Character Setting

Edit

Martin Upmont is the dorm leader of the Earth House at Asticassia School of Technology in Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury. He is known for being indecisive and easily flustered, but has a kind heart and a strong sense of responsibility. Martin gets caught in many troubles caused by the people around him, and his actions end up having big effects, especially during tough times. His most important storyline involves his struggle with loyalty and duty when he reports his friend Nika to the authorities, putting friendship and safety on a collision course.

Martin Upmont is a tall young man, nearly 190cm in height. He often appears with a worried or nervous expression, reflecting his unsure personality. He wears the standard Asticassia school uniform like other students.

Martin is indecisive and sometimes comes off as unreliable, but deep down, he cares a lot about his friends and his duties as dorm leader. He likes to keep things peaceful and tries not to stand out or boss others around. This makes him easy to talk to, and other dorm members don't feel pressured by him. He rarely gets angry or shouts, and often acts as the one who holds the group together from behind the scenes.

Martin is a classic "hardworking guy" who worries over small issues like budget problems or keeping the dorm tidy. Even when things get tough, he tries to face his responsibilities and does his best to protect everyone in Earth House.

Martin is a third-year Business Strategy student at the Asticassia School of Technology. His student number is KS117. He became the leader of the Earth House dorm, a group mostly made up of students from Earth who often feel left out at school.

Martin is not a standout pilot or mechanic like some of his friends. However, he is good at administrative tasks, such as keeping track of the dorm's budget and organizing the team during emergencies. He has a good sense of observation and can understand the strengths and weaknesses of others. In moments of crisis, Martin bravely steps up, even if he is scared on the inside.

Martin is close with Chuatury Panlunch and Nika Nanaura, both fellow Earth House members. He cares about everyone in the dorm and sometimes acts as the older brother of the group. Even when he disagrees or worries about their actions, he deeply values his friends and wants what is best for them.

Martin’s relationship with Nika becomes complicated after he witnesses her sending signals to terrorists. He is torn between trusting her and protecting the rest of the dorm. With Chuatury Panlunch, there are moments of conflict, but also understanding.

  • Martin is often the character who says things that viewers are probably thinking. He acts as the "voice of reason" in tense or funny moments.
  • He is surprisingly tall, being almost 190cm.
  • He enjoys simple things like a good meal, as seen during the Incubation Party.
  • Martin is known for his "high-pitched" voice, especially when nervous.
  • He is not a very good singer.
  • He worries about being an Earthian and feels it's sometimes hard to fit in at Asticassia because of this.

  • "It's tough being from Earth."
  • "Oh no! The Peil Company's mobile suits are all about speed. And they have a new model..."
  • "Oh no, if this keeps up Aerial will..."
  • "Doesn't riding a Gundam mean you'll die?!"
  • "Nika... what did you do just now...?"
  • "Nika has never told me anything... not even about herself..."
  • "No way...!?"
  • "What I did was the right thing, right!?"

The Start of His Leadership

Martin first appears as a spectator in a Duel at the school. He is soon seen in the cafeteria, eating with Nika and Chuatury Panlunch. Martin worries when Suletta Mercury is set to duel Guel Jeturk, and discusses Suletta’s background with others.

Martin is hesitant about letting a Spacian like Suletta join the Earth House at first, but quickly warms up after Nika vouches for her. He welcomes Suletta and does what he can to support her, even worrying over her Gundam, Aerial.

Facing Dorm Problems

Martin often acts as the one cleaning up after others and handling budget issues. He lacks any special skills compared to other dorm members, except for being observant in situations—like noticing the risk in fighting Peil Company mobile suits.

During times of bias reporting on Earthians, Martin shares his feelings with Ojelo Gabel and Nuno Kargan, showing his sense of solidarity with other Earth-born students.

The Trouble with Nika

The biggest test for Martin comes when, during an attack at Plant Quetta, he witnesses Nika Nanaura secretly signaling to terrorists, helping "Dawn of Fold" to escape. Unsure of what to do and realizing the possible danger to the whole dorm, Martin does not tell his friends at first, but after more tragic events happen at the school, he decides to report Nika to the authorities for everyone’s safety.

He suffers a lot from this decision, worried that he betrayed a friend. In counseling, Secelia Dote helps him see that while he tried to do the right thing, it might not have been the best way. Eventually, he confesses what happened to his dorm mates, who understand why Martin made his tough choice, even though some are upset.

Taking Risks for His Friends

Despite his fears and doubts, Martin tries his best to lead and help. He gets hurt while defending Suletta, goes on a rescue mission inside Quiet Zero with Chuatury Panlunch and others, and even faces danger while piloting in battle. Though he isn’t the bravest, he always puts his friends first.

During the final events, he is part of the group that gets taken as hostages at Quiet Zero, but is saved thanks to Suletta. Three years later, Martin welcomes Nika back after her time in prison, proudly standing with his friends from the now-graduated Earth House.

Martin represents someone who might not always have the answers or the courage but who steps up when it really counts. His journey is about learning what it means to be a good leader and how to protect both friends and his own sense of right and wrong.
