Character Setting

Edit

Giselle is a half-divine being and dragonkin who serves Hades, the Lord of the Underworld, with a rough and straightforward demeanor but a highly dutiful and earnest nature.

Giselle appears as a beautiful woman in her twenties, though her actual age is well over 400 years old.

Her signature look is a battered white gothic-lolita dress that is carelessly worn, exposing her navel and shoulders.

In illustrations, the dress is loosely tied with strings in the front, and the manga depicts her undergarments in full view.

She carries a large scythe as her weapon, which matches her reaper-like theme.

Her everyday speech is harsh, and she struggles with polite language, often tripping over her words when trying.

She comes across as masculine and tends to lose her composure when angered, becoming reckless.

Despite this, she is remarkably conscientious, practical, and serious, always attempting to fulfill her duties.

Giselle is quick-witted, honest, and even willing to put in extra effort when needed.

She shows deep respect for Rory Mercury, addressing her as "older sister" and readily admitting her own inferiority in direct combat.

Although inexperienced, Giselle identifies as strictly heterosexual and genuinely tries to understand Hades' unique tastes.

Giselle was born into the dragonkin race and currently serves as a sub-god under Hades.

She is addressed with the honorific "Your Eminence" in formal contexts among her kind.

As a well-known figure associated with Hades and the dragonkin, she possesses a unique status in the world.

Her main weapon is a giant scythe, which she wields with supernatural skill.

Giselle is capable of commanding dragons, demonstrated when she tamed two newly born twin dragons after awakening a dormant fire dragon and pairing it with a water dragon.

She leads flights of wyverns in combat, turning the tide in large-scale monster battles.

Her divine endurance and physical prowess far surpass that of ordinary beings.

She serves Hades faithfully, calling him “My Lord” and attempting to understand even his eccentricities.

Her relationship with Rory Mercury is both respectful and somewhat deferential, openly acknowledging her own limitations.

After mistaking Yōji Itami’s “power” for the defeat of her dragons and her own survival, she comes to respect him and develops a fondness after he offers her rations when she is starving.

She interacts with Lelei La Lalena, Tuka Luna Marceau, and the rest of the main group through various allied circumstances.

Despite her divine status, she is forced to work as a maid to pay off debts she incurred from unknowingly eating without paying, which bemuses both herself and those around her.

Her unpaid eating habits and tendency to accrue debt lead to the humorous situation of a sub-god working as a café maid.

Her unexpected liking for Japanese field rations, especially curry rice, marks a memorable moment in her interactions with humans.

Most customers assume her maid outfit is cosplay due to her striking inhuman appearance and unfamiliarity with mortal customs.

She eats far more than the daily staff meal allows and splurges on expensive drinks, making her debt difficult to resolve.

Giselle once reacted to Itami suppressing his emotions with magic by dramatically lying down and asking to be “stepped on,” shocking her companions.

"I almost bite my tongue every time I try to speak politely!"

"If you're that strong, just show me! I'd rather fight head-on than scheme behind backs."

"This curry rice… it’s amazing! I’ve never tasted anything like it!"

Duty to Hades

Giselle is assigned by Hades to capture Rory Mercury.

To achieve this, she awakens a dormant fire dragon, pairs it with a water dragon to produce twin new dragons, and sets them against Rory.

However, the sudden intervention of modern military hardware—such as F-4 jets, self-propelled howitzers, and attack helicopters—results in her dragons’ swift defeat, prompting Giselle to retreat.

Mistaking these feats as Itami’s doing, she gains a wary respect for him.

Interactions with Humanity

Later, while starving at Knappnui, Giselle is fed as much self-defense force rations (curry rice) as she can eat by Yōji Itami, which wins her over.

Subsequently, after losing her dragons, she acts as Hades’ messenger to Rory and her allies.

Without realizing it, she racks up a food bill at the Arnus Cooperative Café and ends up indebted, forcing her to work as a maid—a bizarre sight for one of her status.

Her diligent attitude makes her popular among coworkers, though her enormous appetite and taste for expensive drinks keep her perpetually in debt.

Major Battles and Redemption

During the Gate Crisis, she arrives leading a flight of wyverns to battle insectoid monsters unleashed by the rampaging Gate.

Her timely arrival and leadership help swiftly turn the tide.

With Rory’s assistance, her debt is finally erased as thanks for her heroics.

Life After the Gate

After the Gate closes, Giselle oversees the construction of the Hades Temple in Arnus, but struggles with the cost of developing its grounds.

Upon learning from Tuka that the self-defense force buries soldiers with all their valuables, she proposes to recover and reuse these funds—for use in temple development—on the condition that the dead are properly reburied.

Side Stories and Web Version

In a side story, Giselle lends her wyverns, Ifri and Efri, to support Yōji Itami’s search for Tuka’s father, Hodolew Ray Marceau.

When she sees emotionlessly magical Itami, she jokingly requests to be “stepped on,” causing exasperation among her allies.

In the web version, during the battle to reclaim the base, Giselle charges in with a water dragon to attack the Gate directly but is defeated, dismembered by Rory, and ultimately rolls out of the story as just a talking head after a massive explosion.

Giselle stands out as a rare blend: a dignified sub-god with down-to-earth flaws, making her both memorable and approachable.

Her struggle to fit in with human society and her interactions with both deities and mortals add comic charm and depth to the story.

Despite her fearsome power, her misadventures around debt and work show a surprisingly human side.
