Character Setting

Edit

Uraume is a male sorcerer from a thousand years ago in Jujutsu Kaisen, a curse user allied with Kenjaku and the utterly devoted attendant and personal chef of Sukuna Ryoumen.

Uraume is a special-grade-level curse user who collaborates with Kenjaku while secretly serving Sukuna Ryoumen’s resurrection and return.

He originates from the Heian era, the same age as Sukuna Ryoumen, and has since been incarnated into the modern era.

He was originally a human sorcerer whose cursed technique rampaged in childhood, killing his parents.

Sukuna Ryoumen took an interest in his ice technique and cooking talent and took him in as a subordinate.

In the modern age, Uraume has incarnated into the body of a woman named Shiori Himi under a contract with Kenjaku.

Although his vessel is female, Uraume himself is canonically male.

He wields the ice-based cursed technique “Ice Formation Sorcery” and is skilled enough to restrain multiple first-grade sorcerers in an instant.

He also uses high-level reverse cursed techniques, making him extremely hard to kill.

Uraume joins Kenjaku’s plots, including attacking Jujutsu High during the Kyoto Goodwill Event and assisting with preparations in Shibuya.

After the Culling Game, he prepares Sukuna Ryoumen’s “Bathe” ritual to further sink Megumi Fushiguro’s soul.

In the final “Non-Human Realm Shinjuku Showdown,” he fights Hakari and, realizing Sukuna Ryoumen’s defeat is inevitable, freezes and shatters his own neck to commit suicide.

His voice actor in the anime adaptation is Mitsuki Saiga.

Uraume is outwardly calm, polite, and composed, speaking with a refined and respectful tone.

He consistently addresses Sukuna Ryoumen as “Lord Sukuna” and acts with clear awareness of his status as a subordinate.

Beneath this calm surface, he is actually intense and ruthless.

When enraged, he is ready to massacre everyone in sight, and he openly mocks Yuji Itadori for failing to stop Sukuna Ryoumen.

He is extremely loyal to Sukuna Ryoumen, to an extent very few characters in the series match.

Even though Sukuna Ryoumen rarely acknowledges others, he recognizes Uraume as capable and keeps him at his side.

Uraume’s role is surprisingly not “vice-commander” or “strategist” but “chef.”

Sukuna Ryoumen finds his greatest pleasure in eating (sometimes humans), and Uraume’s unique talent lies in cooking human flesh deliciously.

Because of this culinary talent, Uraume was “allowed” to stand beside Sukuna Ryoumen and serve him directly.

He watches over Sukuna Ryoumen’s body and vessels with possessive protectiveness, seeing Yuji Itadori only as “Sukuna Ryoumen’s new body.”

When Yuji forces his frozen body to move and escapes, Uraume is openly disgusted that Yuji would “force Sukuna Ryoumen’s body” like that.

Later, once Sukuna Ryoumen gains Megumi Fushiguro, Uraume tries to dispose of Yuji without hesitation.

Despite his severity, he occasionally serves as understated comic relief.

During his clash with Choso, he is on the receiving end of Choso’s now-famous “Move, I’m the big brother!” line.

Another comedic beat appears when Sukuna Ryoumen praises him for already having “the Bath” prepared.

There is no spoken reply, but the manga adds a small “super happy” note with an arrow pointing at Uraume to show his inner joy.

Alliance with Kenjaku

In the modern era, Uraume appears as one of the curse users cooperating with Kenjaku (then posing as Suguru Geto).

Their relationship is closer to an alliance than a strictly hierarchical master-servant bond.

He is trusted with important duties other curse users do not receive, such as checking commissioned veils and directing others on-site.

He accompanies Kenjaku during high-level negotiations with foreign leaders.

However, his true allegiance has always been to Sukuna Ryoumen.

Even while working with Kenjaku, his long-term goal is Sukuna Ryoumen’s complete return.

Attack on Jujutsu High

Around the time of the Kyoto Goodwill Event, Uraume secretly approaches Juzo Kumiya.

He offers Kumiya a deal and orders him to attack Jujutsu High during the event’s schedule.

This shows Uraume’s willingness to coordinate complex multi-party operations from the shadows.

He seldom acts on the front lines early on, but he is a central planner behind several major incidents.

Shibuya Incident and Reunion with Sukuna Ryoumen

During the Shibuya Incident, Uraume operates in the background alongside Kenjaku and the special-grade curses.

He eventually reunites with Sukuna Ryoumen once Sukuna takes control of Yuji Itadori’s body during the chaos.

Sukuna Ryoumen senses someone’s presence behind him and asks without turning, “Who’s there?”

Uraume answers that he has come to fetch his lord, and Sukuna Ryoumen immediately recognizes him just from his voice.

Notably, Uraume’s appearance in the present is almost identical to his Heian-era appearance, aside from hairstyle.

This suggests that in the current era he may be fully incarnated rather than partially manifesting.

