Character Setting

Edit

Tamako is the grandmother of Rinne Rokudo and the mother of Sabato Rokudo in the series Rin-ne. Despite being over 100 years old, she possesses a youthful appearance and is known as one of the most honored and skilled shinigami in the spirit world. Tamako has a complicated past, including falling in love with a man fated to reincarnate as a mackerel and extending his life to marry him, which led to her family inheriting her shinigami work quotas. She is warm and caring, especially to her grandson Rinne and Sakura Mamiya, and has played key roles in both of their lives. However, she adamantly dislikes being called "grandmother" or "aunt," showing a comedic side through her reactions. Tamako is a prominent figure with deep connections within the spirit world and maintains a large but chaotic mansion after her husband's passing.

Tamako presents herself in traditional Japanese attire, accentuated by her white hair and a red floral hair ornament.

Her eyes are usually closed in a narrow, smiling fashion, but she opens them only during serious moments.

Although her true age exceeds 100 years, her appearance remains strikingly young.

Tamako is cheerful and warm-hearted, often smiling and displaying a pleasant demeanor.

She is exceptionally sensitive about her age and any references to being called "aunt" or "grandmother."

Anyone who calls her such gets playfully "ground" on the temple—a running gag in the story.

Tamako prefers to be addressed as "big sister," and responds positively to compliments.

She balances a caring nature with a whimsical attitude, making her approachable but also unpredictable.

As one of the most outstanding shinigami, Tamako was awarded the title "Honorary Shinigami."

She defeated a nine-tailed fox 100 years ago and sent its soul for purification.

Tamako once served as an instructor at young shinigami training sessions.

Several decades ago, she fell in love with a man whose soul was destined to reincarnate as a mackerel in his next life.

By bending rules and extending his lifespan, she married him, on the condition that she take on ten times the usual workload as a shinigami and pass on any unfulfilled quotas to her descendants.

Although Tamako managed to fulfill her quota ten years ago, the financial struggles of her family are often (and jokingly) attributed to this "debt."

Tamako is a highly skilled shinigami, demonstrating exceptional combat abilities and supernatural talent.

She once single-handedly infiltrated the Damashinigami Company's base, showing her prowess.

Her spiritual strength enabled her to defeat a powerful fox spirit and maintain order within the shinigami world.

She previously used the "Coat of the Underworld," which is now worn by Rinne.

  • Rinne Rokudo: Her beloved grandson. Though she deeply cares for him, Tamako does not tolerate being called "grandmother" or being reminded of her age, even by Rinne.
  • Sabato Rokudo: Her son. Tamako usually takes a hands-off approach with Sabato and only disciplines him with a paper fan if necessary.
  • Sakura Mamiya: Tamako saved Sakura as a child from a Damashinigami and inadvertently turned her into a person who can see spirits by feeding her spirit world sweets.
  • Deceased Husband: After extending his lifespan and marrying him, Tamako now lives alone in a massive mansion in the shinigami world. She still treasures her memories with him.
  • Other Shinigami: She is highly respected among other veteran shinigami and often takes a mentor role at training events.

A Unique “Big Sister,” Not a "Grandmother"

Tamako is established as the beloved but hypersensitive grandmother of Rinne Rokudo. She detests being called "grandmother" or "aunt" and will gently punish anyone who tries—including Rinne—by pressing on their temples. Instead, Tamako enjoys being called "big sister," and her mood noticeably improves when flattered in this way.

Saving Sakura's Life

During Sakura Mamiya's childhood, Tamako rescued her from the hands of a Damashinigami. Accidentally, Tamako bought Sakura spirit-world candy, which granted Sakura the ability to see spirits—effectively setting her on her unique path in the story. Tamako thus plays the role of an unintentional matchmaker, linking Sakura and Rinne’s destinies.

The Extraordinary Love Story

Decades ago, Tamako encountered a man with only a minute left to live, whose soul was set to be reborn as a fish. Captivated by his gentle smile, Tamako bent the rules to extend his life by fifty years just so she could marry him. To make this possible, she accepted a contract requiring her to do ten times the regular shinigami work and to pass any unfinished workload to her descendants. This contributed to the "debt" narrative in Rinne's family, although Tamako herself met the quota before her husband's death.

Support and Guidance

Despite her eccentricities, Tamako is genuinely concerned for Rinne’s life and supports him by introducing spirit world jobs and offering help when needed. She respects Rinne’s autonomy and does not intervene excessively, allowing him to carve his own future.

Life After Loss

Now widowed, Tamako lives in a sprawling, cluttered mansion within the shinigami world. Despite being somewhat of a hoarder, she warmly welcomes visits from Rinne and Sakura, making them feel at home. Sakura enjoys a close, almost familial bond with Tamako, sharing moments like looking through Rinne’s photo album together.

  • Rinne’s "Coat of the Underworld" originally belonged to Tamako.
  • Tamako is regarded as the mental pillar of the Damashinigami group.
  • She holds a position of high authority, being recognized as an "Honorary Shinigami."
  • According to Rinne, Tamako is a classic example of someone who "can't tidy up," as her mansion is cluttered with misplaced furniture and belongings, though she claims that with such a big place, a few messy rooms do not matter.
  • For discipline, she usually uses a paper fan to punish Sabato.
  • She is known as a veteran who can easily navigate the complex shinigami realm on her own.

  • "Do not call me 'grandmother'!"
  • "Please, don't call me granny!!"
  • "If you ask Tamako, I’d rather be called 'big sister'! (grinds your temple)"
