Prince Hata is a prince from the planet Oukoku and a recurring character in Gintama. He loves all kinds of strange and curious creatures, not just cute pets, and is often called the “Stupid Prince” by others because of his many problems. Despite his pride as an alien, his actions are usually funny and lead to him being laughed at by humans as well. He often brings weird monsters as pets to Earth, causing trouble again and again. While he sometimes thinks of never visiting Earth again after these problems, he always comes back. Even though people tease him, Prince Hata has a gentle side and dislikes violence.
Prince Hata is short, standing at 152 cm tall and weighing 80 kg.
His most unique feature is a pair of antennas on his head, called Chidanneksuko.
The antennas are his charm point—they are easy to pull off, but grow back soon after.
Prince Hata is often childish, naive, and very curious about creatures, especially the unusual ones.
He calls himself “yo,” an old-fashioned royal way of saying “I.”
He is very fond of strange aliens and monsters, even if others find them gross or scary.
Although he seems proud as an alien and looks down on humans, his clumsy behavior makes him a joke to both aliens and humans.
He actually cares about living things and shows a gentle, kind heart from time to time.
Prince Hata hates fighting and violence and sometimes criticizes it openly.
He can be jealous, too, especially when he feels someone else gets more attention and trust.
As the prince of Oukoku, Prince Hata has had a complex family life.
When he was younger, he was actually very good-looking and kind.
However, he felt left out because of his older brother Dragonia, and was disliked by the attendants of his other brother Valkas.
When he became king, he promised he would wait for his brother’s return someday.
Prince Hata is not a fighter or warrior, but he is very smart when it comes to animals and living things.
He is sometimes invited as a guest on creature-related TV shows because of his deep knowledge about animals and rare monsters.
Prince Hata is often seen with Taizou Hasegawa, sharing many mishaps together.
He works alongside his servant, Ji, who helps him with his pets and royal duties.
He has troubled relationships with his brothers, Dragonia and Valkas, due to family rivalry.
Trouble on Earth
Prince Hata often brings odd and sometimes dangerous pets to Earth.
These pets, whether giant insects or crazy monsters, almost always cause chaos among the humans.
Although he tries to act sorry, Prince Hata quickly forgets his promise to behave and comes back, causing new problems each time.
Kindness and Nonviolence
Prince Hata sometimes shows courage and kindness, even if he does not mean to at first.
For example, in the “Star-Sea Monk Arc,” Prince Hata (and his servant Ji) are forced by Shinpachi Shimura and friends to help rescue Kagura, who is trapped by an alien that swallowed Gintoki Sakata.
He sacrifices himself by trying to buy time but is ignored because someone else’s daughter is a higher priority.
The Silver Soul Arc
Prince Hata finally reunites with his older brother and chooses to help save Earth.
However, he is stopped by Taizou Hasegawa, who asks him to follow his plan to protect the planet.
3-Z Class Ginpachi-sensei
In the “3-Z Class Ginpachi-sensei” spin-off, Prince Hata appears as the principal of Gintama High School.
He is jealous of Ginpachi, the teacher, because the students trust Ginpachi more than him.
Prince Hata starts neglecting his duties because of this jealousy, leading to more school troubles.
Prince Hata’s antennas, called Chidanneksuko, are often pulled off, but always grow back.
He is frequently called the “Stupid Prince” by people around him.
Even though the original manga left him out for a long time, he still appears often in the anime, especially in original stories, opening, and ending scenes.
“I’ll never bring strange pets to Earth again... Probably.”
“Earthlings will never understand the charm of unique aliens.”
