Alastor is the male Crimson Lord contracted to Shana in *Shakugan no Shana*, a transcendent godlike being of the Crimson Realm whose true name is Flame of Heaven and Earth and whose authority is judgment and condemnation.
Alastor is usually called a Crimson Lord, but that label is only partly accurate.
More precisely, he is one of the supernatural beings equivalent to gods in the Crimson Realm, and is described as a true demon god of the Crimson Realm.
His true name, Flame of Heaven and Earth, is the personal name that expresses his essence in the language of this world.
It carries the sense of “that which burns everything to ashes.”
Alastor is only his common name.
It was taken from the name of a deity in mythology.
He contracted with a human in this world in order to punish his fellow beings who disrupt the balance of the world and bring harm to both realms.
Because of this role, he is known as the God of Punishment, a divine being who governs judgment and condemnation.
Among the beings of the Crimson Realm, he is treated as a manifestation of world law itself.
He is also said to be the only existence capable of killing the Snake of the Festival and the sole being able to destroy the perfect creation that entity brings forth.

Alastor normally slumbers within Shana.
He expresses his will through a pendant-type Divine Tool called Cocytus, a black jewel with a golden ring design.
When he manifests, he appears as crimson flame forming a gigantic winged and horned figure.
Within the blazing heat lies a mass of pitch-black darkness, and his wings are covered in a membrane reminiscent of the night sky, complete with true blazing eyes.
His flame color is a deep crimson associated with absolute destruction.
It is described as the fire that “burns everything to the ground.”
His divine nature places him above ordinary Crimson Lords.
That status gives him a solemn presence, immense authority, and a role tied directly to cosmic justice.
Alastor usually carries himself with great dignity and firmness.
He is earnest, commanding, and deeply serious about the mission of the Flame Haze.
At the same time, he has a surprisingly vulnerable side.
When confronted with matters beyond his understanding, especially romance or a girl’s feelings, he can become extremely flustered.
According to Wilhelmina Carmel, he is weak when dealing with women.
He is also rather caring by nature and can be unexpectedly attentive.
As a god, and as someone once praised through his contractor as the strongest Flame Haze, he seems to possess a certain degree of pride.
When he learned that his authority and fearsome reputation had declined after staying away from the front lines for several centuries, he was so shocked that he sank into discouragement for a while.
He can seem majestic one moment and strangely human the next.
That contrast is one of the most memorable parts of his character.
Alastor and Shana share an exceptionally strong spiritual bond.
He is her contractor, guardian, and closest guide.
Even so, that closeness does not mean he understands everything about her.
When Shana hides “a young girl’s worries” from him because he is male, he often becomes uneasy or openly dissatisfied.
He is intensely devoted to her role as a Flame Haze.
However, because he raised her too exclusively as a warrior, he initially failed to teach her ordinary knowledge about being a girl, which gives him a rather comically imperfect side.
When topics related to Shana’s femininity come up, he can become almost embarrassingly overprotective.
In those moments, he resembles a doting parent more than an awe-inspiring god.
Alastor and Mathilde Saint-Omer were in love with each other.
Their bond was mutual and profound.
Even after her death, he continues to love her.
That enduring devotion remains one of the clearest emotional foundations of his character.
Because of Mathilde, his feelings are complicated when it comes to others connected to her memory.
This becomes especially important in his attitude toward both Shana and Merihim.
Merihim a.k.a. Shiro also held feelings for Mathilde Saint-Omer.
For that reason, he and Alastor regard each other as romantic rivals and do not think highly of one another.
Their tension is not only ideological or historical.
It is also deeply personal.
Alastor recognized Yuji Sakai’s value as a fighting asset from an early stage.
He acknowledged Yuji’s usefulness in battle and his growing importance.
However, he did not consider Yuji mature enough to stand as Shana’s true comrade-in-arms.
On top of that, he reacted harshly to the fact that Yuji was a boy toward whom Shana had begun to develop feelings.
As a result, Alastor often gave Yuji severe guidance.
Part of it was practical training, and part of it was unmistakably personal disapproval.
Alastor holds Chigusa Sakai in high regard.
He respects her deeply because she possesses the kind of understanding he lacks in matters of a woman’s heart, romance, and parental wisdom.
Compared with his own uncertainty in such areas, her insight feels extraordinary to him.
He therefore treats her with notable respect.
A deity with the same name, Alastor, appears in Zoroastrian tradition as an official who carries out punishments in hell.
This mythological connection informs his common name.
The name Cocytus also has a classical origin.
It refers to one of the rivers of the underworld in Greek mythology.
A poetic line associated with Alastor describes his destructive, apocalyptic nature:
“The endless flow of time stops its pulse, and people burst into flames without a sound.
No one notices, the world slips away, and all is wrapped in the crimson fire of the Crimson Realm.”
