Joshi Kausei is a Japanese manga series created by Ken Wakai.

It started serialization in September 2013 and is still ongoing.

The story follows the hilarious, wordless everyday lives of three high school girls:

Momoko Futo, energetic and a bit mischievous; Shibumi Shibusawa, her serious, bespectacled friend; and Mayumi Furui, the shy and petite newcomer.

What makes Joshi Kausei special is its silent manga style—there are almost no speech bubbles or dialogue, with the story told through expressive art and fun sound effects.

The series was adapted into a TV anime aired in 2019, preserving its unique, mainly nonverbal storytelling.

Joshi Kausei first appeared in WEB Comic Action since 2013 and later switched to the web magazine web Action in April 2020.

Ken Wakai, the creator, designed the series around the idea of using visuals and character expression to narrate without relying on dialogue.

This approach makes the relationships and humor universally accessible—even if you don’t know Japanese, you won’t miss the fun.

Set in a typical Japanese high school, the series captures the vibrant and sometimes quirky world of adolescent girls.

Uniform culture is present, with characters showing off their personalities through variations, such as unbuttoned shirts, special hair ties, or distinct skirt lengths.

Though most events take place at school, glimpses of the characters’ after-school activities and hangout spots like family restaurants add more flavor to their world.

Joshi Kausei is a comedic slice-of-life series that observes high school girls as they navigate ordinary yet hilarious daily events.

Momoko Futo, who is always bursting with playful energy, finds herself in various fun situations—from struggling with sleepiness in class to spontaneous muscle training.

Shibumi Shibusawa tries to keep things orderly but often gets pulled into Momoko’s antics.

Mayumi Furui, still wearing her previous school’s uniform out of shyness, slowly grows more comfortable through the trio’s friendship.

Over time, the series paints a warm and funny picture of how close bonds form through various mishaps and laughter—all without conventional dialogue.

  • Silent Manga: A comic style where the story is told without spoken dialogue, relying on visual storytelling and sound effects.
  • Seifuku: Japanese school uniform, an iconic part of the characters’ identity and style.
  • Gyaru: Not directly present, but some elements of playful fashion can be seen in how characters personalize their appearances.

Manga: Joshi Kausei is published by Futabasha and, as of June 2019, has 9 collected volumes.

The volumes include occasional bonus comics where characters do speak, adding a hidden layer for fans.

Anime: The TV anime adaptation aired from April to June 2019, produced by Animation Studio Seven.

It features 12 short episodes as part of the Futabanime programming block, broadcast on channels like TOKYO MX, AT-X, and BS Fuji.

Streaming was available on services such as d Anime Store, AbemaTV, and many more.

For the anime, Kenichi Sasaki directed and also handled series composition, sticking closely to the silent manga’s non-dialogue style.

Character designs were adapted by Kyohei Yamamoto.

Production involved a unique focus on expressive sound—breaths, laughter, and reactions—rather than spoken lines.

The anime’s opening theme, "silent days," is performed by Amatsu Uni.

The cheerful, instrumental tone matches the show’s lighthearted, wordless energy.

Critics and readers have praised Joshi Kausei for its innovative silent storytelling.

The manga successfully conveys character relationships and humor without words, making it accessible and endearing.

Reviewers especially highlight how the growing friendship between Momoko, Shibumi, and Mayumi is expressed through visual storytelling rather than dialogue.

Joshi Kausei often features bonus content where the main trio are depicted speaking, offering a fun contrast to the silent main story.

The anime adaptation maintains the series’ unique spirit, wrapping up each episode with a little surprise for keen fans.
