Tenza is one of the Yamada Asaemon executioners, ranked tenth in the Trial First Style, and is known for his fiery temperament and straightforward fighting spirit.

Although officially a ronin executioner, he is often seen wearing two swords, emphasizing his martial background and eagerness for combat.

Assigned as the monitor of the “mountain folk” criminal Nurugai, Tenza travels to the mysterious island in search of the Elixir of Life.

He was taken in at a young age by Shion, who recognized his potential and trained him as a direct disciple.

Tenza is a classic hot-blooded sports-type youth whose speech habit is to end sentences with a casual, upbeat tone.

He is impulsive and acts before thinking, which even he and others frankly describe as being a “simple-minded idiot.”

Despite his lack of strategic thinking, Tenza has an honest and open heart and respects anyone smarter than him, even if they are younger.

His emotional honesty allows him to acknowledge others’ strengths without jealousy, which earns him quiet respect in return.

Unlike most Yamada Asaemon, who pride themselves on separating duty from personal feelings, Tenza is deeply driven by human compassion and personal justice.

He values “doing what he himself can accept as right,” and struggles with orders that contradict his own sense of morality.

This sense of justice is what pushes him to volunteer as Nurugai’s monitor, unable to accept that a nameless child with vaguely defined charges is simply branded a heinous criminal and executed.

He offers Nurugai a sliver of hope, urging them to live on and seize any chance at survival rather than resign themselves to death.

To Shion and Nurugai, Tenza’s straightforward optimism and refusal to wallow in despair become a real emotional balm.

Even on the deadly island, his bright, stubbornly positive attitude keeps the people around him from mentally collapsing.

Tenza has a lean but athletic build befitting his age and training, standing 176 cm tall.

His image color is red, underscoring his fiery qi nature and passionate temperament.

On the island, he wears his blond hair swept back and held in place by a headband.

This headband later becomes an important memento after his death.

While most Yamada Asaemon are usually depicted as disciplined, stoic swordsmen, Tenza visually and behaviorally stands out as more casual and energetic.

His two-sword carry and relaxed demeanor give him a slightly rowdier image than his more reserved colleagues.

Though his official seat is relatively low, Tenza possesses exceptional speed in his sword draw and follow-through.

His rapid swings allow him to respond to the island’s monstrous threats without falling behind, proving he is no mere novice.

He combines this speed with notable physical strength.

Tenza can shatter a human skull with a single punch, showing that his raw power is dangerous even without a blade.

Tenza’s signature technique is an ultimate move called “Shinotsuku Ame” (Drumming Rain).

This move unleashes a flurry of high-speed consecutive slashes, overwhelming enemies in a storm-like barrage of attacks.

Despite his talents, his fighting style initially relies heavily on straightforward aggression and repetition.

This predictability later becomes a serious weakness when faced with a highly intelligent, adaptive enemy who can read and counter his technique.

Before joining the Yamada family, Tenza lived as a rough delinquent, spending his days in street fights and petty violence.

He was seen as a dangerous troublemaker with no real future, drifting at the margins of society.

At around age 12, he was discovered by Shion, who recognized a spark of potential hidden beneath Tenza’s aggression and aimlessness.

Shion brought him into the Yamada household, offering structure, training, and a real path in life.

Tenza initially rebelled against both Shion and the Yamada family, resistant to authority and discipline.

However, his inherently straightforward and honest nature gradually led him to accept guidance and to mature.

Over time, he transformed from a violent street brat into a polite and earnest young man.

He developed strong loyalty to Shion, whom he respectfully calls “sensei” (teacher), and he cherishes the chance at a new life that Shion gave him.

Their meeting and early training years are detailed in the spin-off novel “Dreams Like Bubbles,” in the fourth chapter titled “Garden of Blooming Cherry Blossoms.”

This chapter explores Tenza’s past as a homeless child and his emotional turning point when Shion extended a hand to him, and it is adapted in episode 8 of the first anime season.

Shion is Tenza’s direct master and the person who completely altered the course of his life.

Tenza reveres him, not just as a teacher of swordsmanship, but as a savior who saw worth in him when no one else did.

Tenza’s entire sense of duty is built around not betraying Shion’s faith and effort.

He wants to become someone who can stand proudly as Shion’s disciple and possibly one day guide others as Shion guided him.

Their relationship is not coldly hierarchical; it feels more like a stubborn but earnest son and a strict yet caring father.

Tenza’s desire to protect both Shion and the ideals Shion instilled in him is central to his decisions on the island.

After Tenza’s death, Shion is temporarily consumed by vengeful hatred against the heavenly being who killed him.

He throws himself into reckless combat, seeming ready to die just to avenge Tenza.

Nurugai later tells Shion that, in his final moments, Tenza wore an expression of relief as he watched Shion and Nurugai escape.

This revelation frees Shion from blind revenge, letting him understand that Tenza did not die in misery but with the satisfaction of having protected his loved ones.

Nurugai is a young member of a persecuted mountain community, condemned as a criminal primarily for their origin.

Tenza is assigned to monitor Nurugai, officially as an executioner escorting a death-row prisoner.

From the beginning, Tenza is troubled by the idea of a child with unclear crimes being executed as an irredeemable villain.

His conscience compels him to bend the rigid rules and to present Nurugai with the possibility of survival instead.

Initially, Tenza mistakes Nurugai for a boy and calls them “Nurugai-kun.”

Later, after they wash off blood on the shore and Tenza sees Nurugai’s true body, he realizes Nurugai is a girl and respectfully switches to addressing her as “Nurugai-san.”

Tenza urges Nurugai to live on, telling her that she has potential and a future, unlike the dead-end path he once walked.

Nurugai, moved by his character and sacrifice, later goes so far as to propose to him, telling Tenza to “come be my husband.”

