Mrs. Goto is the wife of Kakushi Gotō and the mother of Hime Gotō. Her name is revealed in the theatrical compilation version. In the story, she appears only in flashback scenes, and as a child, her appearance is strikingly similar to her daughter Hime. She is depicted as a methodical person, preparing boxes containing items appropriate for Hime’s age and storing them in the closet for both her daughter and husband.
It is revealed that when Hime turns 18, Mrs. Goto was involved in a maritime accident when Hime was a child and has been missing ever since. Although her body was never found, her situation is regarded as almost certainly deceased. The creator, Koji Kumeta, does not deny her death in interviews, effectively confirming her status as deceased.
In the original manga, Mrs. Goto worked as a color coordinator during her lifetime but contracted an illness that gradually caused her to lose her ability to perceive color. Before losing her color vision completely, she expressed her wish to see the "blue of the sea" at an island she had visited with Kakushi Gotō and Hime Gotō one last time. Entrusting Hime to Kakushi Gotō, she departed on a trip and subsequently suffered the accident.
Additionally, the layout of their new house in Nakameguro was designed to be identical to their home in Kamakura. This was a thoughtful decision by Kakushi Gotō so that, in the event Mrs. Goto returned alive and her eye condition had progressed, she would feel reassured navigating a house with a familiar layout.
