Character Setting

Edit

Linie is a minor antagonist in the manga and anime series *Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End*, serving as one of Aura the Guillotine’s direct subordinates and an executioner-class demon who specializes in magic detection and combat mimicry.

Linie is a demon girl who works under Aura the Guillotine as one of the “Headsman Officials,” a select group of executioner-like subordinates.

She appears as a quiet, emotionless girl with pink twin-tails and a gothic lolita-style outfit, giving her a deceptively cute and doll-like presence.

She is much more reserved than her fellow subordinate Draht and is comparatively obedient and loyal to Lügner.

Despite her childlike appearance, she is a dangerous combatant who relies on analysis and imitation rather than brute strength.

Linie has a particular fondness for apples.

In the spin-off novel *The Wandering Scales*, she even eats a half-eaten apple that Aura casually tossed onto the floor, underlining her simple but slightly eerie attachment to this favorite food.

In the first official popularity poll held from September 21 to October 5, 2022, Linie ranked 34th among 100 characters.

In the second poll held after the anime adaptation, she made a huge leap to 6th place, a remarkably strong showing for a “somewhat strong enemy” who appears only briefly in the main story.

Her Japanese voice actress in the anime is Mainaka Iwami.

Linie is soft-spoken, calm, and usually expressionless, which makes her feel more eerie than overtly menacing.

She does not display the boisterous arrogance common among many demons, but she still shares their fundamental tendency to underestimate humans.

Compared to the impulsive Draht, Linie listens to Lügner and follows his instructions with minimal resistance.

Her loyalty is more practical than emotional; she respects hierarchy and competence.

Like many demons, she has a quiet yet ingrained sense of superiority over humans.

This leads her to misjudge opponents and overlook her own shortcomings, especially in terms of physical power and endurance.

Even when her attacks are clearly failing to overwhelm Stark, she initially shows no visible agitation.

She plays the cool, confident imitator, insisting that her “copy” is sufficient to finish the job, right up until she is fatally outplayed.

Magic Detection

Linie is highly skilled at detecting and tracking magical power.

She can sense the presence, absence, and movement of mana over a distance, making her a valuable scout and early warning system for Aura’s group.

At one point, she reports to Lügner that she can no longer detect Draht’s magic, revealing Draht’s death before anyone sees the body.

This ability allows her to act as a sensor during battles, relaying critical information to her superiors.

Copying Magic “Erfahrsen”

Linie’s signature magic is a mimicry-type spell known as the copying magic “Erfahrsen.”

This technique lets her record the flow of magic inside a person’s body while they are moving and then reproduce those same movements herself.

By mapping and memorizing the internal mana circulation tied to someone’s actions, she can recreate their combat style, speed, and techniques with impressive fidelity.

This means that once she has observed a powerful warrior in action, she can mimic their fighting style as if she had trained in it herself.

However, what she copies is strictly “movement” and technique: things like form, speed, and timing.

She cannot replicate the target’s physical strength, durability, or overall body toughness, because her own body remains that of a small, lightly built girl.

This limitation becomes crucial when she imitates Eisen’s techniques against Stark.

She can perform the same moves with similar sharpness and speed, but the attacks lack Eisen’s tremendous weight and destructive force.

Weapon Generation

As part of her combat style, Linie can generate various weapons from thin air.

This allows her to instantly arm herself with tools that match the techniques she is copying.

In the manga, she is shown creating a battle axe and a broadsword.

In the anime, this is expanded to include additional weapons such as a spear and throwing knives.

It is unclear whether this weapon generation is a component of her copying magic or a separate ability she learned to better support it.

Either way, it gives her flexibility and lets her seamlessly switch between weapon types depending on the technique she is reproducing.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Linie excels at turning observed information into immediate combat power.

Once she has seen a fighter in action, she can rapidly become a dangerous mirror of their abilities.

Her talent in magic detection also makes her excellent in reconnaissance and battlefield control.

She can track allies and enemies, identify casualties, and detect approaching threats.

However, her biggest weakness is physical.

She does not have the raw power, stamina, or toughness of top-class warriors or physically reinforced demons.

Because she has rarely been pushed to her limits, Linie does not fully understand these shortcomings.

Her overconfidence in her mimicry makes her prone to misjudging both her own capacity and the true danger posed by her opponents.

This blind spot is a classic demon flaw in the series: arrogance rooted in incomplete understanding of humans.

She pays the ultimate price for this when she underestimates Stark’s resolve and endurance.

Under Aura the Guillotine

Linie is introduced as one of Aura the Guillotine’s executioner subordinates, operating as part of the group known as the “Headsman Officials.”

She works alongside Lügner and Draht during Aura’s confrontation with Frieren’s party.

Using her magic detection, she informs Lügner that Draht’s magical presence has disappeared, indicating his death.

At this stage, she casually assumes Draht must have died because he dropped his guard, downplaying the threat that defeated him.

Lügner admonishes her for this casual attitude.

He warns her not to underestimate the enemy, highlighting the difference in their levels of caution.

Battle Against Stark

While Lügner pursues Fern, Linie is tasked with confronting Stark.

The fight reveals both the impressive sophistication and critical limits of her combat style.

Linie had previously witnessed Eisen in battle and considered him the strongest warrior she had ever seen.

Armed with this memory, she uses her copying magic to reproduce Eisen’s techniques against Eisen’s own disciple, Stark.

She mimics Eisen’s movements with remarkable accuracy, using generated weapons and precise timing to pressure Stark.

At first, Stark is surprised and even shaken by seeing his master’s techniques used against him.

However, as the fight progresses, Stark realizes that something is off.

The attacks, while accurate in form, lack the crushing power and heavy impact that Eisen’s strikes possess.

Stark understands that Linie is only copying the “outer shell” of Eisen’s strength.

Her body cannot deliver the same level of destructive force, no matter how perfect the movement looks.

Linie, still composed, brushes off Stark’s criticism as mere bravado.

When Stark calls her imitation “just a cheap copy,” she confidently retorts that she will finish him with that copy.

The battle drags on longer than she expected, and her frustration begins to surface.

Yet her fundamental miscalculation remains: she continues to assume that her copied techniques are enough to kill Stark outright.

Stark decides to take a desperate but calculated risk.

He deliberately chooses to receive what Linie intends as a finishing blow, absorbing it with his own body—specifically bracing his abdominal muscles to endure the impact.

Her attack, lacking Eisen’s true destructive power, fails to break him.

In that opening, Stark delivers his own massive vertical slash, the technique known as “Flash Heaven Slash,” with full force.

Linie is unable to withstand this decisive strike.

She is cut down and killed, her overconfidence and reliance on imitation ultimately leading to her defeat.

Linie’s childish appearance, twin-tails, and gothic lolita fashion quickly grabbed the attention of readers and viewers.

The contrast between her cute design and her cold, executioner-like role created a strong visual and emotional impact.

In the first “100 Character Popularity Poll,” she placed 34th, outperforming several other demons, including Lügner at 50th and Draht at 92nd.

In the second poll, held after the anime adaptation, she soared to 6th place, showing how strongly she resonated with fans despite her limited screen time.

Unlike some characters who become pure “joke” figures, Linie maintained the image of a “reasonably strong enemy” throughout.

Her blend of cool-headed mimicry, eerie cuteness, and tragic overconfidence made her a memorable part of Aura’s arc.
