As the lord of the Hikone Domain, he was once passionately driven by ideals of creating a new era. He rose smoothly through the ranks and became a close aide to Yoshinobu Tokugawa. However, after the assassination attempt against Yoshinobu, he swore unwavering loyalty to him. In his childhood, his younger brother fell from a cliff and went missing, an event that haunts his past.
In the anime adaptation, while he struggles with Yoshinobu Tokugawa often sneaking out of the castle, he ultimately treats him with indulgence. Additionally, the reason for his contract with the Tokugawa vengeful spirit differs between versions: in the game, it is said he sought power to protect Yoshinobu Tokugawa, whereas in the anime, he made the contract for the sake of the Tokugawa family.
