Kushige manifests as a dignified, slightly stooped older man with long white hair and a white beard, giving him the air of a calm, scholarly elder.

His human form reflects the size and presence of his original vessel, a large cosmetic chest used in bridal furnishings.

Although he can speak, it is rare for anyone to actually hear his voice.

He talks very quietly and sparsely, which adds to his mysterious, reserved presence.

Despite his quiet nature, he is gentle and deeply affectionate toward those he protects.

He carries himself with the composed demeanor of an old guardian who has watched over his household for many years.

Kushige is one of the bridal trousseau tsukumogami who dwell in the same mansion as Botan Nagatsuki.

Among this group, he stands out both for his imposing size and for his role as a long-standing protector.

When Botan was still very young, Kushige often became her main playmate.

During times when the other bridal trousseau tsukumogami were away on duty, he stayed behind and kept her company, watching over her with quiet patience.

This early bond made Kushige especially close to Botan, not just as a guardian but almost as a kindly grandfather figure.

His presence provided comfort and stability in the large, often quiet mansion.

Kushige’s defining ability is the creation and maintenance of powerful spiritual barriers.

He constantly surrounds both Botan and the mansion they live in with strong protective wards.

These barriers shield Botan’s body and mind from spiritual harm, malice, and intrusions.

At the same time, they protect the estate from outside threats, making the entire property a fortified sanctuary.

Maintaining such extensive wards consumes nearly all of Kushige’s power.

Because of this, he normally cannot participate in duties that require active combat or the sealing of other tsukumogami.

Despite this limitation, his defensive abilities are considered crucial, as they form the first and strongest line of protection for Botan and the household.

His role is less about frontline battles and more about unseen, constant safeguarding.

At one point, the mansion comes under attack by a hostile umbrella tsukumogami.

During this assault, Kushige is nearly destroyed along with his vessel.

To avoid total annihilation, Kushige takes drastic action and seals his soul within the core of his cosmetic chest.

This emergency sealing allows him to survive the attack but at a steep cost.

While in this sealed state, Kushige can no longer spread protective barriers over Botan and the mansion as he once did.

The extensive warding he maintained before the attack disappears, leaving both girl and home more vulnerable.

His absence from his usual defensive role marks a dangerous period for the household.

Without his wide-area protection, others must compensate for the loss of his overwhelming defensive power.

After the defeat of the group associated with the Gagaku Bureau, Kushige’s reconstruction is completed.

His vessel is restored, and he fully revives, regaining his consciousness and presence.

Upon his return, Kushige makes an important adjustment to how he uses his power.

Instead of maintaining massive barriers around both Botan and the entire mansion, he focuses his protection solely on Botan herself.

This narrower scope significantly reduces the strain on his spiritual energy.

Because less power is needed to maintain the new, more limited barrier, Kushige finally has surplus strength.

With this regained capacity, Kushige is now able to take part directly in battles.

He can fight alongside the other tsukumogami while still maintaining a strong protective ward around Botan.

His shift from purely defensive support to a mixed role of protector and combatant makes him far more active in conflicts.

Even in battle, however, his priorities remain the same: Botan’s safety comes first, and every action he takes reflects that unwavering dedication.
