Max Lobo, born Max Glenreed, is a freelance journalist and former soldier and police officer who becomes a key ally and father figure to Ash Lynx.
Military Service
Max served in the United States Army as a member of the 7th Platoon, 3rd Unit of the Military Advisory Group during the Vietnam War.
There, he fought alongside Griffin, Ash's older brother, forging a bond as wartime comrades.
After the traumatic incident involving Griffin, the two never saw each other again.
Later Career
Following his military service, Max worked as a police officer for the New York City Police Department.
He later transitioned into a career as a freelance journalist before eventually becoming a contracted reporter for *Newsweek*.
Pursuing Banana Fish
Even before teaming up with Ash, Max was privately consumed by guilt and had been independently gathering information on the incident that shattered Griffin's life.
When Ash blames him for abandoning Griffin, it is clear the accusation stings deeply, as Max himself has long been haunted by the matter.
After meeting Ash in prison, the two join forces to investigate the mystery of Banana Fish.
Relationship with Ash
Max becomes a trusted confidant for Ash, treating him with a protective, paternal warmth.
He is one of the few people who can speak to Ash on equal footing and consistently offers him guidance and unwavering support throughout their dangerous mission.
Regarding his own writing, Ash once remarked that Max's columns are more interesting than his reportage.
Although Ash meant it as a light jab, Max finds that particular critique somewhat frustrating to accept.