During Shibuya, he freezes multiple sorcerers at once, demonstrating just how high his combat tier is.

He also begins preparing for Sukuna Ryoumen’s true revival, following the instructions his master gives him during their reunion.

“The Bath” and Megumi Fushiguro

After the Culling Game, Sukuna Ryoumen transfers from Yuji Itadori to Megumi Fushiguro’s body.

To submerge Megumi’s soul further and ensure firmer control, Sukuna Ryoumen requires a ritual known as “the Bath.”

Uraume is the one who prepares this ritual, which involves knowledge of curses, cursed objects, and special environmental conditions.

He combines his expertise in cursed energy and his understanding of curses themselves to carry out this complex procedure.

When Sukuna Ryoumen later hears that the Bath is already completed, he compliments Uraume for his foresight and efficiency.

This moment shows that Uraume not only follows orders but anticipates what Sukuna Ryoumen will need in advance.

Non-Human Realm Shinjuku Showdown

After the climactic battle between Sukuna Ryoumen and Satoru Gojo in Shinjuku, Uraume joins the battlefield.

He fights Kinji Hakari, demonstrating that his combat abilities stand toe-to-toe with one of the strongest modern sorcerers.

He uses massive ice constructs, ranged ice attacks, and powerful area-freezing techniques to keep up with Hakari.

Even when severely injured, he uses reverse cursed technique to return to the fight, reinforcing his durability.

When Sukuna Ryoumen finally loses, Uraume understands that his master’s defeat is final.

Refusing to live in a world where Sukuna Ryoumen has fallen, he freezes his own neck and shatters it, killing himself.

Overall Power

As a sorcerer from a thousand years ago, Uraume possesses overwhelming cursed energy and combat experience.

His techniques are on a different scale from most modern sorcerers, both in area of effect and raw output.

He can instantly incapacitate multiple first-grade sorcerers and fighter-level characters like Panda and Choso.

Moreover, he has mastered reverse cursed technique to the point of high-speed regeneration, making him exceptionally difficult to put down.

He also shows deep knowledge of curses and rituals, exemplified by preparing the Bath for Sukuna Ryoumen’s full awakening.

This combination of combat technique, regeneration, and ritual knowledge places him among the most dangerous non-Sukuna humans in the series.

Uraume’s innate technique allows him to manifest, control, and manipulate ice at high speed and large scale.

He freezes his surroundings and opponents with supercooled cursed energy, wielding both area denial and precise strikes.

He can create ice that even first-grade sorcerers cannot easily break or melt.

Yuji Itadori, despite his extraordinary physical strength, can only break through Uraume’s ice when Uraume intentionally weakens it.

Uraume effortlessly freezes Atsuya Kusakabe, Choso, Yuji Itadori, Panda, and Noritoshi Kamo, rendering them unable to act.

The binding strength of this ice is so high it effectively removes them from the fight when used at full power.

He can also form ice blades or “ice knives” on his fingertips to attack at close range.

His technique is extremely versatile, used for immobilization, offense, defense, and even long-distance delivery of objects.

For example, in the Shinjuku battle, he rides a giant ice mass from high in the sky and delivers the cursed tool “Kamuto-ke” encased inside it.

He can also create larger ice pillars and hurl them, or rain ice spikes from above as follow-up attacks on frozen targets.

Frost Wind

Frost Wind is Uraume’s signature large-scale attack using Ice Formation Sorcery.

He exhales onto his palm and releases a blast of supercooled cursed energy, instantly freezing a wide area and all targets within it.

This move represents the true essence of his technique, weaponizing overcooled cursed energy to lock enemies in ice.

At full output, Frost Wind is powerful enough to freeze and immobilize Maki Zenin even after her complete awakening through Heavenly Restriction.

In the Shinjuku battle, Uraume also uses Frost Wind tactically on a smaller scale.

He freezes Hakari’s right arm and then shatters it with a punch, combining debuff and physical strike.

Direct Drop

Direct Drop is a technique where Uraume generates a circular ice mass beneath his feet or around the ground.

In a wide radius, this ice surges up and freezes all targets in place, locking down movement.

After freezing them with Direct Drop, he often follows up by dropping countless ice spears from overhead.

This combination traps opponents in place and then subjects them to lethal area bombardment.

Uraume can use reverse cursed technique to generate positive energy by multiplying cursed energy.

This allows him to heal damage and regenerate lost body parts at high speed.

He is skilled enough to regenerate a severed finger instantly.

Even after being blasted by Satoru Gojo twice and being struck by Choso’s blood techniques, he returns to the fight using healing.

However, he is not completely omnipotent: he cannot immediately counter unfamiliar poisons on first exposure.

Choso’s blood contains a toxic property that Uraume cannot neutralize instantly the first time he encounters it.

Canon Gender

For a long time, the series left Uraume’s gender ambiguous.

Juzo Kumiya comments in the story that he cannot tell whether Uraume is male or female.

No direct statement is made in the main chapters clarifying this at first.

