Matsugo

Matsugo is now considered an official "pretty boy," with refined features and a tall stature. He has a distinctive cross-shaped mark under his left eye, which sets him apart visually. While in elementary school, he was notably short and wore thick glasses, earning him nicknames like "mini glasses shorty." His appearance transformed greatly through effort as he grew older.

Matsugo is introverted and neurotic, often suffering from stomach aches in unfamiliar social situations. Although he tries to be earnest and well-mannered, he struggles with making friends. He is highly sensitive to loneliness and rejection, stemming from his isolated childhood. Despite appearing elite and confident on the outside, he remains emotionally delicate inside. His so-called friendship with Rinne borders on possessiveness and obsession, as he misinterprets their connection as something profound.

As a student at the prestigious Shinigami First High, Matsugo comes from a wealthy family. During his years at Shinigami Elementary, he was insecure due to his small stature and large glasses, which contributed to his unpopularity. Rinne often helped him out back then, leading Matsugo to feel indebted and attached. However, a misunderstanding during a school exercise led Matsugo to believe that he was betrayed by Rinne, resulting in years of estrangement.

Matsugo is a shinigami and, as such, has access to various supernatural tools.

He uses a contracted Black Cat named Kuromitsu as his partner.

Notable Shinigami Tool

• Pawn Pot: A mystical jar that can forcibly pawn an object by sucking it inside. It then outputs a cash value and a pawn ticket. The specifics of its effect remain a bit mysterious, as these items may simply be handed out by Kuromitsu rather than being a direct result of the tool itself.

• Rinne Rokudo: Once his savior and friend during elementary school, Rinne is now the object of Matsugo’s intense admiration—even obsession. Although Matsugo himself insists it is pure friendship and desires to deepen their bond to make up for lost time, his actions suggest a possessiveness that worries those around him. Rinne, on his part, finds the attention overwhelming and wishes Matsugo would keep some distance.
• Sakura Mamiya: Rinne’s close friend, whom Matsugo sees as a rival. Matsugo secretly feels jealous of Sakura’s presence near Rinne.
• Tsubasa Jumonji & Ageha: Both are suspicious of Matsugo’s true intentions and often joke that his feelings for Rinne are not purely platonic.
• Anju: Matsugo is oblivious to Anju's crush on him and shows no interest in her, remaining blind to her feelings.

Misunderstood Friendship

Matsugo and Rinne were classmates in Shinigami Elementary School. Matsugo, being small and bullied, relied on Rinne for support and came to admire him deeply. However, during a school training session, an incident led Matsugo to wrongly believe Rinne betrayed him. This misunderstanding severed their friendship, and Matsugo grew up isolated.

Reuniting at the Alumni Reunion

Five years later, at a Shinigami Elementary School reunion, Matsugo and Rinne meet again. The old misunderstanding is cleared up, leading Matsugo to reattach himself to Rinne, determined to compensate for their lost years as friends. He becomes overly enthusiastic, pursuing Rinne and displaying behaviors—such as giving him surveillance gadgets, hugging him, and even fantasizing about marrying him in dreams—that alarm Rinne’s friends and make Rinne himself wish for space.

Ongoing Dynamics

Despite his improvement in appearance and social standing, Matsugo remains friendless and continues to hover around Rinne as if rekindling their childhood bond could fill the void in his life. His fixation sometimes creates awkward moments for Rinne and tensions with those close to him, especially Sakura Mamiya.
