Character Setting

Edit

Genus-hakase is the founder and leader of the organization “House of Evolution,” a human scientist in the world of One-Punch Man whose body has been rejuvenated by his own research and who commands dozens of his own clones.

Genus-hakase is a male human scientist and the mastermind behind the House of Evolution, a secret research organization dedicated to forced artificial evolution of humanity.

Although his actual age is over 70, he appears much younger thanks to his own rejuvenation experiments and lives surrounded by numerous clones of himself.

From early childhood, his extraordinary genius made it painful for him to interact with ordinary people, leaving him isolated and detached.

At the age of 15, he conceived his lifelong dream: the artificial evolution of humanity as a whole, aiming to redesign the human species through science.

When he later formally proposed this concept, society deemed his ideas dangerously radical, and he was expelled from the academic community.

Betrayed and disillusioned with humanity, he abandoned conventional science circles and established the House of Evolution, an underground facility focused on extreme biological experimentation.

Within the House of Evolution, he produced many vicious monsters based on animals, insects, and other organisms, combining their traits with human biology.

He also created multiple clones of himself to assist in research and operations, effectively turning his lab into a self-replicating think tank of Genus-hakase copies.

He once worked on a project known as the “Immortal Series,” an attempt to engineer unkillable beings.

Zombieman, now an S-class hero with extraordinary regenerative abilities, is the only successful product of this Immortal Series and can be considered Genus-hakase’s “creation” or “child.”

Genus-hakase is voiced by Daisuke Namikawa in the anime adaptation, who also voices the S-class hero Butagami.

In the anime, he appears both in his mad-scientist phase and later in his more mellow, post-House-of-Evolution life.

Early Ambitions and the House of Evolution

As leader of the House of Evolution, Genus-hakase devoted himself entirely to forcibly accelerating evolution, disregarding ethics and individual rights.

His facility was filled with bioengineered creatures, combat-ready monsters, and advanced genetic tools meant to reshape life itself.

After the incident involving Mosquito Musume, Genus-hakase became fascinated by Saitama’s seemingly limitless physical power.

Seeing Saitama as an ideal specimen, he decided he “had found a perfect sample” and resolved to examine Saitama’s body by force, if necessary.

To capture Saitama, he dispatched one monster after another from his facility, only for them to be systematically defeated by Saitama and Genos.

Underestimating them, he treated the situation as an extended live experiment, confident in his creations and his own theories.

When Saitama and Genos finally traced the attacks back to the House of Evolution and arrived at the headquarters, Genus-hakase prepared his ultimate weapon.

To repel them, he released his greatest masterpiece (aside from personality), the monstrous Asura Kabuto, a being designed as his pinnacle of combat evolution.

Defeat of Asura Kabuto and Change of Heart

Asura Kabuto, the most powerful product of Genus-hakase’s research, was intended to be the definitive proof of his evolutionary theories.

However, in the battle inside the facility, Saitama annihilated Asura Kabuto with a single punch, completely shattering the doctor’s assumptions.

Witnessing Asura Kabuto’s instant defeat, Genus-hakase realized that the “ultimate evolution” he had pursued was fundamentally flawed.

He recognized that his research, built on force and arrogance, had been utterly defeated by Saitama’s overwhelming but unpretentious strength.

Confronted with this reality, he reached a profound conclusion: it was not humanity that needed forced evolution, but himself who needed to change.

He abandoned his dream of forcibly evolving the human species, gave up on his grand scheme, and accepted that he had been wrong.

As a result, he effectively disbanded and destroyed the House of Evolution.

The sprawling organization that had once housed countless monsters and clones was left in ruins as Genus-hakase walked away from his previous life.

From Mad Scientist to Takoyaki Shop Owner

Even after renouncing his vision of artificial human evolution, Genus-hakase did not stop being a scientist.

He shifted his research toward more mundane biological experiments, though his genius still produced bizarre results.

While experimenting in the field of human regeneration, he accidentally discovered a way to produce an infinite supply of regenerating octopus tentacles.

Seeing a practical and peaceful use for this discovery, he decided to use the endless octopus legs as ingredients for takoyaki.

This led him to open a takoyaki stand called “House of Takoyaki,” a playful nod to his former organization’s name.

Instead of monstrous enforcers, his main assistant is now Armored Gorilla, who works as a salesperson for the shop.

In the anime, particularly episode 11, Genus-hakase and Armored Gorilla are shown preparing for the grand opening of the House of Takoyaki.

These scenes highlight his transition from villainous mastermind to quirky, semi-retired scientist living a quieter life.

Ongoing Research and Relationship with Zombieman

Although he gave up on the dream of forcibly evolving humanity as a species, Genus-hakase did not entirely abandon scientific innovation.

His research facilities still exist in some form, and he continues to perform specialized procedures and experiments.

Zombieman, now an S-class hero of the Hero Association, is revealed to be Genus-hakase’s “offspring” from the Immortal Series project.

Their relationship is complex: scientist and subject, creator and creation, but no longer purely antagonistic.

During the Monster Association arc, Genus-hakase meets Zombieman again for the first time in roughly ten years.

In this reunion, Genus-hakase appears calmer and more reflective, showing how much he has changed since the House of Evolution era.

He shares with Zombieman his own analysis of Saitama’s secret, offering insights into why Saitama might be so overwhelmingly strong.

This discussion emphasizes that although he has set aside grandiose schemes, his analytical brilliance and curiosity remain intact.

Evidence suggests that he still conducts enhancement procedures on Zombieman, further refining his regenerative abilities and combat potential.

In this way, Genus-hakase continues to contribute to the world from the shadows, not as a would-be evolutionary tyrant, but as a brilliant, if morally gray, scientist who has learned at least some humility.

Genus-hakase is a prodigy whose intelligence isolated him from others, causing him to view ordinary people as inferior and difficult to endure.

This emotional distance and frustration pushed him toward cold, utilitarian thinking, where ethics were secondary to scientific progress.

In his House of Evolution days, he was arrogant, fully convinced of the righteousness of forced evolution and his own superior vision.

He treated living beings as experimental material, and even cloned himself without concern for individuality or personal identity.

However, the humiliation of seeing Asura Kabuto destroyed by a single punch forced him to confront the limits of his worldview.

He proved capable of introspection, admitting defeat and choosing to change instead of clinging to a broken ideology.

In his later life, he appears more relaxed, even slightly comedic, running a takoyaki shop with a former combat cyborg gorilla as his assistant.

Despite this softer exterior, his vast scientific knowledge, genetic expertise, and capacity for improvement make him one of the most fascinating support characters in One-Punch Man.
