Character Setting

Edit

Reg is a boy-shaped robot and co-protagonist of Made in Abyss, discovered inactive within the Abyss and taken in by Riko. He has no memory of his origin and is believed to have come from the deeper layers, journeying to the bottom to learn who he is and protect Riko.

Reg is picked up by trainee cave raider Riko while dormant and brought to the orphanage in Orth.

He adopts the name “Reg,” the same as a dog Riko once kept, and begins traveling with her toward the Abyss’s depths.

He does not suffer the Abyss’s Curse (ascending burden) because he is a robot.

He wields superhuman strength, extendable arms that can reach over 40 meters, and a devastating beam called the Incinerator.

To save Riko from a Crimson Splitjaw, Reg fires the Incinerator and then falls into a coma.

After Riko revives him with an electric shock at the orphanage, he awakens without his prior memories.

Hints suggest he spent time with Lyza before his memory loss.

His speech and the catchphrase “Incomprehensible” mirror Lyza’s mannerisms, implying her influence.

In Layer 5 at the Idofront, Reg is captured by Bondrewd and loses his right arm to Bondrewd’s “Light that Returns to the Core” (Sparagmos).

In Layer 6 he meets Faputa, who reveals they once knew each other and that he used the name “Reg” even then.

Reg looks like a human boy with brown short hair, golden eyes, and slightly darker skin than Riko’s.

He has a navel, pointed ear tips, and square red-brown markings on his cheeks and flanks whose purpose is unknown.

His torso resembles human flesh while his limbs are sleek metal with silver bellows at joints and black-iron cylinders for forearms and shins.

His palms and soles have lens-like discs that leave cat-paw-like footprints, and his helmet displays a symbol that appears to track energy reserves.

Despite his mechanical build, he breathes, blinks, sweats, and can shed tears, with pain perception similar to a human’s.

He has taste and smell, can eat and later urinate, and his skin feels subtly different from human skin to the touch.

The torso is extremely durable and resists blades and heat, and his internal organs are constructed to resemble human ones.

When heavily damaged at the Idofront, blood-like fluid was seen, and his body exhibits rapid healing over time.

Reg typically goes shirtless, wearing loose patterned trousers, a large metal collar, a red mantle, and a horned helmet.

The helmet seems linked to his systems, and its front window shows an energy-like sigil that depletes after firing the Incinerator.

Reg is earnest, pure-hearted, and straightforward, but he is also a scaredy-cat and tearful under overwhelming stress.

He believes in ghosts and the occult, which Nat often teases him for, and he can be easily duped, leading Nanachi to call him a pushover.

He uses the exclamation “Incomprehensible” when confronted with bizarre behavior or phenomena, sometimes including his own.

His tone is more adult than his appearance suggests, likely influenced by time spent with Lyza.

He loves soft, fluffy textures and is particularly fond of Nanachi’s fur.

He tries hard to protect Riko and will act recklessly when her safety is at stake.

Reg is poor at cooking and once ruined a carcass by bursting the viscera while cleaning it.

He often serves as first contact during expeditions due to his durability, which leads to him being battered with sad regularity.

Basic Performance

Reg is likely an Abyssal “Overd”-class relic given his extraordinary capabilities.

He boasts tremendous grip strength, can leap several times his height, and easily supports his own weight plus Riko’s.

His five senses are acute, including telescoping vision, fine hearing capable of catching whispers, and scent-tracking.

He can scout freely because he is unaffected by the Curse, but he is sometimes careless compared to Riko and Nanachi.

Both arms can launch at high speed and extend roughly 40 meters via cable thicker than a handful.

Ouzen observes the cable’s strength seems to come from overlapping the same space multiple times, hinting at nonstandard spatial properties.

The arms retract with speed, move like living whips, coil into spirals for wall-running, and can spread as a sensory lattice around camp.

Even when severed, a detached arm retains sensation and power, and the Incinerator can be fired remotely through it.

After losing his right arm to Bondrewd, Reg later attaches the “Universal Key-Opener” (Gentle Knock) from a black whistle corpse as a prosthetic.

He regains dual-arm function via this connection while retaining his unusual spatial traits.

His energy source is unknown, though he eats and later expels waste like a human.

Riko suspects food or electricity, while Bondrewd posits he absorbs “conceptual energy,” potentially allowing nearly any energetic input to power him.

The helmet symbol only visibly decreases after Incinerator use, which Nanachi thinks indicates the cannon drains a separate, larger pool.

He recharged extensively at the Idofront, but excessive input caused a dangerous “overload” episode.

During overload he felt as if multiple personalities competed for control of his body while his core self remained present.

It is suspected that his initial memory loss might be tied to electrical shock or similar overload effects.

Incinerator

Reg fires a destructive ray from the lenses in his palms and soles that leaves heat-like traces yet disintegrates targets “as if they unravel.”

It bypasses regeneration and immortality, harming entities like Mitty that normally cannot be permanently damaged.

He can control output, from human-head-thin beams to several-meter columns, or form a spherical area that disappears without collateral.

When saving Riko from the Crimson Splitjaw, he pierced multiple fossilized trunks to hit the target at long range.

A single high-power shot can consume base-level energy supplies, and he can chain shots within ten minutes if reserves allow.

Ten minutes after firing, Reg collapses and remains unconscious for two hours, which leaves Riko vulnerable, so he saves it as a last resort.

Spoilers: White Reg

When Riko blows her white whistle, Reg’s body responds and awakens a new mode fans dub “White Reg.”

His helmet and arm casings turn white, his skin tone deepens, and glowing crack-like lines appear on the helmet lens.

Upon first awakening he instantly homed in on Riko’s location, saying, “Emotion, scenery, and thought flooded in; I knew at once you and Prushka called.”

This suggests he can sense a whistle’s owner and share some perception or feelings with them.

“Incomprehensible!”

“Leave it to me. Nanachi’s enemy is my enemy.”

Voice: Mariya Ise.

Speech is unusually mature for his youthful appearance, reflecting Lyza’s influence.

White Reg by Chirineko.

Reg by K-SUWABE.

Reg-kun by Fuji Fujino.

He often takes point against dangerous fauna due to his resilience, which leads to him being smashed or damaged with pitiable frequency.

His humanlike form extends to fluids such as sweat, tears, saliva, and nasal mucus, further emphasizing how “human” he seems despite being a robot.

His catchphrase “Incomprehensible” can be used negatively or, rarely, emphatically in a positive sense.

His fondness for fluffy textures makes Nanachi a frequent and very patient target of his curiosity.
