Character Setting

Edit

F. Nightingale is a female member of the Japanese faction of the Forest of Great Men in Petals of Reincarnation, publicly known as a rear-line healer but later revealed to be the hidden mastermind manipulating the group from the shadows.

At first glance, F. Nightingale appears to be a support specialist who stays behind the front lines and treats injured allies.

She is said to spend much of her time with Hiroshi Funasaka.

During the battle against Xiang Yu, she remained at the base together with John V. Neumann.

That quiet role, however, concealed her true importance.

She was in fact controlling members of the Forest of Great Men, including Neumann, through her Talent.

Using Neumann as an intermediary, she issued orders indirectly and steered the organization from behind the scenes.

After I. Newton returned from the battle with Xiang Yu, F. Nightingale brainwashed him and made him attack A. Einstein.

Following the annihilation of the criminal army, she moved forward with the Plan to Turn All Humanity into Great Figures.

She then declared war by proclaiming that the Forest of Great Men would destroy humanity within three months.

This marked the full exposure of her role as the organization’s real instigator.

In the past, she conducted research on Returners at a place known as the Sanatorium.

She was also personally acquainted with Xiang Yu.

She formerly belonged to the Medical Arts Society.

This background fits her medical image, though it also hides the sinister use of her healing powers.

Her previous life is identified as Florence Nightingale, the historical figure known as the Angel of Crimea.

That identity forms the basis of both her image and her healing Talent.

Various details in her words and behavior suggest that the current Nightingale is not the real one.

The true present-day Nightingale is not fully accounted for, but the story strongly implies that she is dead.

Information from Neumann II later reveals that this impostor is actually a Returner of Tamamo-no-Mae.

That revelation completely reframes her character, turning her from saintly healer to deceptive infiltrator.

She has also manifested a Talent that allows her to manipulate flames.

It is implied that this power belonged to a missing boy who lived at the Sanatorium together with Albert.

According to Tesla, she can also cause crystals to erupt from the surrounding ground that “kill anything they touch.”

This makes her far more dangerous than her healer role first suggests.

**Talent: Angel of Healing**

This Talent allows her to heal the wounds of her allies.

Even major injuries can be treated, though it cannot bring the dead back to life.

**Talent: Crimson Shadow of Crimea**

Anyone healed by Angel of Healing can be made subordinate to her.

The speed and depth of this enslavement depend on the size of the wound and where it was located.

A small injury, such as a cut on a finger, can take years to fully turn someone into her servant.

If the victim has only recently been brainwashed, the control can be broken by cutting off the affected body part.

When a subordinated Returner is under her control, black flower petals drift from their neck.

This eerie visual sign gives her power one of the most unsettling images in the series.
