The protagonist of the series, appearing in all works up to the Final Season and in "Musubimonogatari." He is a third-year student at a private high school in a provincial city and becomes involved in the "Koyomi Vamp" incident. He becomes a vampire after offering his blood to save the dying vampire, Kiss-Shot. Following various twists and turns, and on Meme's suggestion, he uses the interconnectivity of vampire abilities to drink Kiss-Shot's blood to the limit, becoming a quasi-human vampire. To hide the vampire bite marks from Oshino, he grows his hair long. In the anime, one eye is hidden by his hair, which moves like a living creature depending on his emotions, and he has a prominent ahoge. He is 165cm tall (slightly shorter than Hitagi), weighs 55kg, and was born in April. His grandfather named him. He is right-handed but wears a vintage watch on his right wrist. He owned two bicycles, one for commuting and one for mountain biking, both of which were damaged when confronting apparitions. After graduating high school, he moved out, got a driver's license, and drives a New Beetle, a gift from his parents for his high school graduation, which he adores despite Suruga's criticism of it being uncool. In serious parts, he works hard daily to save girls who have suffered from apparitions, and in comedic parts (conversations with each heroine), he generally plays the straight man. Until middle school, he was an excellent student, but after entering high school, he became a habitual underachiever in all subjects except mathematics. As of May of his third year, his deviation score is 46. He met Tsubasa during the spring break incident and became classmates with her in their third year, who then appointed him as the class vice-president for rehabilitation. He is kind-hearted and cannot abandon those in trouble. At the start of "Bakemonogatari," he was cool and cynical (a personality developed following an incident in his first year of high school), but as the story progresses, he becomes more frivolous, referring to his former cynical self as "savings." He also shows a peculiar sexual preference that escalates as the story progresses. He has been self-conscious about not growing taller since the second year of middle school and is often pointed out for his lack of knowledge, though he has a rich vocabulary, frequently using uncommon idioms and words. He has few friends and is often the butt of jokes, though he was not inconspicuous in school; according to Tsubasa, he was rather notorious. After forming a connection with Suruga, he became a celebrity within the school, revered by junior girls. He has a somewhat self-punishing aspect to his personality, and there is a discrepancy between how Koyomi describes his own character and actions and how other characters perceive him. Girls who have cooperated with him in resolving apparition-related incidents generally have a favorable view of him, though he is mostly unaware of it, which has also led to further apparition-related incidents. His interactions with Meme are sarcastic but reflect underlying trust, and he is treated as tsundere by Hitagi and Tsubasa. Due to the incidents he's been involved in, he dislikes cats. In "Mayoi Mai Mai," he starts dating Hitagi after she confesses to him. Later, in "Tsubasa Cat," he experiences his first kiss. He has two middle school-aged sisters, Karen and Tsukihi, who wake him up every morning. He finds it embarrassing to add "chan" to his sisters' names, so he used to avoid calling them by their names in public, but this restriction was lifted in "Tsubasa Family." He tends to be overprotective of his sisters, who adore him greatly. Hitagi and others have commented that he has an unusually close relationship with his sisters. He is also rumored to be a lolicon due to frequently sexually harassing Mayoi upon meeting her. As mentioned, Koyomi's vampire powers are hierarchically linked with Oshino's, making him extraordinarily physically capable and healing while Kiss-Shot remains in Oshino's form. However, when Oshino drinks Koyomi's blood to regain her strength, his physical abilities also increase. Either could return to their original form by killing the other, but neither intends to do so. They share not only powers but also personal and mental aspects; Koyomi's cool character deteriorated due to the influence of Oshino (initially Kiss-Shot). Currently, the influence is reversed, with Koyomi affecting Oshino's personality, preferences in people, manga, etc. In "Yotsugi Doll," changes such as not appearing in mirrors and instantly healing from fractures manifest, indicating he is becoming a born vampire (though strictly speaking, this is not a congenital/acquired distinction but rather whether he was bitten by a vampire). However, due to "Kurayami," his pairing with Oshino is severed, and after dying once, it resets, later restoring the pairing to the same level of vampirism as before. After graduating from private Naoetsu High School, he was accepted into the Science Department of Mathematics at the National Kurakunose University. He spends time with Hitagi and Sodachi, who also struggle to make friends. In "Musubimonogatari," set five years after the main story, he joins the National Police Agency as a police bureaucrat (career officer) and is assigned to the newly established Naoetsu Station Rumor Affairs Division during his four-month training period.
