Nachzehrer is one of the “Nine Vampire Kings” from *Arne no Jikenbo*, a gluttonous, violence-loving vampire whose rough delinquent attitude hides a tragic human past and terrifying combat power.
Nachzehrer is the original vampire from whom Arne Neuntöte was created, making him one of the legendary “Nine Kings”.
Despite this lofty title, he talks like a street punk, is extremely simple-minded and quick to anger, and was even sealed into a plush toy by Arne.
He is constantly hungry and is said to have eaten both his clothes and his own body right after his vampiric rebirth.
In reality, he possesses immense physical strength and the ability to manipulate shadows, making him one of the most combat-capable vampires in the series.
He functions as a precious straight man and voice of common sense in the story, often pointing out absurdities no one else will.
Because of this, he is frequently used as a “commentary” character to keep the plot moving.
Name: Nachzehrer
Gender: Male
Species: Vampire (one of the Nine Vampire Kings)
Affiliation/Setting: Appears in *Arne no Jikenbo*
Likes: Eating, violence
Dislikes / Weaknesses: Precise manipulation of blood
Drinks he can consume: Beer (and virtually anything else, according to the creator)
He believes he is a “brains type” strategist, but in practice he is more of a hot-blooded brawler.
He is loud, impulsive, and often angry, yet still more reasonable than many characters around him.
Nachzehrer has the manner of a delinquent: crude wording, loud voice, and a tendency to solve problems with his fists.
He is simple-minded and often acts on instinct, especially when hungry or excited by violence.
He considers himself intelligent and strategic, but the story clearly treats this as a gag.
Despite his self-image, he is frequently outwitted or outmaneuvered, emphasizing his role as a lovable idiot.
At the same time, he is one of the few characters who reliably reacts like a normal person to bizarre events.
This makes him the de facto straight man, constantly delivering reactions and complaints that mirror the audience’s thoughts.
He genuinely loves eating and fighting, viewing violence as something “awesome” and exhilarating.
His catchphrases emphasize his ego and love of chaos, such as:
“I am you… and you are me!!”
“Violence is the best, right?!”
Even though he is brash, there are hints of deeper layers in his personality, rooted in his human life as a starving man.
Those traces appear in his obsession with food and his refusal to waste the lives of those who sacrificed themselves for him.
Nachzehrer has a wild, “punk” visual style that sharply contrasts with Arne Neuntöte’s cooler, more composed look.
He has short hair that stands up messily, with a gradient from orange at the roots to red at the tips, giving a fiery impression.
His eyes are sharp and predatory, with bright yellow irises that emphasize his feral vampire nature.
He typically wears an orange tank top, covered by a dark navy jacket and a mantle-like garment whose hem resembles bat-shaped blades.
In keeping with his backstory of eating his own clothes and body, his outfit features visible patchwork, seams, and red triangular motifs.
These design elements make him look stitched-together and slightly monstrous, adding to his rough, dangerous aura.
His forearms and hands are notably not normal skin.
Within the canon, this is because he literally ate his own hands up to the wrists when he clawed his way out of the grave after becoming a vampire.
Overall, his visual impression is that of a wild, rowdy delinquent vampire, standing in direct visual contrast to Arne’s elegant style.
Nachzehrer is described as possessing tremendous physical power, befitting a member of the Nine Vampire Kings.
He excels in close combat, where his brutality and durability shine.
His signature supernatural ability is the manipulation of shadows.
He can control and shape shadows in battle, granting him a unique fighting style that emphasizes both offense and intimidation.
As a vampire, he gains nourishment and power from blood.
However, unlike other vampires, he can eat and drink virtually anything, even non-food items.
Despite this, ordinary food does not fully count as “nutritional” in vampiric terms.
Blood is still required to properly fuel his abilities and maintain his true power.
When he is sealed inside a plush toy, he animates it by manipulating the blood stuffed inside as filling.
If a large quantity of blood is poured over the plush, he can control that blood and reconstruct his original body.
Even when his heart is removed and placed inside Arne Neuntöte, he does not consciously perceive what is happening.
In that state, he is essentially dormant and “asleep,” unaware of outside events.
In one scene, after Lynn Reinweiß learns that Arne can drink only hot chocolate, she also asks Nachzehrer what he can drink.
He answers that he has drunk beer before.
According to comments from the creator, the concept of “getting drunk” does not really apply to Nachzehrer.
He can drink beer but does not experience intoxication, and he has no real preferences or aversions to specific foods.
He is capable of eating and drinking almost anything, including items that are not normally considered food.
Among all the vampires, he is unique in this extreme adaptability.
When Lynn asks, “Please drink with me when I become an adult,” he initially refuses.
However, he then says something along the lines of “Do what you want,” implying that he would actually go along with it in the end.
Different parts of the game present Nachzehrer with humorous “status tags” that reflect his current condition.
These are used as playful, meta-style labels rather than literal statistics.
Interlude
In one interlude, he is described with labels such as:
“One of the Nine Kings”
Charisma: very high
Strategy: low
Speech quirks: extremely strong
These emphasize his legendary title but also highlight that he is far from a strategic mastermind.
Case 2 (Problem Part)
During Case 2’s problem section, he gets different comedic attributes:
“One of the Vampire Kings”
Softness: maximum
Glare: maximum
Action: low
The joke here is that he is visually intense and frightening but not necessarily active or productive.
Case 2 (Solution Part)
In the Case 2 solution section, when he is in plush form, his labels change again:
“Plush toy whose consciousness has returned”
Confusion: maximum
Situational understanding: low
Roundness: maximum
This underscores the comedy of a terrifying vampire king reduced to a round, baffled plush toy.
This section contains major spoilers regarding his origin and the events around his birth as a vampire.
Before becoming Nachzehrer, he was a human commonly referred to as the “Hungry Man.”
He lived in the slums, struggling to survive while searching for food together with a younger boy he had taken under his wing, named Zisye.
As a baby, the Hungry Man had been rescued and taken in by a man he regarded as a father.
However, by the time he learned to steal in order to live, this “father” had been killed by someone.
The townspeople denied him any path to a dignified human life, treating him as less than human.
At one point, a nun took pity on him and gave him bread.
Later, he went to a well and found Zisye there, mutilated and missing his lower body, yet still clutching the stolen bread in his hands.
With his dying breath, Zisye told him, “Please eat until you are full for my sake too,” and then passed away.
After that, the Hungry Man was beaten nearly to death by soldiers and left in critical condition.
At that moment, the previous Nachzehrer appeared before him, taking the form of a humanoid with pig-like features.
The former Nachzehrer urged hi
