When she undergoes hollowfication, a diamond-shaped mask with a cross pattern appears.

At first glance, she appears serious, but she actually likes erotic books (in the anime, swimsuit gravure books). She claims she is "not perverted, just very curious."

110 years ago, she was the vice-captain of the 8th Division of the Gotei 13 under Kyoraku, and she used to read books with Nanao on the first of every month. At that time, she wore a Shinigami uniform with a skirt.

101 years ago, on Kyoraku's recommendation, she was chosen as a member of the special task force to handle soul disappearance cases, replacing Tessai. She fought against hollowfied Kensei and others but was trapped in Aizen's scheme and became hollowfied.

During the Arrancar arc, she was the first to fight during Ichigo's internal struggle to control his hollowfication because it was her turn. During the decisive battle in Karakura Town, she joined the fight with other members. She fought alongside Hiyori against Harribel, but the fight was interrupted when Harribel was cut down by Aizen. After Ichigo returned to the real world, she hollowfied and challenged Aizen but was defeated.

After the battle with Aizen, she set up a book sales company based at Shiba Kuukaku's house and is running the business. She procures books (especially erotic books) and CDs from the real world and sells them in the Soul Society, receiving considerable support from male Shinigami and achieving significant sales. This business allows her to frequently visit the real world, where she continues to keep in touch with Hiyori and other remaining members of the real world.

In the Thousand-Year Blood War arc, she joined the "World Correction Squad" formed by Hiyori. Since this battle, her hairstyle has changed to a ponytail. Later, she joined the Shinigami to create a gate. After the gate was completed, they advanced to the Royal Palace but were defeated by Gerard.

After the war, with the death of former Captain-General Yamamoto, Kyoraku, her former superior, became the new Captain-General, and she was appointed as the captain of the now-vacant 8th Division, returning to the Gotei 13. In the novel version, she reunited with Nanao, and at the library, she met with Hinamori to discuss selecting her division's vice-captain, but due to many rejections, it was decided that Nanao would temporarily act as the vice-captain while also serving as the vice-captain of the 1st Division.

Twelve years after the Thousand-Year Blood War arc, a new vice-captain named Hachihachihara Kumayu was appointed.
