Character Setting

Edit

Marshall Gorilla is a tiger-level monster and member of the Monster Association who appears only in the Murata-illustrated version of One-Punch Man, known for his military attire, banana-shaped cigar, and obsession with raising his disaster level to demon.

Marshall Gorilla is a gorilla-type humanoid monster aligned with the Monster Association.

His official disaster level is Tiger, indicating a threat capable of endangering a town.

True to his name, he dresses like a soldier, complete with combat gear and survival knives.

He styles himself as a close-quarters specialist, claiming to use a unique “Gorilla-Style Knife Technique.”

He is fixated on increasing his own disaster level ranking.

According to his own declaration, he plans to keep attacking A-Class heroes until he is acknowledged as Demon-level.

In the Murata manga, he is depicted smoking a banana-shaped cigar.

In the anime adaptation, this was altered to him eating an actual banana, in line with restrictions on smoking depictions.

Despite his arrogance, he is considered minor by top-level heroes.

Zombieman casually dismisses him as “just a small fry,” highlighting the brutal power gap between Tiger-level monsters and S-Class heroes.

Marshall Gorilla is extremely status-conscious and obsessed with ranks.

He takes the disaster level classification very seriously and sees it as a measure of his worth.

This obsession makes him actively hunt strong opponents, specifically A-Class heroes.

He believes that defeating multiple A-Class heroes will force the Hero Association to upgrade his disaster level to Demon.

He also has a twisted sense of “monster pride.”

When he sees a monster living peacefully among humans, he calls it a disgrace to monsterkind.

Despite his bravado, he lacks self-awareness about the true power scale of the world.

His decision to pick a fight with a far stronger foe directly leads to his quick and brutal death.

Marshall Gorilla specializes in close-range combat using survival knives.

He proudly refers to his technique as “Gorilla-Style Knife Technique.”

His primary weapon is a large survival knife, and he is skilled at slashing attacks and quick rushes.

He fights with surprising speed and aggression for his size, easily overwhelming lesser opponents.

His known finishing move is “Banana Slash.”

This technique is portrayed as a powerful, committed knife strike intended to cut down opponents in a single blow.

In terms of raw strength, he is strong enough to overpower sturdy A-Class heroes in a direct confrontation.

However, compared to monsters and fighters on the level of S-Class heroes, his power is still far below.

Marshall Gorilla is dispatched to City W as part of a Monster Association operation.

His personal goal there is to hunt down A-Class heroes to prove he deserves a higher disaster level.

While roaming City W, he eventually encounters the A-Class hero Heavy Kong.

Heavy Kong is known as one of the more durable and tough A-Class heroes, but Marshall Gorilla defeats him in a one-on-one fight with ease.

This victory places Marshall Gorilla among the stronger monsters involved in the City W assault.

From the perspective of the average hero, he is a serious threat and a genuine powerhouse.

However, this success inflates his ego and confidence.

After defeating Heavy Kong, he continues to wander around City W, looking for more strong opponents to take down.

While patrolling City W, Marshall Gorilla crosses paths with Armored Gorilla from the House of Evolution.

Armored Gorilla at this time is living quietly, having blended into human society.

Marshall Gorilla is disgusted by Armored Gorilla’s attempt to live peacefully among humans.

He calls him a “disgrace to monsters” and insists that a monster should behave like a monster, causing destruction and chaos.

Driven by this ideology and his hunger for recognition, he attacks Armored Gorilla with his knife.

He aims to prove his superiority and further cement his reputation.

However, his attacks have absolutely no effect on Armored Gorilla’s armor and body.

His survival knife even breaks against Armored Gorilla, showing a massive difference in physical resilience.

Armored Gorilla, who once fought on even terms with Genos—already possessing S-Class-level combat power before officially joining the heroes—barely recognizes Marshall Gorilla as a real threat.

In response to the attack, he lands a single punch that completely shatters Marshall Gorilla’s facial bones.

Marshall Gorilla is killed instantly by this one strike.

His quest to rise from Tiger to Demon ends abruptly with a single blow, fittingly mirroring the brutal nature of the world he chose to live in.

Within the context of City W’s invasion, Marshall Gorilla stands out as one of the stronger invading monsters.

His effortless victory over Heavy Kong demonstrates that he is above the average Tiger-level threat.

Among A-Class heroes, only a few would be able to handle him comfortably.

Most would find him a difficult opponent due to his strength, toughness, and vicious close-combat style.

However, characters on the level of Genos or higher outclass him by a huge margin.

Zombieman’s comment labeling him “a small fry” highlights how S-Class heroes view him as negligible.

His death at the hands of Armored Gorilla further illustrates this gap.

Even though they share a gorilla motif, their actual combat tiers are worlds apart, with Armored Gorilla operating near S-Class level and Marshall Gorilla stuck at solid but unspectacular Tiger level.

Marshall Gorilla’s banana-shaped cigar visually reinforces his gorilla theme while parodying classic “tough soldier” tropes.

The anime’s switch from cigar to eating an actual banana keeps the gag while complying with restrictions on smoking imagery.

His obsession with disaster levels serves as a satire of characters who care more about titles and rankings than actual strength.

Ironically, this obsession pushes him into a fight that proves he was never close to Demon level in the first place.
