Character Setting

Edit

Banken Man is an S-Class Rank 12 professional hero in One-Punch Man who patrols Q-City alone, wearing a dog costume and annihilating any monsters that enter his territory.

Banken Man is an S-Class Rank 12 hero, formerly Class C Rank 301.

He is a quiet man who always wears what appears to be a dog kigurumi suit, complete with ears and paws.

He is known for his extremely sharp sense of smell, comparable to that of a real dog.

Despite his rather cute mascot-like appearance, his combat style and presence are more reminiscent of a wild beast than of a human hero.

His hero activity is almost entirely restricted to Q-City, one of the most dangerous “disaster hot zones” with high monster frequency and threat levels.

Even so, he has single-handedly stabilized public safety there to the point that monster incidents virtually do not occur in the city anymore.

Because Q-City is so reliably protected, the Hero Association can divert other heroes and resources to different cities.

In the manga version illustrated by Yusuke Murata, residents of neighboring towns even flee to Q-City—rather than local shelters—trusting that being near Banken Man is safer.

Within Q-City, he is loved not only as a powerful hero but also as a local mascot and city symbol.

He typically stays in one specific spot, making him a “hero you can go meet,” and his presence has helped drive up local land prices.

Despite this popularity, he refuses to give autographs as a matter of personal principle.

His overwhelming strength, together with that of Metal Bat, was one of the key reasons the S-Class system itself was established.

He did not participate in the direct assault on the Monster Association, largely because he does not leave his self-imposed jurisdiction of Q-City.

Phoenix Man, however, took notice of Banken Man’s refusal to curry favor with the Hero Association, believing he had the potential to “become a costumed monster along with Child Emperor,” showing that even monsters recognize his independent, uncompromising personality.

In the anime adaptation, his voice actor is Yuji Ueda.

Banken Man is extremely laconic and rarely speaks.

He tends to sit or lie in one location within Q-City, calmly awaiting the appearance of monsters.

His refusal to sign autographs highlights a certain stubborn, no-nonsense attitude toward fame and hero celebrity culture.

He seems to care less about recognition and more about protecting his territory in his own way.

To civilians, he is oddly approachable as a visual presence—he looks like a big dog mascot—but his aura in battle is terrifying, even to other fighters.

Garou, after facing him, went so far as to say that Banken Man felt like “a different kind of creature from humans.”

He shows no interest in impressing the Hero Association or advancing his own status.

This independent streak is precisely what caught Phoenix Man’s attention, who admired the way Banken Man does not flatter or cater to the Association.

Banken Man possesses extraordinary physical abilities that place him firmly in the upper ranks of S-Class.

He combines explosive speed, monstrous strength, and razor-sharp instincts in close combat.

Senses and Awareness

His sense of smell is emphasized as being as keen as that of a real dog.

This heightened olfactory sense allows him to detect monsters and potential threats within his city with exceptional reliability.

He has an outstanding ability to recognize monster incursions and react before they can cause large-scale damage.

His perfect record at suppressing monster disasters in Q-City shows his sharp situational awareness and tactical judgment.

Combat Style

Banken Man fights using a four-legged stance, running and attacking on all fours like a quadrupedal predator.

He leverages this posture for powerful leaps, agile dashes, and sudden close-range assaults.

His fighting style is extremely aggressive and predatory.

Even as he tears through groups of monsters, he maintains a blank, emotionless expression, which makes him look more like a wild animal methodically hunting than a human hero “fighting.”

In Murata’s manga, he is shown turning a group of Monster Association underlings into a heap of mangled corpses in moments.

After slaughtering them, he calmly sits atop the pile of bodies in a pose that visually evokes a lion ruling over its domain.

Despite his ferocity, he remains eerily composed, as if monster extermination is routine for him.

This combination of brutality and calm makes him uniquely intimidating, even among S-Class heroes.

Strength and Speed

Banken Man’s raw power and speed are so high that they exceeded Garou’s expectations by a wide margin.

Garou later listed “far greater power and speed than expected” as one of his main reasons for losing to Banken Man.

His strength is demonstrated in the original webcomic by ripping off the head of a giant demon-level monster with his bare hands.

Even this brief feat already marked him as someone whose physical might is far beyond that of typical heroes.

In later scenes, he effortlessly tears through monster hordes that had previously overwhelmed other strong heroes.

His attacks land with such force and frequency that opponents have almost no time to respond or counter.

Matchup Against Garou

One of Banken Man’s most notable achievements is his overwhelming victory over pre-awakening Garou.

At this point, Garou had already defeated Tanktop Master (along with his followers) and had even overpowered Metal Bat, albeit a wounded one—he was on a serious winning streak.

When Garou entered Q-City, Banken Man engaged him and completely dominated the fight.

Garou himself described the experience as being beaten “one-sidedly.”

Garou attempted to use his trump card technique at the time, Water Stream Rock Smashing Fist, against Banken Man.

However, even that advanced martial art could not overcome Banken Man’s sheer speed, power, and unorthodox four-legged movements.

Banken Man even deliberately responded to Garou’s attacks by performing “paw” motions—like offering a dog’s paw—showing that he had enough spare capacity to toy with him mid-fight.

This casual mockery underlined the enormous gap between their abilities at that time.

After fleeing Q-City, Garou analyzed his defeat and identified three main causes.

First, Banken Man’s power and speed were far greater than Garou had predicted.

Second, Garou’s fighting style was optimized for human opponents, making it poorly suited to handle someone who fought on all fours with beast-like movement patterns.

Third, Garou realized he lacked experience fighting non-human or non-humanoid opponents, which left him unable to adapt effectively.

Importantly, Garou did not escape by winning or outmaneuvering Banken Man.

Banken Man simply stopped pursuing him once Garou had left Q-City, suggesting that as long as intruders leave his territory, he has no further interest in chasing them down.

Territory Focus: Q-City

Banken Man’s activity is intentionally limited to Q-City, and the reason for this self-imposed restriction is unknown.

He almost never leaves this area and did not join the large-scale raid on the Monster Association’s base elsewhere.

In exchange for this narrow operating range, he has built a near-perfect record within his city.

Any monster that appears in Q-City is effectively guaranteed to be eliminated by him.

This hyper-focused territorial defense turns Q-City into one of the safest places to be during monster disasters, despite its classification as a high-risk zone.

Citizens and even neighboring residents treat Q-City as a de facto safe haven, running toward it in times of crisis rather than away from it.

His commitment to his “domain” reinforces his image as a guard dog watching over his yard.

He does not chase prestige or broader missions; he simply ensures that nothing threatens Q-City while he is there.

Among heroes, Banken Man is recognized as “abnormally strong,” even by S-Class standards.

His performance, alongside Metal Bat’s, helped convince the Hero Association to formally establish the S-Class as a special tier for exceptional combat power.

Within Q-City, he functions as both protector and mascot.

Children and adults alike see him sitting in his usual spot and feel reassured, as if a loyal guard dog is always on watch.

At the same time, fellow fighters like Garou view him as something almost inhuman, a pure predator who just happens to be on the side of the Hero Association.

His quiet, unsocial demeanor and refusal to participate in hero politics give him an air of independence and mystery.

Phoenix Man admired his refusal to flatter the Hero Association bureaucracy.

He even judged that Banken Man had the “potential” to join Child Emperor in becoming a costumed monster, suggesting that even monsters see in him a kindred, uncompromising spirit—albeit one who chose a different path.

Overall, Banken Man stands out as a hero who blurs the line between man, beast, and monster.

He looks like a mascot, fights like a wild animal, and quietly upholds one of the safest cities in the world purely through his presence.
