Character Setting

Edit

Masaki Taniguchi is the stepbrother of Nagi Kirima and stands out as a warm, caring boy who always thinks of others before himself. Even though he was first shown only briefly, he later becomes a main character with strong ties to many important figures, as well as dangerous organizations. His fate is deeply connected to the mysterious events and key characters in the Boogiepop stories.

Masaki Taniguchi is described as someone with a good-looking face.

His attractive appearance often draws attention and concern from his family.

Masaki is friendly, gentle, and treats everyone kindly with no prejudice.

He is easy to get close to and is always polite.

His older sister, Nagi Kirima, worries that because of his looks and open nature, he might grow up to be a ladies' man.

Masaki always puts other people's safety ahead of his own.

He jumps in to help others without thinking about the risks, which sometimes puts him in danger.

Masaki Taniguchi is the stepbrother of Nagi Kirima, becoming family when his father married Nagi's mother.

He grew up overseas and is considered a returnee to Japan.

He is trained in martial arts by Gen Sakakibara, the same teacher as Nagi Kirima.

Masaki is also very close to Takashi Takashiro, who looks up to Gen Sakakibara.

He lives in a dormitory, which makes meeting his girlfriend Aya Orihata a bit difficult.

He has a strong, loving relationship with Aya Orihata, and they talk on the phone every day.

He gets along well with Kazuko Suema, who is Nagi Kirima's close friend.

Masaki respects and shares a bond like brothers with Takashi Takashiro, a fellow student of Gen Sakakibara.

He has also met many major characters, including Boogiepop, Suiko Minahoshi, Nagi Kirima, Fortezzimo, and the two witches.

This makes him unique, as very few people have directly met so many important figures.

Trained in martial arts, Masaki can defend himself and others.

After being revived by Takashi Takashiro, Masaki gains a special power: he can "see" the image of "death."

The details of this power are still a mystery.

Early Appearances and Character Setup

At first, Masaki shows up only for a short time in Boogiepop and Others.

Later, he takes a lead role in other stories like VS Imaginator and Alternative Ego Uprising.

Connection with Other Characters

He stands out for the number of important people he meets.

He is the last person to be recognized by Suiko Minahoshi.

Even after many people close to Nagi Kirima are removed from the main story by the witch’s curse, Masaki is the only one left near the center of all the events.

The Embryo Incident

At the end of the Embryo Erosion / Flames Arc, Masaki is brought back to life by Takashi Takashiro.

This recovery gives him new life energy and lets him "break through" like the Embryo’s gift.

His special power awakens, allowing him to recognize "death" itself as an image.

Witch War and Fate

During Walpurgis' Regret, Masaki gets caught up in the "Witch War."

He becomes linked with the witches and the Towa Organization's fate.

His relationship with Aya Orihata faces distance, so he decides to talk with her about it again.

After the witch's fate pushes away everyone close to Nagi Kirima, Masaki is the only one who stays near the heart of the events.

In the end, when Nagi Kirima’s soul tries to return, it is Masaki's heart, as her "family," that calls her back.

Confronting the Towa Organization

In Alternative Ego Uprising, Masaki and Aya Orihata finally confront the Towa Organization together.

He faces the troubles that began during the Witch War and deals with his relationship with Aya Orihata.

Thanks to his experience with many events, he can overcome the Organization's tricks and helps resolve the problem.

Afterward, even though Aya Orihata returns to the Organization, Masaki keeps his relationship with her and continues to interact with the Organization, but from a special place as an ordinary person.

Unique Status

Boogiepop calls him "a person not worth killing."

On the other hand, one villain describes Masaki as someone who "will never die," "has a different nature from normal people," and "survives because he has something special."

  • He is one of the only non-main characters to meet so many important figures face-to-face.
  • Unlike most, he stays involved at the center of the story even when others are forced away.
