Character Setting

Edit

Nao Kanzaki is the female protagonist of LIAR GAME, an 18-year-old college student famous for her extreme honesty and known as “Nao the Foolishly Honest.”

Name: Nao Kanzaki

Gender: Female

Age: 18

Nao Kanzaki is a kindhearted young woman who trusts others very easily and helps people almost to a fault.

Her personality is the complete opposite of the deceptive, ruthless nature of the LIAR GAME.

She is so honest that she once took a single 100-yen coin to a police box, and she believed Shinichi Akiyama so completely that she waited in the same place for 26 hours after he told her to stay there.

Because of this, she is often called “Nao the Foolishly Honest.”

Her name was created from a family name the author Shinobu Kaitani liked the sound of, combined with the character for “honesty” or “straightforwardness.”

From the beginning, she stands out as someone whose sincerity is both her greatest weakness and her greatest strength.

Nao is emotionally expressive, compassionate, and unusually selfless.

In the early stages of the story, her strong emotions sometimes make her cry or panic when events turn against her.

At the same time, she has a surprising amount of courage and initiative.

Even in tense situations, she can behave openly and fearlessly, and as the games continue she becomes much steadier under pressure.

Although her basic nature never changes, she gradually learns how to lie when necessary.

These lies are not used to hurt others, but to help people escape the game with no net loss or to push suspicious players into negotiation.

Her honesty remains the core of who she is.

Because she sincerely tries to save even her opponents, many people who face her are eventually moved enough to accept a draw or a loss that frees them from the LIAR GAME.

This gives her a different kind of strength from the more aggressive players around her.

As the story progresses, her will becomes one of the strongest in the entire competition.

Nao begins the series as someone badly unsuited for a contest built on lies, manipulation, and betrayal.

However, continued participation in the LIAR GAME leads to major emotional and mental growth.

Over time, she becomes capable of acting on her own instead of relying entirely on Shinichi Akiyama.

She even reaches the point where she can deceive major players such as Fukunaga, Akiyama, and even Yokoya.

Her ability to keep promises, her generosity, and the sincerity in the way she appeals to others give her powerful charisma.

After the end of the fourth round, even the dealers acknowledge that her ability to move people’s hearts is not inferior to Harimoto’s.

As the games go on, not only participants like Akiyama, Yokoya, and Fukunaga, but also members of the game’s administration, especially Leronira, begin to pay close attention to her actions.

She becomes a figure others cannot ignore.

Nao comes to believe that the true principle and winning method of the LIAR GAME is simple: everyone must be honest.

In her view, victory becomes possible only when no one tries to profit by pushing someone else into ruin.

She does not keep this idea private.

She openly declares it and tries to act on it throughout the game.

This belief produces one of her greatest achievements during Bid Poker.

Nearly all participants unite around a single point of trust: that Nao Kanzaki will never betray them.

Nao’s mother died when she was very young.

Her father is terminally ill with cancer and is staying in a hospice.

At first, her motivation is to win the LIAR GAME and get out quickly so that she will not worry her father.

Later, her goal expands into something much larger: she decides she wants to save the other participants as well.

As the protagonist, Nao represents a direct challenge to the central premise of the LIAR GAME.

She enters a world built on deceit while insisting on trust, empathy, and mutual rescue.

That contrast makes her one of the most distinctive figures in the series.

Rather than becoming cynical, she grows stronger while staying true to her original moral core.

In the second round, her nameplate number is 19.

In the second revival match, she serves as the commanding general of the Eastern Army.

In the fourth round, her nickname is “the sole woman” or “the only flower among them.”

In the final round, her registration number is 5.

She loses in the third revival match and misses the right to advance to the finals on her own.

However, she still appears on the final stage by participating as the proxy representative for Matsuwa Fuuma.

In the original version, her voice actor is Saya Nimi.

In the television drama adaptation, she is portrayed by Erika Toda.