Although this future never comes to pass because of his death, Nurugai’s feelings and Tenza’s influence remain powerful.

Tenza’s words and actions become a driving force behind Nurugai’s determination to survive and grow.

Initial Actions and Escape Attempt

Upon arrival on the island known as the Divine Hermit’s Paradise, Tenza and Nurugai initially focus less on the elixir and more on simply escaping alive.

They are overwhelmed by the bizarre, lethal flora and creatures that populate the land.

At one point, Tenza attempts an escape from the island with Nurugai, using an abandoned vessel and the sea currents.

However, they are attacked near a “graveyard of shipwrecks” by a mysterious mass of tentacles, forcing them back into the island’s deadly ecosystem.

After a series of near-fatal encounters, Tenza and Nurugai barely manage to survive.

They ultimately return to the island proper, shifting their focus back to the original mission of seeking the Elixir of Life.

Realization About Nurugai and Growing Bond

During their travels, Tenza’s discovery of Nurugai’s true gender reshapes his perspective and behavior.

His switch from casual boyish address to more respectful speech subtly reflects how seriously he now takes her as a person to protect and cherish.

Their hardships on the island deepen their mutual trust.

Tenza’s relentless optimism and protective instincts contrast with Nurugai’s traumatic past but gradually coax Nurugai toward hope.

Their relationship evolves from guard and prisoner into something more like comrades, siblings, and potentially future partners.

This emotional development makes the later tragedy of Tenza’s death especially impactful.

Encounter with the Heavenly Being

While searching for sea currents that might carry them and Nurugai home, Tenza and Nurugai become aware of unusual commotion in the forest.

Drawn out to the shoreline, they encounter a powerful heavenly being named Zhujin, one of the immortal guardians of the island.

Realizing the overwhelming gap in power, Tenza manages a fighting retreat into the forest with Nurugai.

Along the way, they reunite with Shion, who provides crucial support and helps them escape immediate annihilation.

Shion, however, reprimands Tenza for protecting a criminal and letting personal feelings override his official duty.

In a desperate emotional plea, Tenza defends Nurugai, insisting that she deserves a chance at life and is not the monster her sentence makes her out to be.

Shion eventually agrees to suspend judgment on Nurugai’s fate.

Almost immediately afterward, Zhujin ambushes them, slashing Shion’s neck and leaving him gravely wounded.

With Shion badly injured and Nurugai in mortal danger, the situation becomes dire.

Tenza, realizing that Shion’s fighting ability is severely compromised, chooses to face Zhujin alone despite the obvious risk.

At first he attacks with his usual sword techniques, including his “Drumming Rain” barrage of slashes.

However, Zhujin quickly analyzes and adapts to Tenza’s style, reading his patterns and completely nullifying his offense.

Zhujin then pierces Tenza’s throat and chest in a cross-shaped pattern using supernatural power, delivering what should be a fatal blow.

Tenza is left on the brink of death, his voice nearly destroyed and his body failing him.

Even so, when he sees Nurugai and Shion preparing to stand and fight alongside him, he forces himself back to his feet.

Understanding that they will both die if they stay, Tenza decides to buy time for their escape, accepting his own death as the price.

He throws himself bare-handed at Zhujin, fighting with punches and desperation rather than refined technique.

With his crushed throat, he can barely speak, but he uses what little voice remains to stop Shion from coming back to help.

Shion realizes from this gesture and Tenza’s expression exactly what his disciple intends.

He chooses to honor Tenza’s will, takes Nurugai, and retreats, leaving Tenza to hold Zhujin back alone.

Tenza continues to batter Zhujin with everything he has until his body can no longer move.

He dies young, but with the knowledge that the people dearest to him escaped because of his sacrifice.

In his final moments, Tenza recalls Shion once telling him, “You have potential.”

Back then, Tenza depended on that phrase as a distant promise that he might grow into someone better.

As he slips toward death, he quietly wonders, “What kind of possibilities did I have?”

His mind then floods with vivid images of futures that will never come to pass.

He sees himself becoming like Shion, taking on disciples of his own and guiding younger generations with the same firm kindness he received.

He also imagines a future where he survives the island, and he and a grown, mature Nurugai stand together at a wedding ceremony, celebrating their union.

These dreamlike visions encapsulate the life Tenza could have had if fate had been kinder.

They give emotional weight to his death, emphasizing that he did not only lose the present moment, but an entire unwritten future.

Although Tenza dies relatively early in the story, he remains a fan favorite, ranking high in popularity polls.

Readers and viewers are drawn to his straightforward warmth, unshakable loyalty, and heartbreaking but heroic end.

The headband he always wore does not vanish with him.

During the second wave of arrivals on the island, the ninja from the Iwagakure village conducting reconnaissance find and recover this headband.

The item eventually ends up in the hands of Shugen Yamada Asaemon, who keeps it as a precious keepsake in his clothing.

Later, during battle, the headband is destroyed, but in doing so it protects Shugen’s life, acting as a symbolic guardian even after Tenza’s death.

Meanwhile, Shion’s grief initially transforms into an all-consuming thirst for revenge against the heavenly beings, particularly Zhujin.

He throws himself into suicidal attacks, clearly prioritizing vengeance over survival.

Nurugai, however, tells Shion what she saw at the end: Tenza smiling with relief as he watched Shion and Nurugai escape.

She explains that he did not die cursing his enemies, but at peace with the choice he made.

These words free Shion from the cage of vengeance and allow him to truly honor Tenza’s sacrifice.

Choosing life instead of a pointless death, Shion resolves to survive and carry forward the will of his fallen disciple.

In this way, Tenza’s life, though brief, has far-reaching effects.

His kindness, bravery, and final decision protect his comrades, shape their future choices, and continue to save lives even after he is gone.
