Character Setting

Edit

Akashi is the heroine of Tomihiko Morimi’s The Tatami Galaxy, a cool and intelligent engineering student whose sharp tongue, black hair, and comically extreme fear of moths make her instantly memorable.

Akashi is a female student in the Faculty of Engineering, Department of Architecture.

She is one year junior to both the Protagonist and Ozu.

She is portrayed as a rational, cool-headed young woman with black hair.

Her blunt way of speaking often keeps other people at a distance.

Her one unmistakable weakness is moths.

When confronted by one, she panics completely and lets out a cartoonish scream of “Gyoeeeeee!”

She loves the small bear mascot known as “Mochiguma.”

She is also described as a fan of the five-colored plush mascot line Fuwafuwa Sentai Mochigman, and carries one of the mascots with her at all times.

A key part of her role is her connection to the Protagonist.

Although they meet again at university, they had actually already encountered each other once before he enrolled.

Across the story’s many alternate routes and parallel-world-like variations, she continues to appear in the Protagonist’s life.

Like Ozu, she is a recurring bond in every path, suggesting a deep sense of fate.

In the Novel

In the novel version, Akashi joins the film club Misogi.

Because of her connection to Ozu, under whom she had been working, she becomes a disciple of Higuchi in the autumn of her first year.

She later leaves Misogi before long.

Even so, various episodes imply that she eventually enters a mutually fulfilled romantic relationship with the Protagonist.

She also first meets the second-year Protagonist at the Shimogamo Shrine used book fair during the summer of her first year.

That encounter becomes an important point in their shared history.

In the Anime

In the anime adaptation, her affiliation changes depending on the episode.

She is sometimes shown as part of the Birdman circle, and in other cases as Higuchi’s disciple.

In the Birdman route, she originally belongs to the bicycle club Soleil during her first year.

That same year, she wins the overall road race at Keage in both the men’s and women’s combined standings.

After that victory, she immediately leaves Soleil and joins Birdman.

She pours all of her prize money into building an aircraft.

In the summer of her second year, she helps the film club Misogi as a specialist in 3DCG and visual effects.

During this time, Aijima develops feelings for her.

In the anime, her romantic relationship with the Protagonist is explicitly depicted as fulfilled only in the final episode.

This makes her ending feel especially significant.

Akashi is consistently presented as an elegant, black-haired young woman with a composed and intellectual aura.

Her cool demeanor is one of her defining traits.

At the same time, she is not soft-spoken in the conventional sense.

She says exactly what she thinks, and that honesty can make her seem difficult to approach.

Her moth phobia creates a striking contrast with her usual poise.

The sudden collapse of her calm image into total chaos is one of her most famous character quirks.

In the anime, she is shown wearing a dress with full-length leggings.

This design reinforces her simple, practical, and distinctive look.

Protagonist

Akashi shares a long-running and unusually persistent connection with the Protagonist.

Even before university, the two had already crossed paths once.

No matter which route the Protagonist takes, he encounters her again.

That repeated reappearance gives her the feeling of being his destined person.

The novel strongly suggests that their relationship eventually becomes a fulfilled romance.

The anime confirms this outcome most clearly in its final episode.

Ozu

Akashi is one year below Ozu academically and belongs to the same faculty.

In the novel, her connection to him is what leads to her working under him and then later becoming Higuchi’s disciple.

Akashi is voiced in the anime by Maaya Sakamoto.

The origin of the name “Akashi” comes from the author’s friend, “Mr. Akashi from the Faculty of Law.”

Some episodes associated with her were also reportedly inspired by that person’s younger sister.

According to Yusuke Nakamura, who illustrated the original novel covers and created the anime’s character draft designs, her early image was conceived as something like a blend of Naomi Yamaguchi and actress Tomoyo Harada.

This was only a conceptual image during the planning stage.
