Character Setting

Edit

Gilles de L'Enfer is a recurring, charismatic "hell boy" antagonist from the Hell Girl series, known for his overwhelming psychic powers, chilling past, and unrelenting rivalry with Ai Enma.

Gilles de L'Enfer is a strikingly beautiful boy with blond hair and vivid green eyes.

He has a delicate, almost ethereal appearance, fitting his sinister aura.

After his return in the Pachinko storyline, he hides a scar on his right eye with a mask.

His visual motif leans toward the "pretty yet deadly" archetype, blending innocence with malevolence.

Gilles is proud, ruthless, and cold-hearted, carrying a high sense of superiority due to his natural abilities.

He exhibits little remorse for his actions, including violently murdering his own parents.

Driven by an unshakable will and pride, he refuses to yield, even after repeated defeats.

His arrogance and disregard for others allow him to manipulate and challenge even supernatural figures like Ai Enma.

Gilles is a naturally gifted psychic, able to show people their fears and pasts or manipulate objects with his mind.

His parents, terrified of his powers, attempted to kill him.

Surviving this trauma, he retaliated by slaying his entire family, then went on to kill teachers and other adults at his school.

He claims to have returned from Hell itself through his own power, cementing his "Hell Boy" moniker.

The name "Gilles de L'Enfer" is French, meaning “Gilles of Hell,” hinting both at his origin and thematic ties.

Gilles possesses overwhelming psychic abilities.

He can project hallucinations of fear and the past onto others.

He wields telekinesis with terrifying ease, restraining or harming multiple opponents at once.

These abilities allow him to fight on equal footing with the supernatural team surrounding Ai Enma, even temporarily overpowering them.

Notably, his psychic skills are so advanced he claims they enabled his escape from Hell.

Ai Enma (Hell Girl): Exists as his direct rival. He fixates on defeating her, viewing their conflict as a game or challenge. Ai, however, shows little interest in him beyond professional detachment.

Hone Onna and Ren Ichimoku: Subordinates of Ai Enma who are quickly neutralized by Gilles' powers during their first confrontation.

Esper Watanabe: A supposed psychic whom Gilles manipulates in a televised contest.

Aki Abe: An assistant director who becomes entangled in Gilles’s schemes, later seeking revenge for the damage he caused to her career and life, and ultimately responsible for sending him to Hell a second time.

His voice actor is Jun Fukuyama.

He first appears in "Hell Girl" season one, episode 20 ("Hell Girl vs. Hell Boy") as a guest antagonist and target.

His name, "Gilles de L'Enfer," directly translates as "Gilles of Hell" in French, matching his thematic role.

He is the rare antagonist who is not only aware of the supernatural world but can also challenge its denizens head-on.

His character is referenced in spinoff formats, including a fighting game in the manga version and a pachinko machine storyline.

He becomes the first to threaten repeated returns from Hell, treating death as a temporary setback.

"No matter how many times I fall into Hell, I’ll return and settle things!"

"Again... Hell, huh."

"Would you like to die once?" (mimicking Ai Enma’s signature line)

"Which will it be? Become my bride... or be sent to Hell?"

"Never coming back, huh...?"

Hell Girl Season 1 – Episode 20: "Hell Girl vs. Hell Boy"

Gilles enters the human world, seeking a confrontation with Ai Enma.

He manipulates Esper Watanabe for a staged psychic battle, challenging Ai directly and overpowering her companions with ease.

Gilles uses his abilities to immobilize Ren Ichimoku and Hone Onna instantly, then captures Ai Enma, forcing her into a red gothic dress and even burning her at the stake.

Ai survives his brutal assault completely unharmed, revealing his attacks were in vain as she admits she was "lost in thought."

Gilles expects victory, convinced that nobody would dare pull the string to send him to Hell—but, out of fear, Watanabe does exactly that.

Dragged to Hell, Gilles vows vengeance, screaming that he will always return.

Pachinko "Hell Girl 4" – "Sequel: Hell Girl vs. Hell Boy"

Fifteen years after his defeat, Gilles returns, now with a masked scar.

He confronts Ai again, this time transforming her into a bride and forcing her to choose—become his wife or be sent to Hell.

Ai uncompromisingly rejects both options, causing Gilles to snap.

When he attempts to drag her to Hell by force, Aki Abe appears with a straw doll, seeking revenge on Gilles for destroying her career and life.

Unable to stop Abe’s determination, Gilles is sent to Hell once more, promising to return again.

Even Ai ponders that Gilles might someday emerge once more.

In the manga’s fighting game spinoff, Gilles appears as a formidable character.

He is a rare character in the series to explicitly state that he can escape Hell, reinforcing his unique status.

Both the cast and audience recognize his episodes for their intensity and unorthodox plot twists.

Ai Enma herself remarks on his potential return, unlike her attitude toward almost all other antagonists.
