Ekubo is a powerful evil spirit who looks like a creepy energy being with red marks on his face that almost make him look human. He once wanted to become a god and tried to use people to reach that dream. Ekubo is often selfish and cunning, but he also can be funny and loyal, especially to Shigeo Kageyama (Mob). Even though he used to be an enemy, he sticks around Mob and helps him out, showing a friendly and protective side. Ekubo’s abilities include possessing people and unlocking their hidden strength, but he’s not just evil—he doesn’t hurt people if he can avoid it, and he learns a lot from being Mob’s friend. Throughout his story, Ekubo faces big changes, comes to understand the value of friendship, and even helps save the day when things get really dangerous.
Ekubo first shows up looking like a very strong and scary spirit, with a big muscular body and creepy red patterns on his face.
He can send out hypnosis waves to control lots of people at once, like when he led the Smile Religion group.
After fighting with Mob, Ekubo loses a lot of power and turns into a weird, floating, balloon-like spirit, which people say looks like a gross jellyfish.
In this weak form, he is green in the anime and can float around or grow arms and legs if he wants.
He can also switch between being visible or invisible to normal people.
If he eats other spirits, he gets stronger.
When he possesses someone, red blush marks appear on their face, but that’s only for the audience to see.

When he is strong, he can send out waves to brainwash crowds.
He shoots energy beams from his mouth as an attack.

As God Ekubo, he moves at super speed, flies, and can crush his enemies with his energy blasts.

He also helps Ritsu Kageyama start using his own powers.
Later, Arataka Reigen, Mob’s boss, learns about Ekubo, and Ekubo becomes an ally to Mob’s whole group.

Founding the Smile Religion
Ekubo first appears after taking over the leader of a religious group called Smile Religion, looking for a way to be worshiped by everyone.

When Mob visits, Ekubo tries to brainwash him but fails.
Defeat and New Form
Mob gets angry and defeats Ekubo easily with his psychic power.
After the fight, Ekubo is left almost powerless and turns into a small floating spirit.
Instead of disappearing, he keeps following Mob, planning to use Mob’s powers for his own goals.
Becoming Mob’s Sidekick
Ekubo helps Ritsu Kageyama awaken his psychic powers but is surprised when Ritsu’s actions don’t match Ekubo’s plans.
He often helps Mob out of trouble, sometimes risking his own safety.
He even helps when Mob’s younger brother is kidnapped, taking control of a bad guy’s body to help save him.
Ekubo shows that, even though he wants to use Mob, he also genuinely cares and wants to help.
God Tree Arc and Realization
His dream to be worshiped as a god reaches its highest point during the “God Tree” story.
Using the energy from the God Tree, he tries to brainwash the entire country and faces Mob in a big fight.
During their fight, Ekubo realizes he just wanted a friend, not power or worship.
They make up, and Ekubo gives up on becoming a god.
He sacrifices himself to save Mob from the out-of-control God Tree, then disappears.
Return and Afterwards
After Mob loses control of his own power, Ekubo is able to return to the world.
In the end, he is shown going along with Mob as a sidekick during Mob’s part-time jobs.
Ekubo often uses clever or peaceful ways instead of violence.
He makes jokes, loves to chat, and sometimes does things that make him look like a “good guy” even though he’s an evil spirit.
His actions, especially around Mob, often help them both grow and learn more about friendship and trust.
