Araiguma Calcal-dan is a Japanese animated mini-series produced by Nippon Animation, premiering in April 2025 as a unique spin-off from the beloved classic “Rascal the Raccoon.” Presented as a comedic, character-driven mini-anime, each episode runs just one and a half minutes including ending credits.

The story centers on five quirky raccoon characters who form a secret society called the “Calcal-dan”—with unpredictable office antics and bold (but always failing) plots for world domination.

Supported by an all-star voice cast, wildly energetic music, and a memorable mix of “chaos and looseness,” it appeals both to fans of the original series and new viewers looking for something refreshingly silly.

Araiguma Calcal-dan is a 50th-anniversary project by Nippon Animation, famed for its World Masterpiece Theater series.

The company announced this official spin-off as a way to celebrate their history and bring a fresh, comedic twist to the classic story of Rascal the Raccoon.

Promotional visuals gained over one million views even before airing, showing the franchise’s enduring popularity and the anticipation for the new series.

The story unfolds in the lush nature of Tama, on the outskirts of Tokyo.

Within this idyllic setting sits the Tama Branch of the mysterious “Secret Society Calcal-dan.”

The group is officially the world’s top-ranked company (at least, that’s what they claim!), staffed entirely by five “elite” raccoons, each with a larger-than-life personality.

Despite their big dreams, their workplace remains firmly stuck in a loop of failed schemes and laughable day-to-day struggles.

Calcal-dan consists of five extraordinary raccoons with just one objective: world conquest!

Each day, they carry out bizarre missions for their enigmatic boss, hoping for promotions that never seem to come.

Rookie member Akacal is relentlessly optimistic, dreaming of luxury living in Tokyo, while Logical—his suspiciously well-spoken manager—spouts motivational platitudes backed by a personal library of self-help books.

Subcal, the trendy co-worker, is already looking for new jobs, while Comical, the muscle-head upperclassman, dotes on the group but can’t handle anyone touching his weak spot: his tail.

Their boss, Middle, is the mysterious and dashing branch chief, rumored to have worked in America and even to have had a “dandy birth cry.”

The cast’s dynamics are full of comedic tension and playful chaos, supported by one-off antagonists like the crafty flock of crows that menace their vegetable garden.

  • Calcal-dan: The whimsical secret society (literally “Calcal Team”), aiming for world domination.
  • Mission: Episode titles are framed as goofy “missions” (e.g., MISSION-1: Activate Calcal-dan!).
  • The Tama Branch: The group’s home base, situated in the Tama area, emphasizing their local misadventures.
  • Raccoons: The main characters, each reinforcing a different stereotype or subculture.

Araiguma Calcal-dan airs weekly on Yomiuri TV and BS Nittere, with episodes also available on major streaming platforms in Japan.

The episodes are short skits, blending absurd comedy with quick-paced animation.

Visuals have ranged from more dramatic, sci-fi-inspired teasers to rough, “unfinished” episode versions aired as a comedic gimmick—drawing excited and confused reactions online.

Key staff include Director Henry Hirakawa and character designer Ayano Yoshioka, with animation produced by Nippon Animation.

Scriptwriting is credited humorously to the “Committee for Seriously Thinking about Calcal-dan.”

The series is notable for its “unfinished” first episode, which aired in storyboard form and featured the voice cast delivering unscripted commentary instead of their usual lines—a bold move that generated buzz on social media and news sites.

The theme song, “Karugaru Every day!!” by HANABIE., mixes energetic rock with playful lyrics, intended to capture the “chaos and looseness” of the series.

The track was announced alongside a new promotional video and has become a highlight of the show, playing during the 30-second end credits.

The show became a social media sensation even before its premiere—its teasers and visuals racking up over a million views.

The first episode’s deliberate “unfinished” broadcast, blending storyboards and cast commentary, led to widespread conversation online, with viewers describing it as both bold and hilarious.

December 12th was officially registered as “Calcal-dan Day” by the Japan Anniversary Association to honor the series’ playful spirit.

Notably, the title must be written as “Araiguma Calcal-dan” with a half-space included—a little quirky touch reflecting the series’ humor.

A cameo by Masako Nozawa, legendary voice of Rascal, connects this spin-off to its distinguished roots and gives long-time fans a playful wink.

The series features regular surprise events and social media campaigns to encourage ongoing fan engagement.

It also showcases a modern take on classic characters and themes, appealing to nostalgic adults and a new, younger audience alike.
