Character Setting

Edit

Aiden Field is a fictional character from the anime series Violet Evergarden, appearing as the central focus of Episode 11, where he is portrayed as a young soldier whose final wish is to send letters to his loved ones.

Aiden Field is a new recruit serving in the army of the country Crittogal, which is engulfed in a civil war.

He becomes a client of the C.H Postal Company, asking for help to write a letter to his lover back home.

He is deeply in love with his childhood friend Maria, who remains in their hometown while he is deployed.

Despite being inexperienced and frightened by war, Aiden shows strong emotional courage in his last moments.

His story centers on the themes of love, regret, and the desire to communicate true feelings before death.

Through Aiden, the series explores the emotional weight carried by soldiers and those waiting for them at home.

Aiden appears exclusively in Episode 11 of the Violet Evergarden anime.

He is introduced as a young soldier stationed at Menace Base in the war-torn country of Crittogal.

While still alive at the front, he reaches out to the C.H Postal Company to request a ghostwriting service.

He wants a letter written to his lover Maria, since he struggles to express his feelings properly in writing.

Claudia Hodgins, the president of the company, hesitates to accept the request at first.

Because Aiden is stationed directly in a combat zone, Claudia temporarily puts the request on hold for safety reasons.

The one who becomes most involved with Aiden’s request is Violet Evergarden, an Auto Memory Doll.

Violet overhears the conversation outside the president’s office and personally travels to the war zone when the opportunity arises.

Aiden is depicted as earnest, sensitive, and somewhat timid, especially for a soldier.

He is easily shaken by the deaths of his comrades, yet his love and concern for his parents and Maria are unwavering.

He does not show the hardened mindset of a veteran; instead, he reacts like a normal young man thrown into war too early.

This vulnerability makes his final decisions—to think of others, to send comforting words—deeply moving.

Even in his last moments, Aiden is more worried about how his death will affect his parents and Maria than about his own pain.

His sincerity, regret, and desire to protect their hearts define his characterization.

Deployment and Mission

Aiden is drafted as a new soldier in Crittogal’s army during an ongoing civil conflict.

The war takes place after a larger continental war has ended, with anti-government rebel forces refusing to accept the peace.

Aiden’s unit is formed mostly of young, inexperienced recruits like himself.

They are ordered into the mountains to search for the remnants of the anti-government forces.

Their opponents, however, are not raw recruits.

The rebels are composed of seasoned, battle-hardened soldiers who know the terrain and the tactics of war.

Ambush and Defeat

During their mission in the mountains, Aiden’s squad is suddenly ambushed by the rebel forces.

The new recruits are completely outmatched and are quickly shot down one after another.

Aiden survives the initial onslaught, but he is terrified by the violent deaths of his comrades.

Overwhelmed by fear and shock, he tries to escape the battlefield.

As he flees, the rebels do not allow him to get away.

He is shot from behind, and the bullet passes through his chest, leaving him with a fatal wound.

Just as the rebels move in to finish him off where he lies wounded, Violet Evergarden arrives from the sky.

She descends from a biplane, drives the rebels away, and rescues Aiden at the very last moment.

Shelter in the Mountain Cabin

Violet carries the severely wounded Aiden to a small cabin hidden deep in the mountains.

There, she tends to him as best she can, but it is clear that his injuries are beyond saving.

Realizing that he is close to death, Aiden no longer asks to be saved.

Instead, he gathers his remaining strength to entrust Violet with the most important task he has left.

He asks Violet to write letters in his place—one set to his parents, and one to his beloved Maria.

Knowing that she is an Auto Memory Doll, he believes she can properly convey his feelings.

Final Letters and Last Moments

In the cabin, Aiden recounts what he wants to say, and Violet carefully listens.

She uses her finger movements to memorize his words and later transcribes them exactly, preserving his emotions.

To his parents, Aiden expresses love, gratitude, and apology.

He thanks them for raising him, laments that he cannot return alive, and hopes they will keep living without being crushed by grief.

To Maria, Aiden finally puts into words the feelings he had never properly voiced while alive.

He confesses his love, apologizes for leaving her behind, and wishes for her future happiness even after his death.

As he speaks, his body weakens and his voice becomes faint, but he continues until the letters are complete.

Violet stays by his side, holding him in his final moments.

Aiden dies peacefully in the cabin, with Violet as the only witness to his last breath.

She “watches over” his passing, honoring his final wish to leave heartfelt words behind.

Aiden’s death deeply affects Violet.

She not only acts as a Doll writing his letters, but also as the one who failed to protect him on the battlefield.

When Violet later visits Aiden’s hometown, she delivers the letters to his parents and Maria.

For them, the letters are like Aiden himself returning home.

Aiden’s parents and Maria, moved to tears, thank Violet, saying they are grateful for “bringing Aiden back.”

To them, his words are proof that he was thinking of them to the very end.

Violet, however, feels profound guilt that she could not save his life.

She tearfully apologizes, saying she is sorry she could not protect him and that she allowed him to die.

Through Aiden’s story, Violet confronts the reality of death, the limits of her strength, and the emotional weight of the letters she writes.

His episode becomes one of the turning points in her growth, shaping her understanding of love, loss, and the meaning of carrying someone’s feelings into words.

Maria

Maria is Aiden’s childhood friend and the woman he loves.

She remains in their peaceful hometown while Aiden is sent to the front lines.

Aiden’s original request to the C.H Postal Company is to have a letter written to Maria.

He wants to express his feelings properly, but his deployment and the chaos of war interrupt this plan.

In his final letters, he confesses his love directly, something he could never do before.

He also asks her to live on, to find happiness, and not let his death shackle her life.

When Violet delivers the letter, Maria is devastated yet grateful.

Aiden’s words console her by proving that she was always in his heart.

Aiden’s Parents

Aiden also deeply cares for his mother and father, who live in his hometown.

He worries about the pain they will feel upon learning of his death.

In his letter to them, he thanks them for everything they have done.

He apologizes for not being able to come home alive and asks them to keep living without drowning in sorrow.

When they receive the letter from Violet, they feel as if their son has finally returned.

They thank Violet for bringing Aiden “back,” accepting his words as his final farewell.

In the anime adaptation of Violet Evergarden, Aiden Field is voiced by Shintaro Asanuma.

His performance captures Aiden’s fear, tenderness, and emotional sincerity in his last moments.