However, an extra page in volume 28 finally states canonically that Uraume is male.

Despite his androgynous appearance and female-coded vessel, Uraume himself is a man.

This clarification retroactively explains some subtle cues in earlier scenes.

For example, Satoru Gojo is not portrayed as someone who casually punches women in the series.

When he meets Uraume after being released from the Prison Realm, he punches Uraume hard in the chest without hesitation, which aligns more naturally with Uraume being male.

Vessel: Shiori Himi

Uraume’s modern body belongs to a woman named Shiori Himi.

This name is revealed through additional notes in volume 25 that were not in the original magazine release.

Under his contract with Kenjaku, Uraume incarnates into Shiori Himi’s body, despite their genders not matching.

This confirms that a cursed object and its vessel can have different genders and still achieve successful incarnation.

Shiori Himi’s last name contains the character “ice,” which thematically matches Uraume’s ice-based technique.

Uraume and Shiori Himi also strongly resemble each other in facial features.

This has led to the theory that Shiori Himi might be a descendant of Uraume himself.

Additional exhibition material states that Uraume preserved Sukuna Ryoumen’s corpse even after his lord’s death, implying Uraume lived long enough to potentially have descendants.

During his fight with Hakari, his chest appears wrapped, resembling bandages or cloth like a sarashi.

However, this is likely not about gender presentation but about bandaging wounds from when Satoru Gojo punched him.

It is unclear whether Uraume has altered Shiori Himi’s body shape using cursed techniques.

The story does not definitively state whether his physical form is purely that of Shiori Himi or somewhat modified by Uraume’s own soul.

Pre-Incarnation Appearance

In a flashback involving the sorcerer Yorozu (often translated as “Yorozu” or “Ten Thousand”), Uraume’s original, pre-incarnation body is shown.

His physique there is somewhat larger, with slightly shorter hair and a different outfit compared to his modern appearance.

This confirms that Uraume originally had a male body long before taking Shiori Himi as a vessel.

The similarity in facial features between that original body and Shiori Himi supports the descendant theory.

Possible Name and Motif Origins

The name “Uraume” is likely inspired by traditional Japanese motifs of plum blossoms.

One possibility is the “Uraume crest,” a specific variant of plum blossom family crests such as those used by Tenmangu shrines.

Another possible reference is “Uraume” as one of the layered color schemes for Heian-period garments called “kasane no irome.”

Both tie Uraume symbolically to plum blossoms and refined court aesthetics.

His motif may also draw from the “Flying Plum” legend, a story about a plum tree that flew to follow its master, the scholar Sugawara no Michizane.

This fits metaphorically with Uraume’s unwavering, almost supernatural loyalty to Sukuna Ryoumen.

Relationship with Sukuna Ryoumen

Canon materials and author comments describe Uraume straightforwardly as Sukuna Ryoumen’s subordinate.

He calls Sukuna Ryoumen “Lord” and behaves like a faithful vassal carrying out long-term plans over centuries.

However, the final chapter of the series and Uraume’s epilogue invite a deeper reading of their bond.

Even though they are not related by blood, their connection is depicted with almost familial weight, like a parent and child or older and younger siblings.

On the “soul pathway” after death, Sukuna Ryoumen appears in his same adult form.

Uraume, however, appears as a young boy, which could symbolize their relationship starting when Uraume was still a child taken in by Sukuna Ryoumen.

Volume 29 reveals that Yuji Itadori’s grandfather, Wasuke Itadori, is actually the reincarnation of one of Sukuna Ryoumen’s “halves.”

In other words, Wasuke and Sukuna Ryoumen share the same soul.

With the story beginning from Wasuke and Yuji’s relationship and ending on Sukuna Ryoumen and Uraume, a parallel is suggested.

Just as Wasuke and Yuji embody a father-son bond, Sukuna Ryoumen and Uraume are implied to share a similar “parent and child” type connection, despite not being biological relatives.

Uraume and the Question of Descendants

Only a few cursed object–vessel relationships in the series are fully explained, notably Sukuna RyoumenYuji Itadori.

Uraume and Shiori Himi are the second such pair where the relationship is explored in some detail.

Given their similar faces and Shiori Himi’s “ice” surname, many fans speculate that Shiori Himi is Uraume’s descendant.

The exhibition information that Uraume survived long after Sukuna Ryoumen’s death, guarding his corpse, reinforces the possibility that Uraume lived to an advanced age and could have had children.

If Shiori Himi is indeed his descendant, then Uraume ultimately incarnated into the body of one of his own bloodline.

This would neatly tie together the name, the ice motif, and the visual similarities.

Whether or not this is canonically confirmed, the narrative positioning of Uraume as both devoted subordinate and quasi-familial figure to Sukuna Ryoumen is clear.

He is one of the few people who stays by Sukuna Ryoumen’s side from ancient times to the very end of the story, and he chooses death the moment Sukuna Ryoumen falls.
