Character Setting

Edit

Magical Ruby is a mischievous, sentient magical staff created by Zelretch, famous for her unpredictable antics and obsession with transforming girls into magical heroines.

Magical Ruby takes the form of a pink, winged staff with a gem at its tip, designed to evoke the image of a classic magical girl wand.

Despite her shape as a staff, she is surprisingly agile, able to perform various physical "moves" and manipulate her body in creative ways.

Ruby is a joyfully sadistic, chatty, and self-proclaimed "magical equipment of love and justice".

She lives to tease, torment, and toy with her master, often disregarding their thoughts, dignity, or personal boundaries.

Her ideal master, she admits brazenly, is a girl under the age of twelve, and she seeks opportunities to transform as many as possible into magical girls.

She rarely shows real empathy, but occasionally offers dry observation and advice, sometimes acting wiser than she seems.

Ruby was crafted by the legendary mage Kishua Zelretch Schweinorg as one of a pair of magical staffs called the Kaleid Sticks.

Her initial appearance was in "Fate/hollow ataraxia", where she forcibly transformed Rin Tohsaka into "Kaleido Ruby", a magical girl, overriding her will and inhibitions.

Her true nature as an artificial natural spirit came to light when even her creator added functions to prevent Ruby from becoming too dangerous, such as a "leaking inner voice" feature that stops her from lying.

Across the Fate universe and related multiverses, Ruby is infamous for her relentless efforts to turn every heroine into a magical girl, regardless of their temperament, age, or desires.

Magical Ruby can supply her master with unlimited magical energy, allowing them to perform powerful spells and transformations.

She enables "Prism Trans" (multiverse download), letting her master access skills from parallel selves.

When her master transforms, she constantly bestows magic shields, physical protection, accelerated healing, and enhanced physical abilities.

However, if Ruby is separated from her master for longer than 30 seconds or by more than 50 meters, the magic transformation ends.

Ruby cannot attack by herself; she must be wielded by her master to perform magical blasts or strikes.

To make a contract, Ruby requires blood authentication, physical contact, and—sometimes—what she calls "pure-hearted love energy".

Her inner mechanisms include 24 secret functions, such as stick-to-stick telecommunication, fortune telling, and information sharing.

She’s surprisingly combat-capable, practicing a unique martial art with techniques like "Ruby Thumb Gouge" and "Ruby Flick", using her stick body to inflict real harm.

Her voice can be modulated, and she’s unashamed to take on bizarre disguises, such as a hose reel or water nozzle.

Magical Sapphire

Her sister staff, with a calm, serious personality that contrasts Ruby's chaotic nature.

Illyasviel von Einzbern

Her current master and frequent victim of her pranks and magical mischief.

Rin Tohsaka

Her former master, whom she treats as little more than a plaything.

Kishua Zelretch Schweinorg

Her creator and the only one who truly understands Ruby’s nature.

Shirou Emiya

Illyasviel's adoptive brother, repeatedly embarrassed and inconvenienced by Ruby’s antics.

Ruby’s core joy is "tormenting the master", a trait she freely admits.

She persistently attempts to transform every prominent heroine—even historical or mature figures—into magical girls.

In one whimsical event, she tried to turn Taiga Fujimura into a magical girl, only for the universe itself to censor the result.

Her fortune-telling mode is surprisingly accurate, though her advice is always wrapped in playful mockery.

She is notorious for causing embarrassing and questionable situations, like exposing Shirou Emiya in the bath or commenting on the unlikelihood of Kirei Kotomine’s innocence.

In crossover and spin-off series, her transformations range from adorable to outright disturbing, especially when she ventures outside her "ideal master" age bracket.

"Yay! I’ve caught myself a loli!"

"Isn’t it obvious? Anyone who defies me is obviously the villain!"

"You might never get another chance to fight yourself! Don’t you realize how precious this is?!"

Origin

Magical Ruby first appeared in "Fate/hollow ataraxia", crash-landing into Rin Tohsaka’s life and forcibly transforming her into a magical heroine, regardless of Rin's embarrassment or reluctance.

Her reckless behavior led Zelretch to add a truth-forcing feature, making Ruby incapable of lying when her magic is activated.

Prisma☆Illya Era

Once Rin’s misery ended, Ruby wormed her way into the hands of Illyasviel von Einzbern in "Fate/kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya".

With characteristic forcefulness, she made a contract with Illya and began supplying her with powerful magic—along with a steady stream of problems and humiliation.

Ruby's obsession with creating more magical girls becomes a running gag, sometimes targeting other girls, and even threatening the dignity of grown women.

She demonstrates unexpected wisdom as an observer, especially in tense moments, but her dedication to chaos never falters.

Prism☆Fantasm and Crossovers

Ruby participates in various spinoffs and alternate universes, tirelessly seeking new candidates for magical girl transformation, sometimes with comically disastrous results.

Magical Ruby shares thematic similarities with other magical staffs, especially in their powers and personalities, but is distinguished by her gleeful disregard for social conventions and her nearly indestructible optimism.

She is referenced in fan works, parodies, and mashups, sometimes even transforming into bizarre items or granting magic to unrelated characters.

Her voice actresses, Naoko Takano and Jouji Nakata (in drama CDs), are chosen for their ability to capture Ruby’s manic energy and sarcastic humor.
