Character Setting

Edit

Douman Ashiya is a mysterious old man who looks almost like the walking dead, but his voice is surprisingly young. He is rumored to be behind recent strange events, and people from the Onmyo Agency secretly call him "D." Douman is so powerful that even the elite onmyoji and students can’t beat him—not even if they team up. He is unpredictable but sometimes helps people he likes, no matter which side they are on. His real identity is the legendary onmyoji, Douman Ashiya, who lives on as a spirit and uses different dead bodies as vessels. He also has a strong interest in the Tsuchimikado family and keeps showing up to cause trouble or offer help as he pleases. Douman’s guardian demons, Gozu and Mezu, add even more to his strange legend.

Douman Ashiya appears as a very old man who looks almost like a corpse.

His body isn’t truly alive, but instead is a spirit possessing different dead vessels.

Sometimes his vessel changes; for example, after being destroyed, he comes back using a young boy's body.

No matter what body he uses, his presence is always chilling and powerful.

Douman Ashiya is extremely unpredictable.

He enjoys teasing others and can suddenly switch sides or help out people he finds interesting.

He laughs a lot, sometimes even at dangerous moments.

He doesn’t care very much about rules, and he treats enemies and friends just the same if he likes them.

Douman Ashiya is actually the legendary onmyoji who lived a long time ago.

He became a powerful spirit after his original body died, and he has found many different vessels to walk the world again.

He was the rival of Abe no Seimei, another legendary onmyoji.

Douman is fascinated by the Tsuchimikado family, especially their famous ancestor, Tsuchimikado Yakou, and has even met him before.

Douman Ashiya’s skills are legendary.

He can easily face groups of strong onmyoji from the Onmyo Agency and the school without worry.

He commands powerful shikigami and performs amazing spells.

Destroying his vessel only slows him down; he can quickly return by possessing a new one.

Even Jin Ootomo, a respected onmyoji, thought the only option at their first meeting was to escape—no matter what.

Douman Ashiya is a deep rival to Abe no Seimei and has a great interest in the Tsuchimikado family.

He thinks highly of Tsuchimikado Yakou and keeps tabs on his descendants.

He has a complicated, almost playful relationship with Jin Ootomo, sometimes even helping him by lending knowledge or making contracts.

He has two loyal protector demons:

  • Gozu, an unusually large man with dreadlocks who mixes English into his words and is not fond of Jin Ootomo,
  • Mezu, a tall, thin woman with a ponytail who speaks kindly and calls Jin "Boss"; she always follows Douman’s orders.

Both demons admire and respect Douman very much.

The Shadow in the Agency

Rumors spread throughout the Onmyo Agency that a fearsome figure, “D,” is working behind the recent crises.

This is Douman Ashiya, whose arrival puts everyone on edge.

Even Jin Ootomo feels threatened when they first meet and thinks escape is the only option.

Douman’s actions keep everyone guessing because he often changes sides unexpectedly.

Attacking the Onmyo School

Douman attacks the Onmyo School, fighting with the best students and teachers.

During a magic battle with Jin Ootomo, a trap set by Atsune Hirata destroys Douman’s vessel.

But soon after, Douman returns by taking over a young boy’s body he had saved earlier.

He then helps Jin Ootomo as a way of saying thanks for their duel, making a shikigami contract with him.

Watching Over Harutora and the Tsuchimikado Family

Douman follows the movements of Harutora Tsuchimikado, interested in the fate of the Tsuchimikado family.

He secretly watches as they travel to Hoshiyado Temple but doesn’t have a chance to meet Harutora face to face.

He sees their story unfold from afar.

The Divine Ritual and Turning the Tables

After the powerful ritual succeeds and Lord Masakado appears, Douman urges Jin, Somma, and others to dive deeper into the world of magic.

Then, Abe no Seimei (using Akino’s body) asks Douman to settle an old favor.

Douman laughs, draws out Jin’s spirit energy, abandons his vessel, and fights Takiko in his true wild spirit form.

He helps Harutora and his friends escape the chaos.

Douman’s protectors, Gozu and Mezu, add even more color to his story.

Gozu stands out with his dreadlocks, massive build, and strange way of speaking.

He dislikes following Jin Ootomo’s orders.

Mezu is tall, slim, has a ponytail, and always ends sentences with “-wa.”

She obediently follows both Douman and Jin if asked.

They both worship Douman, calling him “Master” and “Lord Douman,” and speak highly of him.

Douman Ashiya’s use of different dead bodies as vessels is very rare and special.

His knowledge and power are unmatched even among legendary onmyoji.

He both causes trouble and helps out, making him one of the most unpredictable characters in the story.
