Tōma

Tōma was originally summoned to another world alongside Setsu Suzaki during the first summoning. Together, they tried to stop the devastating war that was ravaging the land. At first, Tōma was just like anyone else—an average person unwittingly caught up in a conflict far beyond his imagination. The horrors of war, however, slowly corrupted his nature.

While participating in the war, Tōma began to lose his sense of humanity. He even ignored the surrender of the demon race and killed indiscriminately, all signs of his growing instability. The breaking point came during an invasion of a temple, where he heard the voice of Creacil from a pendant worshipped by demons. Manipulated by Creacil, Tōma’s obsession for Setsu erupted into something violent and uncontrollable, transforming his personality entirely.

Obsession defines Tōma’s actions. Once caring, now he is dominated by jealousy and a need to control Setsu. His love is strong but warped, resulting in deadly consequences for countless innocents. Tōma will stop at nothing to achieve his dream of keeping Setsu to himself, even if it means destroying entire races.

In the anime version, Tōma’s role shifts. He becomes the mastermind lurking behind the scenes, directly influencing key events. After the war is over, Tōma attacks Setsu, becoming the reason for Setsu's reincarnation. In the final battle, Setsu destroys the pendant along with Tōma, ending his reign of terror. With the pendant shattered, Tōma returns to his senses and seeks redemption. He uses up all his magical power to send his classmates back to the real world as penance, reverting himself to a powerless human.

Setsu Suzaki: Tōma’s primary obsession, someone he once fought beside with genuine camaraderie. Over time, his feelings warped into a possessive and destructive force.

Creacil: The manipulative entity from the pendant. Creacil’s voice pushes Tōma towards his darkest impulses.

After being freed from Creacil’s control, Tōma is left only with regret. He sacrifices all his magic to undo a small part of the harm he caused, proving that a flicker of his old self remained until the end. Quietly and without power, Tōma steps away from the spotlight, marked forever by his choices and losses.

Tōma’s story is a vivid example of how love and trauma can reshape a person. He’s memorable not only for his role as a formidable ex-hero but also for the tragedy of what he became. His tale warns of how even the most ordinary among us can be changed by extraordinary circumstances—sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse.
