The protagonist of this work is a high school third-year student known as "Tsutsun," whose real name is Hikari Tsutsui. He is an otaku who loves anime and games. Aside from his family and his friend Yuto Itō, who shares his interests, Hikari struggles to interact with the opposite sex or with others in general. As a result, he finds it difficult to read the mood, and his well-intentioned actions often backfire.
From elementary school through high school, Hikari has continued to deny himself because of his otaku interests, which has led to a lack of self-confidence. However, he is used to being bullied, so he is not easily shaken by small things. At first, he sees Iroha Igarashi as a fashionable girl who is the complete opposite of himself. But once they start dating, Hikari realizes that Iroha truly understands him, and he falls genuinely in love with her.
Through his relationship with Iroha, Hikari also succeeds in building relationships with people around him, such as Arisa Ishino, Sumie Ayado, and Anzu Takanashi, and he grows as a person. Still, from society’s perspective, he is often dismissed as an "unremarkable otaku," and people tend to think that he does not match well with Iroha. The good qualities of Hikari often go unrecognized, and he is sometimes criticized by appearance-focused characters like Anzu Takanashi and Chika Igarashi.
