Mary Harvey

Mary Harvey is a female sorceress who serves as both the coordinator and de facto leader of the Seven Sages in the Kingdom of Ridill.

She specializes in astrology-based divination that reads the movement of celestial bodies to foresee the future of individuals and the nation.

She comes from the prestigious Belsting Marquess House, a noble family famed for its magical talent.

Within that family, she is recognized as the most powerful sorcerer and is the younger sister of the current marquess.

Her apparent physical age is in her mid-twenties, but her actual age is estimated to be in her early sixties (around 63 at the start of the story).

She has held the position of Seven Sage for more than 30 years.

Two years before the main story, the previous oldest member of the Seven Sages, Graham Sanders (then in his eighties), retired during a selection conference where Monica Everett was chosen.

When Graham stepped down and Mary remained, she became both the most senior and the oldest of the current Seven Sages.

She is effectively the coordinator of the group, taking on tasks that require trust and political balance.

Because of her neutrality and reliability, Mary single-handedly carries out the Seven Sages’ representative duty of acting as advisor to the king.

She also coordinates with external bodies such as the nobles’ council and manages negotiations between magical authorities and secular power.

Inside the Seven Sages, Mary serves as the central pillar who keeps communication flowing.

She checks in on the mental state, growth, and problems of each member, guiding them both professionally and personally.

Her work includes not only forecasting national crises using astrology, but also handling the fallout: planning, advising, and smoothing over conflicts among nobles and institutions.

This combination of foresight and political skill makes her one of the kingdom’s most valuable assets.

Mary’s title, “Star-Reading Witch,” comes from her mastery of an advanced form of astrology.

By observing the positions and movements of stars and other celestial bodies, she can perform high-precision divination and limited prophecy.

Her predictions are not omnipotent or perfectly detailed, but their accuracy is unusually high compared to ordinary divination.

Because her foresight can influence matters of war, succession, and national policy, her readings are treated with great seriousness at court.

To maximize the effectiveness of her magic, Mary’s mansion is built with extensive glasswork so that the sky is almost always visible.

She can observe the stars at any time, turning her home almost into a private observatory.

This habit has turned into something of a professional quirk.

Even when she is entertaining guests in her mansion, she may suddenly drift off to look at the stars if something in the sky catches her attention.

Her first prophecy was of the death of Darius Knightley’s father, an event that occurred during their youth in wartime.

Mary has never entirely recovered from the emotional weight of foreseeing that death, and she still holds complicated feelings about it.

Mary is the most averse to direct combat among the Seven Sages and prefers to avoid violent confrontations.

Even so, she is not a one-trick prophet: she can use sealing magic and illusion magic, both of which are considered high-difficulty magical systems usually mastered only by specialists.

Within the Seven Sages, her illusions are among the most refined in both scale and precision.

Her motivation to perfect illusion magic was partly personal and humorous—she wanted to create illusions of her ideal beautiful boys, and that artistic obsession significantly boosted her skill.

As the strongest magic-user of the Belsting Marquess House, Mary also serves as the caretaker of the ancient magical artifact “Star Weaver Mira,” which is traditionally managed by the head of the family.

Because of her superior talent, she is entrusted to guard and oversee this relic in place of the current marquess.

Darius Knightley

Mary is a childhood friend of Darius Knightley, the Duke of Crockford and an influential statesman in Ridill.

They are of the same age, and at one time they were engaged to be married.

Their youth coincided with a war against an empire.

During that period, Darius’s father, the previous duke, opposed continuing the war and was murdered by the angry populace for his stance.

Mary’s father then unilaterally broke off her engagement with Darius, using the Duke family’s tarnished political position as the justification.

This deeply hurt Mary, who saw the decision as unfair and rooted in cowardly opportunism.

To this day she bitterly says, “If you have complaints, go say them to the grave—talk to Father there,” indicating that she still resents her late father’s choice.

Her frustration is not directed at Darius himself but at the injustice of the situation and her inability to change it back then.

Even after decades, Mary still harbors lingering affection for Darius and has effectively kept herself devoted only to him.

By her own admission, she finds his lack of obvious charm endearingly cute—his “unlovable” points are exactly what she loves.

She continues to address him in a familiar, junior-style way, effectively calling him “Darius-chan,” which has become popular among readers as well.

This pet name is one of the running in-jokes of the series, reflecting Mary’s mixture of teasing and genuine fondness.
