Tadafuyu Ashikaga is an illegitimate child of Takauji Ashikaga. In 1333, he was in Kamakura as a young monk at Tōshō-ji Temple and witnessed the fall of the Hōjō clan. Although he struggled with his relationship with his father, he resolved to meet him after receiving encouragement from Tokiyuki Hōjō, who returned to Kamakura in 1337.
