Character Setting

Edit

Chi is the main character in both "Karakai Jouzu no (ex) Takagi-san" and "Teasing Master (?) Nishikata-san." She is the beloved daughter of Takagi and Nishikata, showing her mother’s kind face and her father’s expressive reactions. First appearing as a toddler in the "Memory" episode, Chi goes on to be featured both as a young child and, later, as a middle school student. Her full name is never given, and she is simply called “Chi.” She is cheerful, curious, and sometimes mischievous, always ready to tease her father or get teased in return. The stories follow Chi growing up, showing her relationships with friends and family, her love for sweets, and her playful daily life.

Appearance

Chi looks a lot like her mother, Takagi, especially in her smiles and facial features.

She also shows expressions and reactions that are similar to her father, Nishikata.

As a young child, she has short hair and a cute, energetic look.

When she is shown as a middle school student, she appears more like Takagi did at that age, but her hair is still a bit shorter and she still has a young, innocent face.

Personality

Chi is cheerful, curious, and full of energy.

She is always excited to try new things and enjoys helping her mother with cooking and baking snacks.

Chi loves to have fun and is quick to tease others, just like her parents.

She can be mischievous and sometimes plays tricks on her dad, Nishikata, while her mom, Takagi, is quick to tease her right back.

She is kind, hard-working, and very loving towards her family and friends.

Chi is also a bit competitive, especially with a boy she plays with in the park, and loves winning games, though she often gets teased instead.

Background

Chi first appears in the future episode "Memory" as a small child, before her name is decided.

When "Karakai Jouzu no (ex) Takagi-san" started, she became known as “Chi.”

Throughout the series, she appears mostly as a preschooler, but sometimes as a middle schooler in special chapters or story extras.

Her real, full name has never been revealed.

Chi’s childhood is mostly spent at home and preschool, making friends and learning new things from her parents.

As she grows, she experiences new stories, like going to middle school and meeting someone from her past again.

Abilities

Chi is eager to help with cooking and is good at making simple treats with her mother.

She is trying to ride a bike without training wheels and learning how to do tricks like jump rope and kendama (cup-and-ball game).

Though she isn’t the best at singing, both her mother and her preschool teacher Mina Hibino give her lessons to help her improve.

She works hard to get better at things and always tries her best.

Relationships

Chi is the daughter of Takagi and Nishikata.

She loves both her parents very much, often saying she wants to marry her dad and feeling happy when people say she looks like her mom.

Her favorite friends include Nana, who is in her preschool, and a boy she plays with at the park.

Even when she is teased by the boy, she enjoys spending time with him and always wants to challenge him to games.

She also treasures her plush toy, Tanusuke, and later, the family’s new dog, Kurosuke.

Plot

Early Childhood

Chi first appears in "Memory" as a toddler, just after Takagi and Nishikata are married.

At this time, she is still very young and doesn’t have a name.

She is seen playing at home, learning new things, and being loving towards her parents.

Preschool Life

Most of "Karakai Jouzu no (ex) Takagi-san" shows Chi as a preschooler.

She loves playing with her friend Nana, going to school, and spending time with her parents.

She tries hard to learn new skills, like singing and riding a bike, even when it’s difficult for her.

She loves helping her mother in the kitchen, making both savory food and sweets.

Her plushie, Tanusuke, is always by her side.

She is competitive with a boy from the local park, often losing games to him, which makes her want to keep trying.

Middle School Life

In bonus chapters and in "Teasing Master (?) Nishikata-san," Chi is shown as a middle school student.

She now calls herself “I” instead of “Chi.”

She has grown to look more like her mother, but she still sometimes makes funny mistakes with words, like saying “atatatai” instead of “atatakai” (“warm”).

She keeps her love for manju (sweet buns) and dislike for green peppers, scallops, and broccoli, though she slowly learns to eat them.

In school, Chi sits next to a boy who likes to tease her, just like her parents used to tease each other.

Chi feels shy about her feelings for him, and her mother encourages their friendship, teasing her gently.

This boy is actually the same one from the park she played with as a child, and they are reunited in the chapter "Entrance Ceremony."

Trivia

Chi’s favorite food is chestnut manju (sweet bun), and she loves apple juice.

She does not like green peppers, scallops, or broccoli, and, like her dad, she can’t drink coffee.

Her favorite toy is a plush tanuki named Tanusuke.

She is very attached to the family’s dog, Kurosuke, later in the series.

She often writes in a childish way and sometimes mixes up words.

She wants to be like her mother and feels proud when people tell her they look alike.

In the anime, Chi is seen as a middle schooler in the episode "Disliked Things," and as a toddler in the movie’s ending.

She has a special cat named Saku in the movie, which does not appear in other versions.

In the live-action version, Chi appears briefly during the ending credits.

Others

Chi’s appearances are split into preschool and middle school parts in the story, showing her growth and changes over time.

Her real name is never revealed; everyone just calls her Chi.

She is the heart of her family’s daily life and is loved by all the people around her.
