Juuzou Suzuya

Juuzou Suzuya is physically small and slender for a male, with a height of 160 cm and a weight of 47 kg at age 19, rising to 48 kg at age 22. His AB blood type and 23.5 cm shoe size further highlight his ambiguous presence.

He has a delicate, androgynous face, messy hair, and visible stitch marks on his neck and right arm—remnants of his traumatic childhood. Juuzou secures his bangs with hairpins shaped like “XIII,” further setting him apart. His youthful look barely changes despite his aging; he often wears clothing and accessories that appear childlike or unconventional.

Juuzou is a blend of childlike innocence and chilling cruelty. He often speaks in an endearing yet peculiar tone, adding “~” or “yo~” at the end of sentences. Lacking a traditional sense of morality, he displays extreme playfulness and even sadism, yet can still be deeply loyal and attached to those important to him.

His strong sense of curiosity, mischievousness, and disregard for his own safety make him both entertaining and dangerous. Over time, however, his sense of responsibility and ability to care for others develop remarkably.

As a child, Juuzou was kidnapped and raised by Big Madam, a ghoul who used him as a “pet” and “replacement daughter.” His birth name is “Rei,” but Big Madam called him “Juuzou,” a name he kept.

Enduring years of torture and psychological manipulation, he suffered mutilation, including the destruction of his male genitalia to maintain his “cuteness.” The trauma dulled his pain receptors and fractured his psyche, at one point developing symptoms of dissociation.

Eventually abandoned by Big Madam, Juuzou was taken in by the CCG, but struggled socially and morally. He was framed for animal cruelty and remained isolated among academy candidates until Tsuneyoshi Washuu intervened, granting him formal investigator status. He found a new purpose and name – Juuzou Suzuya – upon partnering with Yukinori Shinohara.

Juuzou is a combat prodigy, boasting unparalleled physical skills and dynamic vision. He swiftly dispatched three ghouls—dismembering them into over 200 pieces using a single quinque knife—and effortlessly defeated dangerous enemies like Yakumo Oomori, also known as Jason, even when they were grievously wounded.

He has astonishing pain tolerance and creativity in combat. Among his armaments:

• Scorpion 1/56 (oukaku, Rate B): A set of 56 small knife-shaped quinques given by Shinohara.
• 13’s Jason (rinkaku, Rate S+): A massive scythe quinque derived from Jason, equipped with a blade that deploys kagune.
• Arata (JOKER): A custom Arata armor made from Arata Kirishima's kagune, designed for Juuzou’s slim build, with arms that transform into blades.

While not quite on the level of Kishou Arima, his power is near inhuman, as shown in battles against multiple formidable adversaries.

Early Days: Life as Big Madam’s “Pet”

As a child, Juuzou was forced into the role of Big Madam’s prized possession and made to live as her “daughter.” He endured physical and psychological torment meant to break and reshape him according to her whims. His only identity and value instead became tied to violence and obedience.

Entrance and Life at the CCG

After being cast aside, Juuzou was taken in by the CCG, where he became a special case due to his inability to adopt common social norms or moral understanding. Disliked by others and subjected to false accusations, he faced isolation among his peers. Tsuneyoshi Washuu recognized his value and facilitated his formal entry, pairing him with Yukinori Shinohara, who helped him take on his chosen name.

Rising Through the Ranks

Juuzou quickly distinguished himself, first as a Third-Class Investigator, later becoming a First-Class “JOKER,” Associate Special Investigator, and finally Special Investigator by age 22.

Despite his oddities, his extraordinary track record in combat earned him numerous awards and increased trust and responsibility. At one point, he led his own squad, the Suzuya Squad, and adopted a more commanding role.

Tokyo Ghoul: JOKER

The spin-off manga “Tokyo Ghoul: JOKER” spotlights Juuzou’s days as a First-Class Investigator. With slightly altered appearance and demeanor, it focuses on his relationship with Hanbee Abara and his journey toward becoming a respected leader.

Tokyo Ghoul:re – Turning Point

As an Associate Special Investigator, Juuzou became the head of his own squad. After losing his right leg, he replaced it with a prosthetic capable of storing his Scorpion 1/56. He also returned the 3,000 yen he once stole from Ken Kaneki.

During the Nutcracker case, Juuzou cooperated closely with the Quinx Squad, infiltrating a human auction and ultimately defeating Big Madam—his abuser—personally, which propelled him to Special Investigator. In the Rushima Landing Operation, he led the Second Squad, subduing half-ghouls like Kurona Yasuhisa, and withstood severe injuries during the final conflict with Ken Kaneki in “dragon” form, but ensured his squad’s survival.

Post-War and Growth

After the conflict, Juuzou accepted Itsuki Marude’s proposal to cooperate with ghouls, marking a major evolution in his worldview.

He was appointed as the highest-ranking “Dragon General” of the new organization TSC and wept at the revival of his mentor, Yukinori Shinohara.
