King Marden. A character appearing in Volume 1. An incompetent king with a strong penchant for ostentatious displays of wealth. He is easily manipulated by sycophants hired from abroad. To divert dissatisfaction directed at him, he sends an expeditionary force to Natra after the Imperial garrison leaves, but suffers defeat and loses a crucial gold mine. In an attempt to reclaim it, he ultimately mobilizes the southern defense forces, which invites an invasion from Cabalinu, leading to the fall of the royal capital and his death.
