Character Setting

Edit

Jukai is a kind-hearted doctor who picked up and raised Hyakkimaru, giving him prosthetic limbs and teaching him to fight. He once served a warlord but was haunted by his violent past. Jukai became a father figure to Hyakkimaru, even though his actions attracted dangerous monsters. His story is full of regret, forgiveness, and a deep wish to help others, even as he struggles with his own mistakes. Jukai’s skill in making prosthetics and his role as Hyakkimaru’s mentor stand out most.

Jukai is a man with a strong build and a big, well-kept beard.

He often wears simple clothes, like a doctor or craftsman.

His hands look skilled and precise, showing how good he is at making things like artificial limbs.

Jukai is gentle and caring.

He is very patient, especially with Hyakkimaru and children.

He often thinks about right and wrong and feels deep regret about his past.

Even though he has a sad history, he tries his best to help and comfort people who are suffering.

Jukai was once a loyal retainer for a warlord named Shiba.

His lord made him torture and kill people who rebelled, cutting off their fingers and ears.

Unable to handle the pain he caused, Jukai tried to end his own life by jumping into the sea.

A ship from the mainland rescued him, where he learned how to make prosthetic limbs.

He returned to his homeland and was loved by villagers because he gave artificial arms and legs to wounded people for free.

One boy named Kaname, who got a prosthetic leg from Jukai, left in anger after learning Jukai had killed his father.

After Kaname left, Jukai found Hyakkimaru—a baby without limbs or eyes—floating in a river.

Jukai is very skilled with his hands and can make lifelike prosthetic arms, legs, and even eyes from wood and pottery.

These prosthetics are so well made, Hyakkimaru can use them almost like real body parts.

Jukai is also knowledgeable about medicine and healing.

He knows how to teach self-defense and sword fighting to protect people from monsters.

  • Hyakkimaru: Jukai acts like a father to Hyakkimaru. He names him, raises him, and makes his artificial limbs. Hyakkimaru calls Jukai “Papa.”
  • Kaname: Kaname was a boy Jukai helped, but he left after learning about Jukai’s dark past.
  • Kagemitsu Daigo: Jukai takes the place of this man, Hyakkimaru’s real father, by raising and loving Hyakkimaru.

Doctor for the Dead

Jukai travels battlefields and comforts the dead by giving them prosthetic limbs.

He works as a doctor who honors lost lives and tries to help people heal even after war.

Jukai’s Past and Regret

In Episode 3 “The Story of Jukai,” his history is shown.

Jukai used to hurt and kill people on his lord’s orders.

He tried to end his life, but was rescued and learned how to make prosthetics.

He settled as a doctor, but after Kaname found out about his past and left, Jukai felt lost and alone.

Raising Hyakkimaru

Soon after, Jukai finds the baby Hyakkimaru, who has many missing body parts.

He is shocked, but touched by the child’s will to live.

He names the baby Hyakkimaru and becomes his guardian.

Jukai gives Hyakkimaru prosthetic limbs and teaches him how to protect himself.

He soon sees that monsters are drawn to Hyakkimaru and, to protect both of them, sends Hyakkimaru away to travel.

Before Hyakkimaru leaves, Jukai gives him a special prosthetic arm with a sword inside.

Reunion and Doubts

In Episode 17, Jukai and Hyakkimaru meet again after a long time.

Jukai is happy to see Hyakkimaru alive but worries after learning about Kagemitsu Daigo’s deal with demons.

Knowing the burden Hyakkimaru carries, Jukai regrets saving him, but feels relieved after Hyakkimaru calls him “Mother.”

He encourages Hyakkimaru to keep going.

Final Farewell

In Episodes 23 and 24, Jukai is again part of the story.

He enters the burning Daigo castle with Nuinokata and goes to where Hyakkimaru and Tahomaru are fighting.

Jukai encourages Hyakkimaru to “find a human heart.”

He then stays in the burning castle, sharing its fate.

His Feelings and Return of Hope

Jukai thinks his life is not worth much because of his past crimes.

Because of this, monsters see him as already dead and usually don’t attack him.

In Episode 17, when a monster bites his leg, it seems he regains the will to live.

  • In “Black Jack,” another work by the same creator, Jukai appears as BJ’s mentor, Dr. Togakushi.
  • Jukai’s voice actors have also played major roles as Kagemitsu Daigo and other important characters.
  • In the 1969 anime, Jukai is called “Juko” and his backstory is changed a little.
  • The 2019 anime adds extra details to Jukai’s past and why he helps Hyakkimaru.
  • In the live-action movie, Jukai is a magical healer who makes Hyakkimaru’s body from fallen soldiers.

Jukai never finds value in his own life because of his dark deeds from before.

However, he keeps helping people, showing that even those who messed up in the past can do good.
