Genau is a first-class mage and one of Serie’s disciples.

He serves as the proctor for the first test of the First-Class Mage Examination and later joins a demon extermination mission in the Northern Plateau.

He is cold, calculating, and utterly pragmatic, believing that achieving the objective justifies any means.

He does not hesitate to abandon or sacrifice people if it is necessary, and he shows no guilt even when many examinees die or are injured under his watch.

Despite this, his ruthlessness is not simple cruelty but a twisted survival strategy shaped by a brutal world.

He openly acknowledges his own personality in a positive light, yet also reveals a lingering self-loathing, as if he despises that this is the only way he knows how to live.

Genau is voiced by voice actor Tarusuke Shingaki in the anime adaptation.

Genau deeply values the meaning and status of being a first-class mage.

Because of this, he imposes merciless trials on examinees, believing that anyone truly worthy will survive even lethal conditions.

He is accustomed to death and treats it almost as a matter of routine.

When examinees die during the exam, he shows no outward remorse, and he even mocks the weak with comments like:

“You amuse me. Anyone truly promising will not die from something like this.”

However, beneath that icy exterior, he recognizes the cruelty of the world he lives in.

He is troubled by the recurring reality that kind-hearted mages and people who do not seek battle are often the first to die.

This internal conflict gives him a subtle layer of bitterness and self-hatred.

He criticizes himself as someone who can only live by being ruthless, even as he continues to act that way to survive.

Methode sees him as a “negative example,” the kind of person she does not want to become.

Genau himself advises her not to follow his path, warning her against becoming like him.

Serie, who understands both his usefulness and his emotional burden, gives him a backhanded sort of kindness.

She tells him to “stay exactly as he is,” implying that if he ever allows his hidden kindness to surface too much, it might lead to his death.

Even when he claims that he no longer feels anything about his destroyed hometown, his actions suggest otherwise.

He chooses to remain in the ruined village, out of obligation, to protect the bodies of the fallen, hinting at a compassion he refuses to admit.

Stark, after witnessing Genau’s behavior and choices, concludes simply that “Genau is a good guy.”

This external perspective contrasts sharply with Genau’s own negative view of himself and highlights his hidden moral core.

First-Class Mage Examination

Genau serves as the proctor for the first test of the First-Class Mage Examination in the city of Aysarst.

He observes the test alongside Sense, evaluating the candidates with a cool, detached attitude.

From the start, he is confident that Denken will pass the first test.

He calmly watches the dangerous trial unfold, unmoved by the casualties among the examinees.

A powerful barrier for the examination site is prepared by Serie herself.

When Frieren manages to break Serie’s barrier, even Genau, normally unflappable, is genuinely surprised by her feat.

His conduct during the exam reinforces his reputation as a cold judge of talent.

He cares only about whether someone has the strength and resolve to become a first-class mage, not about their safety.

Demon Extermination in the Northern Plateau

After the First-Class Mage Examination concludes, Serie assigns Genau a mission in the Northern Plateau.

He is ordered to lead a demon extermination in the Lufen region of the Northern Plateau and teams up with Methode for this task.

When he arrives in the region, he discovers that his own hometown has been destroyed by demons.

The village was annihilated by an army led by the demon general known as Divine Technique Revolte.

Genau and Methode meet Frieren, Fern, and Stark, who had already been requested to handle the extermination.

Realizing they share the same target, they coordinate to confront Revolte’s forces.

To intercept the enemy, Genau chooses to stay behind in the devastated village alongside Stark.

Although he claims to feel nothing about the destruction of his home, he stays to protect the corpses of the villagers out of duty.

This decision hints that he still cares about his origins and the dead, even if he refuses to frame it as emotion.

His behavior during this time is what leads Stark to quietly regard him as a fundamentally decent person.

General Combat Style

Even though he is a mage, Genau specializes in close-quarters combat.

He combines powerful offensive and defensive magic with physical aggression, making him extremely dangerous at short range.

He prefers to fight on the front lines rather than stand behind allies.

This sets him apart from many mages who rely on distance and support, and it complements warriors like Stark very well.

Black-Gold Wing Magic: Digadnacht

Genau’s signature spell is a powerful magic that manifests black-gold wings: Digadnacht.

These wings provide both offense and defense, allowing him to attack, guard, and maneuver in battle.

The wings function as both armor and weapons.

They can shield him from devastating blows and strike enemies with cutting or piercing force at close range.

Digadnacht enhances his mobility, enabling aggressive rushes and mid-air positioning.

It reinforces his preferred style: a mage who fights like an elite melee combatant infused with magic.

This spell is crucial in his battle against Divine Technique Revolte.

Even while grievously wounded, he continues to wield Digadnacht to press the attack alongside Stark.

Genau has a personal vendetta against Divine Technique Revolte.

In the past, Revolte killed Genau’s former partner, making the demon general not only a mission target but also a deeply personal enemy.

During the Northern Plateau mission, Genau finally confronts Revolte face-to-face.

He fights in tandem with Stark, combining Stark’s physical swordsmanship with his own black-gold wing magic Digadnacht.

The battle is brutal and pushes both combatants to their limits.

Genau is severely injured, his body pierced and left in critical condition.

Despite his grievous wounds, the combined efforts of Genau and Stark eventually overpower Divine Technique Revolte.

They succeed in slaying the demon general, bringing closure to Genau’s long-standing grudge.

After the battle, Methode uses her recovery magic to heal Genau’s life-threatening injuries.

Thanks to her healing, he survives and is able to resume his duties.

Serie

Serie is Genau’s master and one of the highest authorities within the Continental Magic Association.

She recognizes his harsh, pragmatic nature and relies on it, assigning him missions that demand ruthlessness and clear judgment.

Her advice to him—to remain as he is so that his kindness will not get him killed—shows a rare, indirect concern.

It suggests that she sees through his cold behavior and understands the vulnerability beneath it.

Methode

Methode works together with Genau on the demon extermination mission in the Northern Plateau Lufen region.

To her, Genau is a “negative example” of what she does not want to become: a mage who survives by sacrificing others and shutting off his softer emotions.

Genau, in turn, tells her directly not to become like him.

He encourages her to keep the part of herself that he has long buried, reinforcing his role as a sort of cautionary mentor.

After the battle against Divine Technique Revolte, Methode heals Genau’s mortal wounds with recovery magic.

Following this, Genau takes on the role of escorting the knights and brings Methode along as he parts ways with Frieren’s group.

Frieren, Fern, and Stark

Genau first becomes aware of Frieren’s capabilities when she breaks Serie’s barrier during the first-class exam.

Later, he formally works with Frieren, Fern, and Stark on the demon extermination in his home region.

He does not show much overt camaraderie toward Frieren and Fern, but he respects their strength and efficiency.

His methods resonate more clearly with the battlefield-minded Stark, who fights side by side with him.

Stark and Genau share a warrior’s bond forged in life-or-death combat.

After seeing Genau risk himself and stay behind in the ruined village to protect the dead, Stark comes to view him as a genuinely good person.

This outside recognition contrasts with Genau’s own self-image, highlighting the hidden nobility in his actions.

Even if he denies it, his choices reveal a man who still values others, even at great personal cost.
