this, many fan artists on illustration platforms depict Gale with blond hair even though the remake features him with green hair.

Within the Golden 37th Class, besides Gale Wind and Hellfire Flame, there is also another classmate named Thunder of Roaring Thunder.

This emphasizes that their generation is filled with powerful speed- and power-focused fighters from the ninja village.
